Jump rope burns more calories than any other exercise

Thats a big fat lie, kettlebell burns a million times more. 20 calories per minute beat that.
Both kettlebells and jump ropes are great. I use both. Although a good burn rate is important of course, it's also about variety, I have jump ropes as part of my routine along with kettlebells.

I do 100 skips every time i go for a pee..And i drink 2 litres of water during work in a cold warehouse...So i probably do anything between 800-1000 skips a day...And yeah they kill me..0

Ok, so I was thinking about this jump roping thing this am while running and I came home and did a little calorie burning research. First off, both get heart rate going so that is great. Jumping rope does not train the body as overall as running or even walking does unless you are training like a boxer or professional athelete and using many movements to do the jumping (ie, one leg to the other double jumping etc).
Please visit healthstatus.com and look at the calories burned estimator. You can put in your weight and the exercise done and it will give you a great estimate for calories burned. I did this today and here are the results
One hour each activity:
Jumping rope 1108 calories
Running 5mph 933
running 6mph 1108
running 7mph 1268
running 8mph 1487
running 10mph 1982
running 12 mph 2464
Obviously, it depends on how fast you are running but if you have trained and you are running at more than 6 mph then keep running, and if you can't run for 6 mph then you are probably not jumping rope at a speed that would burn 1200 calories in an hour because you most likely don't have the stamina to do it at the level a professional athelete would. But if you want JUMP until your heart is content if that keeps you moving.
Who here is running 12mph? Or 10? Actually the turning of the rope works your upper body much more than the swinging of arms during running. I agree that it takes an incredible amount of fitness to try to jump for an hour but I've never seen that duration recommended. Usually 20 mins is sufficient. I'd suggest jumping faster over jumping longer anyway.0 -
I didn't even think of jump roping. I think i will have to buy one on my next errand out0

I started The Asylum workout this past week and the warm-up for a couple videos is jump rope activities (one leg, squats, double-jumps, etc.). I don't remember jumping rope being so tiring when I was a kid LOL It's fun though and definitely increases my heart rate and gets my muscles warmed-up.0

bump cuz i wanna read this later!0

I'd love to jump rope more, I find it easy and fun. But, the pain in my calves for the next 3 days so too much to bear. Even 5-10 minutes of jumping leaves me hurting for days.0

In July I took 4-5 jump-rope classes, where we alternated between 2min jumping sessions and either free weights or stretching. It was a great workout, and with some practice of the different steps, it bacame an enjoyable "burn."
I've now incorporated it into my circuit training days to keep the heart rate up, in between upper body reps. It really keeps me on my toes, and I feel more agile.
Note to the other ladies -- Yes, strap the girls down, and only jump rope with an empty bladder. Have fun!0 -
can't jump but i will get there0

I use a skipping rope t exercise, I can jump rope indoors when it rains or outside on the patio. My daughter does it with me (she's 10!) I do 5 minutes at a time which really makes me sweat! If I do it first thing in the morning then have 40 minutes power walk it seems to work for me.
It's also very cheap!0 -
I jump rope in the drive way with the neighbor kids.... I break out the songs from child hood and sing really loud "I like coffee I like tea... " haha... they think I am fun. Oh.... and the grand daughter is usually with me so I am not just playing with the neighbors.... they have no idea I am exercising they think I am just having fun with them. If you have kids they will love you to play with them
I also do the challenges.... who can do it the longest?... that kind of thing0 -
I bought a jump rope and want to get into it again because I used to love it. As a kid I jumped rope all over the place but now? The few times I've tried have not been pretty. I'll have to practice some more.0

My daughter's soccer coach has suggested that the girls skip rope for 10 minutes a couple of times per week in addition to their regular running - while it is a good aerobic workout his reasoning is fast foot work (same idea as doing ladders).
I skip very occasionally, it's a good workout but about as much fun as watching paint dry. I'll take a good run any day........0 -

Thanks, I am going to investigate. I think this will be something both my husband and I can do.0

No doubt it's a good exercise, but my heart rate monitor says I burn far more calories on an elliptical (at high resistance) than jumping rope.0

omg i tried this the other day, i did 15 and was out of breath, does this get easier/?0

Can't wait to try! I have a jump rope in my garage. Thanks!0

I used to love jumping rope!0

I'm still too fat to jump rope without hurting my knees. I am planning to add it into my exercise routine once I lose 50 more pounds.0

Completely agree with the OP. Jump roping is too often abandoned, but it is just about the best exercise you can get. And yes, it burns about 23 calories per minute.0

I enjoy jumping rope but let's be honest here.. better than any other workout?? Let's do the math.
10 min jog at 10 min/mi pace = 168 calories. 10 min jumping rope at moderate pace = 168 calories
10 min jog at 7 min/mi pace = 235 calories. 10 min jumping rope at fast pace = 201 calories.
You can argue that fast pace may be more in line with 7.5 min mile..some argue it would be faster than 7 min/mi, either way, jumping rope is a good exercise. Just not as good as what has been stated compared to other options.0 -
I'd love to do some jump rope...my weak bladder, on the other hand, does not. lol0

I added jump roping in my July Goals... I got up to 200 jumps! I started at 5 and worked my way up to 25. I did 30 minutes of 5 reps of 25 jumps. Yes, it's hard but so well worth it in the end! My son who is a Marine bet me that he could do 5x more then me...So, being the mother that I am... I took his challenge! Well, I did my 200 jumps,... He did 400 jumps in less then 5 minutes... I got MAD and I did 200 more jumps totaling 400 jumps!!!
HE DID 1000!!! (15 min)
Leason learned... Never challenge a MARINE!! LOL!!
For those of you who want to add Jump Roping to your routine... JUST DO IT AND DON'T GIVE UP!!
(As a Mother of a Marine... when I can't go any further... I tell myself...
This is NOTHING compared to what my son is going through having to serve 4 times in Iraq)
He is my Hero and My MOTIVATION to MOVE ON!... I believe that somewhere INSIDE YOU... You'll find that push, that strength that keeps you going...0 -
I love jumping rope but last time I did it regularly, my calves got pretty big... not something I want, so I haven't been doing it. It did help with endurance, though. It helped me run harder & longer.0

Negative. Sex burns more calories than any other exercise.0
