Ok so I am craving a new look to go with my weight loss and cant really buy lots of new clothes. I am 21 abd have never ever dyed my hair. I am scared I will get stuck dying it forever, my natural hair color is nice I am just tired with it. Should I get a cut instead? Really I am wondering if people who dye their hair wish they had never started? Or love the variety? Does your hair get dry?

you have nice hair i think you should cut it as i colored my hair once i kept doing it and now my hair is dry as hell and to be honest it kills it i use have long hair but i kept drying my hair is slow at growing if you lask me then i would say no0

Dyeing your hair will add shine and body. It's completely reversible if you hate it and want to go back (if you get a colourist to undo it)
So great results for a small investment.
It's not permanent like cutting is.
I should mention I dye my butt length hair black and have done for years now, it was originally light brown.
My hair is course and dry - but it was before I ever dyed it. I notice positive changes right after a colour which slowly reduce between colours.0 -
Dyeing my hair...? Hmmm... Never considered it. Think I could pull it off?0
-
Try a temporary dye that doesn't have ammonia or peroxide in it, it may only last a few washes but if you don't like it, you're not stuck with it0

Yes, baldzach! I think you should dye it!
I dye my hair! But it is because I'm old and if I didn't, I'd be grey. And I'm just not ready for that yet!!0 -

Don't color your hair....Men always look nice with grey hair...It's us women that don't.....it's not fair!!0 -
I am 20, just dyed my hair red for the first time recently, most of it washed out already ahaha.
I'm gonna let it grow out.
If you decide to dye your hair, just remember a shade close to your natural one in case you want to go back.0 -

If you aren't ready to commit, buy a hair color you can apply yourself. You can get some that last for a week or just a few washes.
If you decide you like it, go to a salon rather than buying the "permanent" color at the store. The professional dye looks so much better, and your hair will have natural color and shine to it.
If you don't want to keep doing the roots over and over, choose something that's close to your natural color. You can also do highlights or low-lights. My hair is dark brown, so I dye it black. You can't tell when my roots come in because my natural color is already very dark. My hair always gets lighter toward the ends, so it already looks black on top. I dye it to even out the color along the entire length of the strand (and now I dye it to cover up the grey... blargh).
The cool thing about being blonde is that you can get away with lots of different shades of blonde and red, and highlights look really good in blonde hair.0 -
Do a semi perminant dye0

Temporary hair color is a great idea if you're not sure what you want. Or use an online photo editor and change the color of your hair by using the paintbrush tool and lowering the opacity (or put your face on someone else's with a hair style you like). That's how I decided to chop all my hair off and was so glad I did! And if you take care or your hair, it will not dry it out. I've been dying my hair for around 10 years and, except for my first bleach attempt, I have not had a problem with hair drying out. Just watch heat with hairdryers and flat irons, and you can use sulfate free shampoo to prolong the color.
edit: also worth mentioning that even though temporary color fades, it does not completely wash out, especially if you have lighter hair naturally. What you can do is get Vitamin C powder and mix it with some shampoo, and that really helps extract the color (at least it works on funny hair colors like blue and pink). It will leave your hair feeling a bit dry, but doing an oil treatment will restore it. I don't have the exact instructions, so take to google if this interests you.0 -
When there is dye, the chances of damage is way higher. Ive been dying my hair since I was in the sixth grade. I did the mistake of cutting my hair and im not even kidding, ive had the same hair length for over 8 years. Ive been trying to make it healthier by not straightening it anymore, putting Moroccan oils, coconut oils, keratine sprays etc in my hair. Ive been doing this for already a year and there is barely any change. Everyone else is saying if you don't like it you can just change it. In a way, that is true, but you will also need to wait a minimum of 2 weeks to prevent damage, and even after that, it will still be damaging. Go see a good hair dresser, and tell him or her that you want to do something new. Together you might be able to come up with something awesome.
By the way, at home dyes are much more harsh on your hair, so always get it done professionally.0 -
I was a lot like you when I was first considering coloring. The permanence scared me. But I started going gray at 19 (not even kidding, runs in the family) so I am thankful for hair dye! I also get SO many compliments on my particular color (reddish/auburn.) It's a great ego boost from a measly $3 box of Revlon color!
I have also found another color in the same line that is almost an exact match for my natural hair so that I can just dye and grow out if I ever choose to. I started with that when I was just looking to cover grays and then gradually branched out to more daring colors. A good salon colorist would also be able to help you blend or match colors if you needed to, I would think.
But as for me, I like coloring my hair and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. :happy:0 -
If you're afraid of permenantly losing your natural colour you shouldn't be. c: It'll come back, given enough time.
However, I would reccomend starting with a non-permenant dye and working your way up from there if you really are worried about it. Likewise, keep close to your natural colour initially. The darker you get, the harder it is to go back and the lighter you go, the more you can damage your hair with bleach. Also, don't be afraid of conditioner!
I've dyed my hair purple, red, a few different shades of brown and black, as well as streaking it orange. I wouldn't say that it's visibly damaged my hair in the least.
Matter of fact, the only thing that's pooched it thus far has been stress, and possibly a small nutrient deficiency.0 -

I'm a natural redhead but I henna to add strength. I'm getting sick of it but I can't stop because my new growth looks nearly blonde in comparison.
I'm working on a solution.
If you want a change but don't want it to be high maintenance, use a non permanent dye or go slightly lighter. When it grows out it will look okay in most cases.
Keep in mind any non-vegetable dye will damage your hair.0 -

