Well, just under a month ago i went into hospital with a severe gallbladder infection and attack and have been scheduled for surgery in the next month ir so. in the meantime i have been advised to follow a low fat diet so i took the opportunity to make some lifestyle changes.
I have been following a low fat 1200 calorie diet for three weeks and weighed myself only to discover i have put weight on. i have to admit that prior to these changes, i ate what i wanted and more often than not skipped meals. i had no appetite. i am now eating regular healthy meals and actually am struggling to reach the 1200calories recommended. any ideas why i have put weight on? i am exercising for 30 mins every day walking the dog at 3mph
Th anks

You're undereating if you're eating 1200 calories and not eating back your exercise calories. Your remedy is simple...
Eat.0 -
Your not eating enough..
1200 calories is no where near enough to sustain your body and exercise.
i can't my link for the road map.. someone should be on soon with it.. .0 -
If you want, check out this link by MFPer Heliotsdan - It'll give you a detailed walkthrough (with pictures even) on finding your TDEE and calculating what you should be eating.

Or for a different version to figure out your TDEE, as well as some great advice...check out:

Also, if you are worried about the calorie intake, I also suggest you read this thread that has numerous people who met their goals and are maintaining. Some for years and they also provide their calorie intake and how often they work out.

For those eating below their BMR (which I think 1200 is below your BMR to be honest), not going to preach at you, but here's something you might want to look at:

Yes, this is can all be overwhelming and complicated , but you are more than welcome to ask questions on the post.
One of the things that I have found that has been one of the best methods for me to get fit is to understand fitness. To understand where all these figures, etc come from.
The good thing is once you get the hang of it - it is something you'll be aware of constantly and you'll get a better understanding about your eating habits.
So I HIGHLY suggest making the effort to take every chance to educate yourself. Even if you don't end up going with any of these methods, calculations, etc - at least you understand what they are, where others are coming from, and maybe they will still be able to help you figure out what is best for you.0 -
You are having medical issues right now. I would keep eating the healthly diet and exercise if possible. But I would not really expect to loose weight until your body is back in balance.0

My fitness pal recommended 1200 and i struggle to get there i seem to be constantly eating, something i am not used to! i will try to eat more!0

Eat.
This is right. I was on 1200 up until last week. Now I'm 1500 on rest days -2000 on the days i exercise and the weight i gained going 1200 is already gone. Eat more.0 -
I had the exact same problem, years of eating poorly only to have everything change when I had a gall bladder attack. What a wake up call that pain was!!!! I also have an underactive thyroid which makes weight loss hard.
Anyway, don't give up or get discouraged. Its very likely your body is in a state of toxicity (the gall bladder affects digestive enzymes and how you process food and nutrients. Everything is out of order right now). Your body needs some time to come back into working properly. Make the healthy eating changes you need to make to take care of your gall bladder issue and your weight loss will follow. It took me 8 weeks to make the first 10 pounds. I would lose two or three and then suddenly gain back four. Then I'd lose a few more and then gain it back again. But now, the weight loss has flattened out to slow and steady decreases. It will happen!!
Many here reiterate the TDEE and the road map. I found that path didn't work for me, so you have to find out what works for you. MFP calories/plan work for me, it wasn't necessary to go through all the math.
Just remember, the changes you are making are for your health and your life. Eat properly, don't starve yourself, try to get well balanced nutrition. Stay the course, slow and steady wins the race. Good luck with your surgery. (Try walking too, it will help with the healing your body needs to go through to recover from the surgery).0 -
Thank you everyone! lots for me to digest, as well as the food, it just seems very alien to be eating more now i am on a diet than i was before, i think my metabolic clock has slowed, perhaps this is why i always feel tired,
You all been very helpful thanks0
