If you eat enough protien are shakes neccesary?

If I eat a well balanced diet that includes plenty of protein through out my day, is it necessary for me to run home right after the gym to gulp down a shake?

Nope it's a supplement, not everyone needs to supplement their diet. Anyway why would you run home to have a shake? Just take it to the gym and sip it as you are stretching or changing, being a convenience food is half the point of protein powders.

Nope - although I do tend to have milk and a banana post gym as my 'protein shake'

Because I make it into a whole smoothie with spinach, almond milk, strawberries, ice, etc. So I can't really take it with me.

    Sounds perfect!

No, but you should take in about 20g of protein within an hour of a hard workout.

Are you trying to lose weight or build muscle or what? You don't need any shakes to lose weight. You can drink chocolate milk shakes if you feel left out, though. (And indeed, I've been drinking chocolate milk shakes just because they taste great.)

No shakes are not necessary and there is no reason to drink one within a certain time window after a workout. Just make sure you get enough protein throughout the day and you will be fine.
  • I'll add an extra scoop of protein powder in every now and then but that is just when I need a bit of help for the day to reach my protein macro...
  • Thanks for the great input everyone :-)

Well look at that, Dr Oz actually espouses useful and accurate information from time to time.

    Back pedaling here,

I don't like the possibility of being stuck on dogma, so I did some wandering around: looks like the post workout info I've been running on is outdated.

here is a link that SEEMS to be breaking it down well based on current research (would have been nice to get this info instead of a snarky response, still not crazy bout that but I'll get over it)

tldr: guys saying hit your macros and don't worry about it are right

It's not really that important if your pre-workout meal is in order

I find when I don't have my post-workout shake I get a lot more muscle soreness and stiffness than when I bring my shake. And I eat a ton of protein. Just my own experience.

Nope, there just handy for people (like me). Constantly busy, its easier to grab a quick shake than broil some chicken or egg.

Most protein powders contain BCAAs, which are supposed to help with that. They aren't necessary, but they do help with more than just getting your protein macros. I use them because I get hungry after a workout, but I don't necessarily feel like taking a lot of time to prepare a regular meal. Plus they feel like a dessert, to me.

I do a lot of kale and fruit shakes, and they don't always have to be just about protein. I lift a lot of weight so sure I do my protein shakes but I want to also make sure I'm getting my vitamins and a shake is a great way to do this without adding any protein.

It really all depends upon you. I enjoy coming home and replenishing. But I lift heavy and do some collateral damage :)

I work out at 0300 (that's 3:00 am) then come home, have a shake or other high protein meal, shower and head to work. It keeps me satisfied until I can work in meal number 2.

    Cheers!

    :)

You don't need a post anything.

To the OP, if you have met your protein needs you're good. They are not needed.

And that give you what? About 14 grams of protein?

Your answer is right there in your question. If you're eating enough protein, then you don't have to supplement. You supplement when you're not getting enough of something

"Enough protein" depends on your weight and whether you are doing strength training, in which case you should be consuming 1 - 1.5 grams per pound of body weight
