How much protein did I waste?

More importantly...... WHAT did you eat that had 160g of protein? I need to know for MY lunch.
27oz of grilled chicken breast.
That's a lot of breast. How'd you handle all that?
*giggle* I see what you did there :P
But seriously, wow...that is a lot...hahaha0 -

research isn't hard and fast but it looks like you can absorb and average of about 30 grams per sitting the rest just passes without adding much to your nutrition totals except calories.0

None.
It all gets absorbed.0 -

But, how does the breast that he ate know if he's sitting or standing when he ate it?0 -

Well sure, I suppose bigger hands help...but I'd think you'd just get exhausted after a while. I really think it is just too much breast for any one man at one time.0 -

There is no such thing as too much breast...
Unless you're over your calories for the day (had to add, so I don't get a strike )0 -

ETA - he is good at it too.0 -
If you've consumed that many grams, your body will take a while to break that down to be absorbed.. therefore absorbing it slowly over the hours it's digesting. People are saying you pee it out as if all that meat will be digested in a couple hours.. it won't be. You don't just 'pee out' the protein while there's 27 oz of chicken breast sitting in your stomach all day. I don't really think you've wasted it.. I just think it's unnecessary to consume that much in protein in one meal.. unless you're just living off of meat and barely any carbohydrates? (which I'll save my opinion on). For most people, that is two days worth of protein. It is also significantly more than double the RDA for an average person (which also has a large safety margin). Athletes are obviously different, but still don't require as much as someone who is into, say, bodybuilding?
Rather than worrying about wasting it, I'd be more concerned with not habitually consuming excess protein above what you need because it's really hard on the kidneys and liver. With the standard american diet, we tend to get much more protein than our bodies need.. and not necessarily from the best sources.
Quality of protein over quantity for sure!
How do I know how much I need. I have heard I need 1.5-2g / lb . That would mean up to 460g/day. If I break that up over 3 meals thats about 155/meal. Does that seem right? If I am only eating two meals that would be 230 each....I dont know how I will be able to do it.0 -

Colonics seem to be popular right now. Possibly a protein one will help you get the numbers you need.0 -
Give the extra protein to your wife.

Never seen any expert suggesting you eat that much protein over two or three meals a day. Your body cannot store the spare amino acids for later like it can fat or carbs, with huge portions you are just consuming very expensive sugar. Athletes divide up their intake, serious bodybuilders may even wake up in the night to trough a protein shake.0 -
So you're saying I should eat more smaller protein meals? Like 10 meals of 46g each?0

Jac!!!
You're only supposed to eat so much protein every four hours...otherwise it's ALL wasted...
at least that's what my last boyfriend told me...
every four hours...on the hour....more protein!
I see what you did there, nice0 -

Did I really just read this or are my cold meds playing with my eyes??
And which parts of what I wrote do you disagree with? You can disagree without being rude you know.0 -
OP- It's in bodybuilding where you hear you need 1.5-2.0 g/ lb.. and that's per pound of LEAN muscle mass. So, unless you have 230 lbs of lean mass, you don't need 460g per day. If you do have that much lean mass, then you don't need our help here. I did not know this was your goal. That is why I mentioned the RDA for average people, and stated that athletic people need more, and that bodybuilders need the most.
Regardless of goal though, it's true that we don't need that much protein and it's taxing on the kidneys.0 -

some people around here are just so rude or try to turn everything into something sexual.... thank you for trying to really help. so if my lean mass is 180, I should eat 36 grams of protein each meal over 10 small meals right?0 -
Your body only absorbs about 25g of protein in a single meal. so you'll just flush out the excess. Try and space your protein throughout the day.0
-
If your aim is legit bodybuilding, then yes, you'd eat your lean mass x 1.5 or 2.0. 10 meals might be really difficult though.. so you could always have like 6 meals, then protein shakes in between if you needed to.
If you're just trying to gain more muscular physique but aren't big into bodybuilding, then even 1g per lb would be plenty. My husband got some really nice gains from only 0.8-1.0 per pound of his lean mass. It would cost a lot less also..haha. His protein sources at that time were mainly just eggs, egg whites, whey protein shakes, and fish also. Different things work for different people, so dont stress if you dont get 270-360g in each day unless you have time, money, and appetite enough to eat every hour or hour and a half.
And youre right.. I only started using the forums this week and noticed that no matter what people say (even with the purest intentions) there are people who have the objective of starting drama and being rude to people they dont even know. Ive seen one or two of these people on almost every thread so far. Its okay for people to have different opinions, and for people to be wrong. I just dont understand people's need to be immature and disrespectful about it. Most of these people are older than me too.0
