Exactly what is MFP good for??

MFP is good for wasting a lot of time when you should be working...
But it's also for counting calories and tracking exercises. Which is the best use.

trying to motivate and educate other people motivates me and puts me under pressure to stay educated myself. 3/4 times I come here to feel better by cheering up other people and trying to dispense hope. On the 4th day, the bastids get to me and I end up losing hope and motivation.
but the rest of the story is this... im starving for fitness friends in real life, i only have 2 and one is brand new and I cant like... scare her away right away.... so I make friends here with the only people that I know that really get it.
I mean REALLY GET IT.
I mean - get it to the point where you can joke about it without filters.
and in between jokes, sometimes I see them helping other people, and it feels like the last scene in the Grinch, when his heart grows a few sizes.0 -

Yup. My "real life" friends just don't get it the way all of you do. I, too, am starving for fitness friends. So far I've only found 1 in "real life".0 -
If you are not using it to track your calories? Exercise or food, whatever. In an earlier post, several posters tried to say you don't need to track your calories, this that or the other to lose weight. Just exercise and eat better and you will lose.
But what good is MFP to you if you are not tracking calories, etc...?
Trollin like a boss! What?!!?0 -

^^^^^This right here. I don't have a group of friends that work out, or not that work out at the same gym. It is hard for me to make new friends due to me having kids which are in multiple activities, add to that me wanting to take care of myself and the homework the kids bring home. I have basically ZERO extra time to just go around and hang out. Here I can chat with people with the same interests and goals. These people keep me on track without even having to do anything. They are just here. I know if I am having a bad day, I voice it, they crack me up and then I can move on from whatever was soooo horrible.0 -

I suppose support could be a reason but not taking advantage of their nutrition and exercise trackers is a shame.0

I think a lot of people enjoy the community here. There aren't a lot of places where you can freely talk about weight loss and body image without being exposed to a greater deal of ignorance then is sometimes seen here.0

Indeed. Not to mention that many people think you're obsessed if you lift weights or want to run more than a mile, etc.0 -

For hot girls who look incredible (and know it) to post nearly nude photos of themselves and express how "gross" they are, while waiting for guys to come in and tell them they look hot.
I'm guessing this is SARCASM. I will admit I have been guilty of this.
Carry on.
No, seriously. Do some more and let me know which threads they are :bigsmile:0 -
What I use MFP for:
I track my food because I need to leash my appetite. If I did not know how many calories I was eating, I would surely stuff my face until the food was gone. Overeating is a weakness for me and tracking helps with that.
I track my exercise calories because it lets me eat more treats… big motivator for me.
Tracking exercise to beat my personal best records
I've exchanged recipes with others to learn new yummy foods that are good for you and low-cal.
Tried new exercises that others have told me about or set up challenges for.
Made a lot of friends that will encourage, cheer, and support me… not to mention bust my *kitten* when I need it.
Gave me an outlet to share my love of belly dance.0 -

Boobie Friday

I joined over 2 years ago and was logging for 2 years straight (with days off)
These 2 years of logging have been awesome for me because I have learned SOOOO much about food.
I am continuing to learn about food and the numbers and how it all stacks up. But I started to obsess over the numbers and the percentages, to a point where I would plan every single second of exercise and gram of food a week in advance. It was all based on the NUMBERS. It wasn't actually based on how my body felt. Was I even hungry? Half the time, no. I just ate it because it was planned and it fit into my macros. I was so meticulous that I would blow out quite a lot. Really, really good for 5 days, blow out for 2. Then the cycle would repeat.
I have recently stopped logging (mid December). And since I have stopped logging I am eating so much better! And I'm seeing results for the first time in about 12 months. And I haven't binged ONCE!
Why am I still on MFP? I love the community, I have made friends on here, I can still stay accountable by telling everyone what I ate at the end of each day, I participate in challenges (currently running one myself), I log and keep track of my workouts, I support others. I continue to learn what works for me and what doesn't by being here.
