Should I eat breakfast before a workout or just a snack?

I have been working out in the mornings, I am not sure if I should eat breakfast an hour or so before working out or should I just eat a small snack such as fruit and then eat lunch a while after working out? Sorry if its dumb, I'm just getting started on all this and I have no idea what I should be doing! haha thanks in advance!

  • A small snack would be better than a breakfast, and no way is that dumb, I would of probably asked that question in the future also!

If you feel yourself burning out, eat more before you exercise, but be sure to wait a bit before doing anything high-impact that could upset your stomach. If you're good, you're good.

I was just wondering this myself. I read that a study finds working out before any food at all is the best for weight loss. but its best to get a workout in at all. www.mensfitness.com/nutrition/what-to-eat/breakfast-before-or-after-a-workout
  • Everyones different. Test it out. Eat just eggs one morning, then eggs toast, one day nothing, one day oatmeal.

It all depends on you. I don't eat before I lift, I don't eat before I run. If I do, it makes me feel kinda queasy. Try eating something then go work out, if you don't feel queasy, you have your answer.
  • If you feel like you need food, have it. It's not critical.

I do one or the other depending on time. If I have the time for breakfast, I'll eat breakfast first, if not, I'll do a snack. I don't think it really matters, I sure don't notice anything different. :)
  • Thank you everyone! I think I'm over thinking everything! lol

As long as you are eating at a calorie deficit, consistently, logging your food accurately (weigh/measure), you'll lose weight.

I find if I don't eat something I end up super hungry in the middle of working out. But...I don't eat a huge breakfast...usually a luna bar and a banana. Sometimes a banana and greek yogurt. I have found that there are certain foods I can't eat before working out. For example, no OJ before running...gives me heart burn.
