Pear shape successes?

Hello. I am pear shaped and quite bottom heavy with big legs. I'm wondering if anyone with a similar shape has lost weight and managed to improve the legs, thighs and butt. I guess I want to visualise what success looks like. Pics appreciated.

Genetics will predispose where your fat is and where it comes off first - but be patient - it will come off there eventually. I have lost about 3 inches off my butt, but 5 inches off my waist - so it is slower coming off my lower half than my waist, but it is coming off.0

Hmmmm I guess nothing will change unless I get out off bed and move that derrière !0

I'm following this post because I am the same way, almost into regular sizes on top but a far cry away from not being plus size on the bottom.0

It is mostlly fat loss and what you eat that matters. It will come off eventually, you just have to be patient. I carry everything in my butt, hips and thighs .0

Same here! I like my shape but not the extra pounds I am carrying around on it right now.0

I am very much a pear shape and it is the very last place to shrink. I have lost 33 pounds so far and just now is my bottom half finally starting to shrink. I always say that for some reason my butt, hips and thighs refuse to shrink. I have pictures in my profile. I have just a few more pounds to drop to get to my originally goal weight but right now I am more focused on changing my shape a little per say. I mainly lift weight and have for the past 5 months. I do very little cardio simply because I'm not a fan of it.0

Well I don't have pictures of my butt, but I can detail my loss over the past year.
I didn't lose a pant size till I had lost almost 30lbs. It was really discouraging to see the loss in my arms, boobs and face but not my pant size. But meh. I kept at it! Between ~30lbs and ~50lbs loss I dropped pants size fast. I moved down to an 8 from a 12 within those 20lbs. I also started weight lifting.
Running lifted my butt, made it firmer, but weight lifting has really shaped it, and lifted it further. I had no idea butt muscles were so high up!!
While I'm still a big jiggly in my thighs, butt and stomach it's a vast improvement. My stomach is flat most days, my butt is perky and tight, and my thighs have muscle under the jiggly I just have to keep at it to grow more muscle to tighten them all up.
I've dialed down the cardio, cause weight lifting is more fun and doesn't feel like working out. I've been following the Stronglifts 5x5. But I did do the Couch to 5k last Spring and it helped a lot of weight come off.0 -
I have always been bottom-heavy. Even at my thinnest (my arms, chest and waist were skeletal), I has slightly chubby thighs (I was running everyday and doing lots of squats).
I don't find it ugly though.0 -
I am the exact same shape. Several years ago, when I was in really great shape, I could wear a small to medium on the top, and a size 16 on the bottom. However, I was on my way to really reducing the bottom when I started spin class. It about killed me, but all of my friends were telling me how much smaller my legs were becoming! I also did a weightlifting class that shaped my butt. I will be curvy, no matter how small I get, but, when I was fit, I felt like I looked far more feminine than girls without the curves. I embraced my curves, dressed for my curves, and I felt that I looked great. I am working hard to get back to that point. If you have not tried spinning, give it a try for about 3-4 weeks and see if your measurements change....that and weightlifting...makes a big difference!0

I am the same way, but I think we're lucky to have a pear shape! It's healthier than gaining belly weight, and it's more attractive. Guys like it0

Here are some of mine: Not sure if you will see a huge difference. I've gone from a 10/12 ish to a 8/10. I still "believe" I'm a 10, but I betcha I would easily fit some 8's, but this is hard for me to fathom since I can't recall the last time I wore a size 8.
I did not let many pictures be taken of me from the waist down.

I can definitely see a difference between these two!0 -
I hope this thread continues. I am also a pear shape. It would be interesting and helpful to see what works and doesn't work for the PEAR shape. I have heard that spinning is excellent but it will be a while before I can challenge my body that way. I have just started and am looking forward to a healthier version of me. Thank you for sharing! :-)

I have chicken legs, but I definately had a butt transformation. I avoided pics like the plague but I was 150 and got to 120. I have a picture of when I was exercising and was half way to goal compared to 120:

Wow! Fantastic responses and amazing encouraging info! Thank you for posting pictures! I am at least 40 lb heavier than I would like to be so I now have great hopes that I may one day be able to wear shorts or above knee dresses/ skirts with the weight off.
I need a lot of cardio and leg / butt strengthening to start burning the fat that I carry. Pear shape is healthier than apple shape as we get less heart disease and less diabetes but boy do my legs look much bigger! I find it hard to buy boots and wellies.... And generally wear long skirts and trousers,
Great hopes now for change as the weight comes off!0 -
Interesting post! I've lost about 30 of the 70 I'd like to lose. I've always been mostly hips and *kitten* but after my kiddo I started gaining back, arm and face fat. The first 15 pounds I lost came off my face, arms and boobs. I didn't lose a pant size until 20 pounds. At 32 pounds, I've still only lost the one size.
I'm okay with the fact that my thighs will probably always touch and I'll was have a big, high butt. I just want to shrink it all. I'm just happy I've only lost about a 1/2 cup size in the boob department.0 -

I always loose from the top before the bottom, in my pictures you can see my progress so far. I have noticed that the stationary bike has really helped in starting to tone my legs & behind, so that is nice. Maybe by summer I will like how I look in a pair of shorts!0

I'm also a pear shape--definitely following this post as well. I will say this though, since I've dropped 50lbs, I can see where my bottom is maybe a lil smaller...I've never had probl seeing weight loss in my upper body and waiste. I'm just waiting on the "bottom half" to catch up but considering I am going down in size, obviously something is decreasing down there LOL
I've always worn 18/20 in the top but 24 in the bottom ...TODAY I am 20 in the bottom; that's after 50lb loss. We shall see what the coming mos bring as I'm going for losing the next 50. Good luck!0 -
Me! I have before/afters in my profile if you want to take a look. I'm 5'2 and I started off as a 14/16 and XL top, and am now a 6, although I was trying on some things yesterday that were 4's and I wear a Small or XS shirt, depending. Yes, I am still "pear shaped", my butt/hips/thighs were the last to drop weight. I walk a lot, do pilates, lift weights. Pilates has made a huuuuge difference in my thighs/butt.0

I'm definitely a pear shape. And although I'm currently definitely in the "before" mode rather than "after", I can share my previous experience and give you some insight.
I'm 5'11" and currently am hovering around 200 pounds. Even at 160 pounds, I still wore a size L shirt, as I do now. I currently wear a size 14 pants and am almost bursting out of them. At 160, I wear a size 12.
Where I really noticed my legs looking slim was when I finally weighed 150 and was training for triathlons. 150 is below the middle of the weight range recommended for my height, and is a BMI of 21. I STILL usually wore a size 12 pants, sometimes a 10, but sometimes wore a M shirt.
In high school, I was very VERY skinny, and although I had wide-ish hips (can't change the size and shape of your pelvic bone!), my legs were very slim.
So really, it wasn't until I was on the lower end of the weight range for my height and exercising a lot that I lost some of that "thick thigh" situation. That being said, even higher up in the weight range, if you're weight training and building lean body mass, your thighs might not be skinny, but they'll be firm, powerful, and sexy!0 -
Great thread. I'm a junk in the trunk kinda girl too. In fact, I have on a size 14 pants today but if I didn't have the butt and high thighs I have, I'm sure I could wear a 12, because there is a nice chunk of baginess in my waist. I'll admit it gets to me sometimes that I have lost all this weight but my legs still look pretty yucky. I really want to be able to wear some cute summer things this year. I haven't worn shorts outside for YEARS...no kidding. I know summer is a long time from now and I WILL get there but being pear shaped has been a focus of my frustration through this whole thing.0
