How in the world do you know when yogurt goes bad? We had a single serve Nostimo in the fridge and the date said Dec. 22. My wife wouldn't touch it. I ate it. It was fine. Yogurt is weird.

i just taste it. thats normally how i operate. unless its for my kdis then i pretty much stick to the exp date. few years ago, shortly after i was married i cooked some ground beef that smelled "funky" to my not yet developed cooking skills, and we ate it anyway. we had the WORST stomach cramps, diarrea, and throw up for like a week! my husband had ate more than me, so he was worst off. luckily, my 1yr old at that time didnt have any. SIGH! so thats why im extra cautious with them. ive eaten past the date yogurt and it was fine0

The same issue comes up in our household. My wife will toss something that is a day past the package date. I have eaten yogurt up to two weeks past the "recommended date".0
-
The date's just a sell by date. I've eaten yogurt 2-3 weeks past the date and it's still fine. I mean .. It's already gone bad, right?0
-
I go by smell with everything.0
-
Give it 2-5 hours and you will be crapping up a storm ha0
-
I ate one over the weekend from 11/12/....still alive...so I ate the other from 12/12...Guess they don't go bad for quite some time.0

Is Yogurt Still Safe After the Sell-By Date?
Question: I’ve got some yogurt in the fridge and I just discovered that the sell-by date was a week ago. Is it still safe to eat?
Answer: Most likely it is. Yogurt that has been properly stored will generally remain safe for at least 7 to 10 days after the "sell-by" date on the package.
As the food safety specialists at Clemson University’s Cooperative Extension point out, this assumes that the temperature of your refrigerator remains at or below 40° Fahrenheit at all times. Bear in mind, too, that the longer you keep yogurt, the stronger its taste will become.
If mold appears on yogurt, or if it develops an off odor, flavor or appearance, you should always discard it immediately.
(Note: This refers to “sell-by” terminology used in the United States; practices in other countries may differ.)

Just a note: I like yogurt better when it starts to taste a little bit like cheese.0 -
for me its when i open it, if theres any color or greater consitincey changes like its somehow seperating from stuff in it i toss it. i find having my fridge temp set colder than usual makes things keep for longer0

I just ate 2 tubs of Greek yogurt that were 2 months past their expiration date. They were fine and I am fine. Expiration dates for certain food items are a load of poppy ****. You just have to use common sense. However, if you aren't sure, it is better to throw it out.
I never just throw out yogurt/greek yogurt based on the date. I manually check it for signs that it is going bad. Note: Getting a bit separated is not going bad, it just needs to be mixed. I also regularly consume milk past the expiration date. It would be a waste to get rid of it when it is perfectly good. Just pour a little into a cup and smell/taste (don't smell it in the carton because it might smell off when it is really fine due to dried bits around the top).
However, for things like meat... I pretty much go by the expiration date unless I freeze it.0 -
I ate some cottage cheese that was 11 days expired. I was like...it's cottage cheese, how bad can it get?
I pay little attention to best before dates, maybe it will catch up with me one day, haha.0 -
If it starts smelling like something that's not yogurt, or looking like something that you'd find under your fridge then it may have gone bad.
But the date is more or less the date that it has to be pulled from the shelf in the store. I'd say a couple days after won't hurt.0 -
If it looks like yogurt and it tastes like yogurt, it's fine. My yogurt from october is still good. The enzimes in yogurt easily kill off most things that would turn other foods. The thing you have to look out for is the yogurt with fruit because the fruit will go bad and turn the whole batch.
Edit: Random note on yogurt: It's one of the few foods that is safe to eat worldwide by people whose immune systems are not acclimated to the region. While bacteria infects water and most food in some regions of the world making them unsafe to people less often exposed to those types and amounts of germs, yogurt kills off even the tough bacteria such as E. Coli.0 -
Most things I will eat past the date. Meats and dairy are not one of them.0

I don't know if I'd chance yogurt from October, but yeah considering what it is it seems like it would be safe well past the date.0 -
If the yogurt is pulled away from the edges and it's watery, it's more then likely ready to toss, especially if it's expired.0

Kinda makes you wonder how much perfectly good yogurt is thrown away at the stores every day.0 -

I always err on the side of caution. Both me and hubby have had too many bad experiences with food poisoning to warrant risking anything.0

I actually just ate some plain fat free greek yogurt this morning and didnt notice it expired 4 days ago until I was throwing the empty container away! Greek yogurt already has a sour cream taste so I thought it was fine Lol Little did I know!0
-
A major reason to eat yogurt is for the digestive benefits of the active bacteria in it. The older the yogurt, the less active the bacteria are. So even if a yogurt is still edible for perhaps weeks after the sell by date, it is better to eat it while it is fresh.0

No, No. You thought right. It was fine.0 -
HOCKEY SOCK! Hahaha Love it!0

Most things dont matter, what you have to be careful with is meat. If there's even a chance that it's bad - throw it away.0
-
Yeah I take no chances with meat. We had bought some ground veal a while back that was marked down at the store, and had frozen it for a couple of days. After it was thawed and opened, it looked pink and fresh, but smelled rancid. I had never seen meat that looked good, but smelled so badly. I don't know if it was bad or if that is what veal smells like, but I chucked it.0
