I wonder how to count the calories spent when crocheting. Anyone have any ideas?

I have been crocheting for over 40 years and, TBH, it never helped me lose weight. For me, its part of everyday movement.

I wouldn't be worried about the calories burned. For me though, it keeps my hands busy. When I'm idle I tend to gravitate towards the kitchen.

Figure out your BMR. Divide it by 24 hours. That's how many calories you burn an hour.

    There you go.

Not enough to "count". I think that would be over stretching what you need to record.

Is it synchronized water crocheting? If not, it doesn't count as exercise.

unless you are walking around the block or the treadmill while you are crocheting I would say to few to count. It does keep your hands and mind occupied so I'm not snacking.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I had no idea so many here actually crocheted. I do appreciate the helpful suggestions because I do crochet a lot and to be honest it is a lot of repetitive motion and if crocheting large items or with heavy material it can be considered some type of excersise. I apologize to the ones that thought I was crazy for asking the question :)

I don't crochet, but I do knit, and although I would like to consider the hand cramps after an hour or so, equivalent to workout cramps, it does not count. lol

Unfortunately, repetitive motion at even that sort of weight isn't burning many calories. You are likely strengthening your fingers, hands, wrists, and even forearms, which is great, because if you ever decided to pick up weights, you've got some potentially stronger stabilizers in your arms. But even weight training is less about calorie burn then it is about building muscle which in turn burns calories... which isn't happening with crocheting.

Otherwise, you need to get your heart rate to actually consider something a cardio exercise. Unless you're huffing and puffing from crocheting, it is probably <5 calories an hour on top of your BMR.

I crochet quite a bit and I get what you mean, but since you are sitting while doing it, and the repetitive motion is minimal (not like jumping jacks or anything) I wouldn't count it as calories burnt.

I crochet a lot and don't consider it a calorie burning activity at ALL. in fact, I feel guilty for the lack of movement.

Does sitting watching TV count? No. Does holding a thread in your hand with a stick count? No. Exercise is something that significantly raises your heart rate over a prolonged period of time. The only time that may happen when I crochet or knit is if I've made a huge mistake!

Your daily budget takes into account that you do make some minor movements during the day beyond being comatose.

I look at it more as meditation than exercise. While I am crocheting, my mind is relaxed. I feel that it helps keep my blood pressure down and it keeps me from eating up the whole can of peanuts that sits on our coffee table for our bird to eat. (he is a Parakeet, so you can gues who really eats most of the peanuts!) It is NEAT (non-exercise associated thermogenesis).

Agreed - I knit, but don't count it as exercise. But, like others have said, it's relaxing and it definitely helps keep me from snacking while I watch tv.

If you really want to know how many calories you are burning crocheting, pull it down from the exercise menu / cardio / kniting & crocheting. You burn around 29 calories per hour which is probably only a few more calories you are burning than just sitting and doing nothing.

I'd seriously NOT count crocheting as "exercise". It isn't .. Really. It's part of your NEAT. Non-exercise Activity thermogenesis.

Unless of course, your crocheting is much more strenuous than mine .... ; )

I crochet, too. But I don't count it. But like others have said, it keeps me from wondering into the kitchen for a snack. Last night, I was crocheting next to my hubby on the couch. He got up and made some popcorn, came back and started munching, offering me some. I declined because my hands were busy. So, to me, THAT's the real value of crocheting/knitting/beading!

it just keeps me from snacking, so its not about burning calories as much as it is calorie intake prevention
  • I wouldnt count it as calorie burn, I just do it to keep my hands busy while I'm watching tv so my hands dont wander to an open bag of chips.
  • I'm so glad to read that other people use crocheting as a way to keep your hands busy, i.e. out of the snack bin, while watching TV. :)

If only it WAS excercise! I'd be a size 6! ;)

Same here for me with knitting! It sounds crazy to some people I've told, but it's helped me tremendously with snacking in front of the tv.

Personally I do not count it. But what I used to do was crochet while wall sitting.

No calorie burn, but keeps me out of the fridge. I cannot eat and crochet or knit at the same time.

Crocheting would be "sedentary." No calorie burning going on there.
  • I think some of you are all looking at this wrong. You don't need to huff and puff to get your heart rate up and going to lose some major calories. If you think sitting and doing nothing won"t get you no where in burning off calories then think again cuz your BMR is all about that lol. BMR refers to the number of calories your body needs to perform very basic functions while at rest. which include cell repair, body growth, blood circulation and breathing. So yes any lil thing you do counts.Like crazy ppl that move back and forth on their chair are burning calories. Nervous leg shaking before an interview are burning calories. So why not crocheting. Tho huffing and puffing to get your heart rate going in hardcore aerobics is the BEST and FASTEST way to go, but its not the only option. Also what helps make them effortless but very much countable activities useful is not over doing your calorie intake or whats the point in any lil thing you do LOL.

I can't believe so many people have responded negatively towards this question - I crochet quite a bit, and quickly, and do "feel the burn" in my arms from time to time. That being said, I thought this was a website where we were meant to support each other, not cut each other down - granted, it is not likely crocheting burns any recordable calories. But come on, people. Don't be jerks.
