And so what's the recourse on frivilous reporting? You report someone for something that in general is not offensive but someone has decided that by their subjective opinion they are offended and report. The mods then seem so concerned that they give the person a warning even when they have stayed on topic or didn't actually discuss anything that is in actuality offensive to a different population. The word snatch comes to mind. When I talk about it on the forums I'm talking about an Olympic lifting move, but there are plenty of people that get all report happy when it comes up in discussion not because I have my head in the wrong place but because they do. While they're busy thinking about my vagina I'm thinking about the weight I'm trying to heft over my head in a safe way yet I get in trouble because they can't be bothered to keep their mind out of the gutter.0 -

Just to be clear. I have no problems with the moderators... well I have a problem with them just clicking and deleting and stuff... I have more of a problem with report happy people... those people make me angry.0 -
When did this site turn into a concentration camp?
I have been a member on the site for roughly 2 years (different user names/profiles), in that 2 years the forums have went from a place of fun - especially the chit chat forum to a place where if you tell someone the truth you are facing a warning, a strike or better yet a forum ban.
I am a member of MULTIPLE online forums and have been since I was 15; I am 30 now so you do the math. This site is so overly moderated its ridiculous. There are times where yes moderation is required but every single one of the warnings I have ever received has been because I told someone to just do it and suck it the fruck up! I tell my co-workers the same thing on a daily basis... hell I tell my 8 year old niece to suck it the fruck up if she is whining over something stupid.
NOT everyone on this site is mean, some of us are actually pretty nice people that do try to help but when we are met with "Stop being mean" comments we just turn into sarcasm machines... its not bullying if you don't like what you hear. Be an adult pull up your big girl/boy panties and move the hell on. Not everyone is going to hold your hand, not everyone is going to like what your doing and we will tell you. We are adults right? I think there is a rule you have to be 18 to use the site... so be an adult, if someone hurts your feelings on the internet turn the computer off and walk away. Pretty simple.
Also stop reporting things unless its necessary... if you are an avid "OH I DON"T LIKE THIS REPORT" person go away. It is not your JOB to remove those you do not like, use the ignore feature and those you don't like won't show up on the forums. Seriously... you know who you are.
Can we please be more like an internet forum and less like a concentration camp. I come to the site for the tools, and the socialization factor - its fun... well it used to be fun. I want fun back.

The mods are the ones that turn the reports into warnings, strikes and bans, though. Their criteria as to how they respond to the report happy people's reports has a lot to do with the current climate of the forums.

Not sure about warnings, but you can appeal strikes from what I know. Maybe just state your case. Maybe they have a way of making notes in their part of things to try to see a "history" of who is frivolously reporting or not.0 -

The mods aren't the real problem. It's people who are convinced that it is their god given right to police the internet and report every single thing that doesn't fit in with their ideas.So what. Well, obviously I don't watch everything the mods do, but in general the threads I've seen get locked I completely agree with the mods decision. Honest to goodness--not sucking up here.
I think you insult the Mods intelligence by assuming they aren't good at their jobs just because you or your friends have been warned. The mods probably wait to get multiple reports, then visit the thread, make a decision for themselves like any adult would do and then carry out that decision. I'm fine with it. I don't report a lot, but the things I have reported I was grateful were reviewed. I don't like forums that get all "wild west" for no good reason. Sarcasm is fine on some other sites like 4chan or fark or whatever, but it's not always appropriate on all forums. Audience matters.0 -

I completely agree...except for this part. This will not fix the problem at all...because there will always be a new wave of new users with the potential to start reporting everything. You can't stop that.
But the good news is, that isn't where the system is broken. It's broken at the other end of the report. I, too, have been involved in online message boards for a very long time (even back to the dial-up modem BBS days), and this is the first forum I have encountered that puts such weight into the sole fact that a post was reported. Coupled with a very broad ToS, it is a horrible combination. It puts the power into the hands of the (often new) user when this power should stay with a reasonable mod decision. Yes, I know, making these mod calls is difficult...(I've been there)...people will not always be happy...but to err so far to the side of the report itself is absolutely ludicrous.0 -