I love this colour!! If I wasn't so dark i'd love this0 -
You should dye it if you want. I don't dye mine, I bleach it from black to white, it's a long, dangerous process lol but I like it . My hair does get dry but I use argan oil each day and I only wash my hair once a week, completely fine0
-
Do you want to go lighter or darker? Maybe you could experiment with some highlights or lowlights which will make your hair look darker/lighter without going the whole way. Dying it once shouldn't do too much damage (especially if you go to a hair dresser) but the problem is that once you start you either have to keep going or let it grow out. I wouldn't reccomend doing anything too dramatic. Your hair is a beautiful colour and most people look best with a shade that is close to their natrual colour.0

Your hair is quite thin so as an alternative I think you'd look great with some layers and bangs cut in. Bangs are a great way to mix up your look0

I have been coloring my hair since I was 13... I HATE my natural color... Its this awful gray/brown/greeny color...Its just bad...
Anyways... No I have never regretted coloring it...well the idea of coloring it... I have regretted going a certain color or leaving it on to long or things like that lol...
I am normally dark headed but sometimes I do go blonde... I tend to do everything myself and bleaching damages your hair as it is so bleaching your whole head when it all processes at different rates can be ubber damaging....That I have regretted, but loved the color!
I think you would do great with layers and a cut... Try temp color that washes out at first...You may decide you hate it, especialy with how light your hair is now. Allot of blondes regret coloring their hair....
If you do color it and hate it, the color can always be pulled to match or at least resemble your natural color while it grows out....0 -
Whatever you do....DON'T use box dye or do it yourself. That is the biggest mistake. Box dye is crap and can easily ruin hair. The products at salons are much more gentle on the hair and if you are worried about it being dry they also have conditioning treatments as well.
I'm having my hair bleached and colored pink/purple next month and I'll be having it done at a salon. Once I stopped using box dye I stopped destroying my hair.0 -

I'm going to disagree because I know a million people who work at Hot Topic and regularly dye their hair themselves. Like every couple weeks.
Bleaching is insanely damaging. If you are going to bleach, you probably should not have hair longer than shoulder length. After bleaching, always use a protein treatment and regularly deep condition your hair. You may want to switch to a sulfate free shampoo or at least one for color treated hair.
Manic Panic and a lot of other "crazy" hair colors are made from vegetables and are not particularly damaging. OP appears to be already blonde, so this might be a good starter option. You can mix dyes if you are careful and use them from the same brand. Some people become good enough at this or use low doses over brown shades and can manage to get natural looking colors.
Chemical box dyes are damaging and so are the salon versions. If you dye your hair, you need to start using color treated hair products. Again, deep conditioning or protein treatments can be helpful here. The longer you leave in a color and the bigger variation there is from your natural color, generally the more damaging it will be.
The main differences in salon dyes is not the formulation so much as that an expert will be more likely to not overestimate leave in time or the strength of dye needed, so that you will get less damage. There's also the fact that in a salon, if a stylist is going to do something that will strongly damage your hair, they will often include a treatment to help keep the hair nice with the purchase.0 -
Meh, I'm a natural blonde (and a fairly light blonde!) and dye my hair to 'darkest brown'. Everyone says how much it suits me, and that they now can't imagine me with blonde hair.
I think it's a good way to give yourself a new look, and a bit more self confidence.0 -
Whee, I get to tell my hair horror story! Haha.
I'm naturally a light redhead. It's lovely, honestly, but I was 25 and wishing to wear bright, happy colors that always washed out my color. So I decided it was time for a change and dyed it brown. A light brown at first, because I am PALE, and I kept it that way for a couple of months. I was pretty happy - I could wear bright pinks and oranges and reds, but the shade of my hair bugged me a little. I decided I wanted a richer color.
Not wanting to pay the $80 I had at a salon the first time, I got a box dye. The darker the color, the less damage tp your hair, and my sister had been doing her own for years with barely any damage, so I figured why not? I picked a shade I liked - a nice brown with red tints, and slathered it on. Let me tell you - it was *beautiful*. I adored the shade. I kept it up for four or five months, dying once a month or so, since my roots were VERY visible, being so much lighter.
Finally I had to admit the shade was simply too dark for my coloring. I didn't even want to think about it, because I loved the color, but it just didn't suit me. So what to do now? How do I revert to my natural shade? I did all sorts of reading online. Color stripping could damage your hair. Bleach could damage your hair. A lot of salons won't even agree to bleach hair because of how badly it can damage. I wound up deciding to risk doing it myself. I read a million reviews online and picked an easy bleach that was reported to not be too harsh.
The end result? I melted my hair. Yes, that's right, MELTED. It was my own dang fault. My hair is very fine, and I wasn't careful, and doing it myself was a bad idea. But for girls like us, I think you should know that this is a big possibility - melting your hair.
I kept it, melted and all, refusing to cut it off. It's been a few months and it's slowly growing back out after waiting a few extra weeks and dying it close to my natural shade. It's extremely damaged, and I can't wait until my natural hair grows in, but I'll sum this up by telling you what I learned from all of this:
1) If you dye your hair, get one that washes out. You may have to do it once every three weeks, but you'd do that with regular dye anyway, most likely.
2) If you have fine hair, for goodness' sake, don't bleach it. Or if you do, don't do it yourself. Haha.
3) If you don't need to dye your hair, I suggest not doing it. It is a HUGE pain to maintain.0
