I am not fat, on the skinny side, don't starve, eat what I want, within reason of course, and happier than I have ever been.....just saying.0

indulging at birthdays, xmas etc won't leave you 10lbs over your ideal weight unless you are one heck of a social butterfly!0

That's not even a question. After being 130lbs overweight, I can handle being only 10 pounds over but being happy.0

Just because you are skinny does not mean you are starving. Quite the contrary, most of the time those that are fit have figured out how to enjoy food without having to go overboard and eat everything. And I do things that I like for exercise, hiking, sports, skiing. I don't do them just because I need to burn a few calories.0

wow, am I the only one who would choose skinny and starving? I have been fat, and that never made me happy. I can deal with hunger, I won't deal with being overweight again.0

I want to say I get what you're trying to say...but actually I'm not sure I do. I think perhaps it's because you are subscribing to the mindset that the only way to reach and maintain your goal is to be uber strict 100% of the time. If there is one important thing I have learned from my friends on MFP is that it IS possible to lose weight/build muscle/maintain goal and still enjoy food and life. It doesn't have to be one or the other.
And besides all that, "fat" and "skinny" are both relative.0 -
Would you rather...
always be 10lbs over your ideal weight. (still healthy, still look good, just a little more than you would like to be) And still be able to enjoy yourself on holidays, vacations, birthday parties, occasional cheat days, etc, while keeping track the rest of the time.
or...be at your ideal weight but NEVER allow yourself to go over on your calories, and working out for hours a day to make up for any high calorie/fat/ and sugar foods you allow yourself?
To each his own... but for me: FAT AND HAPPY ALL THE WAY! I feel like as long as I'm being healthy 80-90% of the time... I Love food! I want to enjoy it when I eat it, and not feel horrible about myself for eating things I really enjoy.

Gee... I am not fat, nor am I unhappy. I have my cheat days, and I have my ideal body weight... I just try to exercise and eat my fav foods in moderation.

Erm.....Fit people can relax and have fun and eat birthday cakes and thanksgiving dinner...so....neither.

You asked for my thoughts...so here goes...
I don't think I will have to stay 10lbs over my ideal weight to handle vacations, birthday parties and the occasional cheat day. If I work out like I should to stay healthy my metabolism will take care of those occasional things. Being fat hasn't made me happy at all so....I choose to keep working out...enjoy life and have it all. :ohwell:0 -
I am at my ideal weight and I take rest days (and rest weeks) and I am still be able to enjoy myself on holidays, vacations, birthday parties, occasional Treat Days (it's not cheating to have a treat day) and treats regularly. Also, I love my physical activity. And I have never starved. So I choose fit, slender and happy.0

I used to be lean, fit, and muscular...I enjoyed hiking, biking, running, walking, skiing, lifting weights, etc...I was never starving in those days. I don't know what happened, but somewhere along the line I determined that every meal should be like Thanksgiving and every night I should drink like it was Saturday night...the fat and happy mentality I suppose...I went from being healthy, fit, and happy (and in no way starving) to being fat, unable to do the things I love, miserable, and with medical conditions (which thankfully are still reversible) attributable to a horrible diet and lack of activity.
Having tried both, I'll take fit and happy...but no starving involved whatsoever.0 -

It doesn't have to be one extreme or the other. Whether intended or not, your post gives off the idea that there are only those 2 options you listed.

Why does "happiness" automatically revolve around what weight you are?
Do other things in your life not make you happy or sad?
Will my "happiness" come delivered in the post once I reach 10lb above goal weight?
Can't you take care of yourself whatever size you are?
Are all "skinny" people starving?

So... looks like a lot of people didn't actually read the post and just went off of the title.
While I personally will never be at my ideal weight... had a body fat analysis done a few years ago... even if I lost EVERY ounce of fat on my body I'd still be 10-15lbs over my ideal weight...
Point being, I would rather be able to enjoy myself and not be constantly punishing myself if I eat one piece of cake at a wedding that I will go to 3 times a year, I'd rather still be at a healthy weight and be able to enjoy food and life than it my IDEAL weight and NEVER allowing myself a holiday.0 -
Fat and happy...life's too short. My choice though, someone else feels differently.0
