now, strawberries are supposed to be good for you
and a pound of strawberries is like, ~150 calories, but that was like $4 for what amounts to a snack@@ A burger off the McDonalds $1 menu is like 400 calories!!
Who knew fruit was so expensive!!
are there any other foods that are healthy but people don't eat more often because of economic concerns?

It just occurred to me that this might be better in the "Chit chat" board. if a friendly mod would like to move it there, I would appreciate it : )0

I myself think that $4 is better spent on fruit then at a fast food place. I never have been a fast food eater. Sometimes I hear people say thats alot for one apple usually over $1 but I will say ya but you don't mind spending it on a chocolate bar.0
-
Why really. I don't understand why it should be moved. Seems like a valid question to me. Ad I ate my over priced good for you corner bakery breakfast as opposed to mcdonalds I thought the same thing. Oh well each to his own.0

I want a pound of strawberries....right now. Mmmmm0
-
Intense....that is too many for me!0
-
just think of it this way...you paid 3 dollars to live a bit longer...:) hopefully..thats a great investment0
-
Strawberries are on sale 2 lbs for 3.00 at my grocery store.0
-
We're on vacation and just had chocolate dipped strawberries...yum. I know it's more expensive but I'll take the fruit and veggies over the fast food any day!0
-
I wonder how much sugar is in a pound of strawberries...

lol I eat bags of carrots in a sitting, and grapes....pffft forget it, I eat half the bag before I can get it to the fridge from the store...better fruits and veggies than chips and junk, 4 dollars for a healthy, filling snack, i'd rather have less money and a full belly then more money and a huge tummy0

You spent $4 on a pound of strawberries? Of course produce is expensive out of season, they have to ship it from timbuktu.0
-
I hear you on the expensive side of healthy eating. I try to shop at discount grocery stores especially for produce. I can find strawberries for under $3 per lb. Yesterday I went shopping and found celery for .79 and cherry tomatos for .59 and a bag of apples for $2.89. Now if I can find almond butter for less than $9.0
-
I regularly eat huge dinner plates of broccoli or brussel sprouts!0
-
Your only mistake was buying them out of season. In the summer they can be quite cheap.0

Omg, I do this too! Sometimes it's all I have for dinner because I'm so full! lol.0 -
Buy local. Check out co-ops or a farmers market. Or if you'd rather not go that route, check out bulk stores. Costco has the 4 lb clamshells on sale for $4.99. I've just been buying them frozen b/c it's too hard to find organic strawberries this time of year. Wish I could suck it up and buy the conventional ones b/c $4.99 for 4 pounds is CHEAP.0

There are a lot of healthy, tasty foods that you could have eaten instead of strawberries. Strawberries are not in season now and will be much cheaper in the summer. For now, you may want to stick to apples and oranges for fruit, maybe add a few berries to a fruit salad instead of eating a whole pound by itself. Or get some frozen berries. But in the long run... if that was the best choice today, it was the best choice. Don't sweat it.0

I wish I only had to pay $4 for a pound of strawberries... I pay that for half a pound of them! And the strawberries are local! sigh. Food is so expensive in australia... just like everything else.0
-
who buys just one item off the dollar menu at McDonalds?0
-
when you consider the satiety level of such choices, your $4/lb is way better spent.
have you weighed a $1 fast food snack? you might be surprised to find that it's probably not all that far off from your strawberries.
and strawberries are currently 5 months out of season (maybe a little less in temperate california) unless you live in south america where they're probably just going out of season. so $4 for strawberries in february isn't that big of a price tag, you know? they have to be flown in from somewhere.
so consider yourself lucky!0 -
I got 2 pints of strawberries for $5 last week, and hell yea I'd rather spend that $5 on fruit than on garbage food any day. In the long run it's better for your body, you'll feel better, so it's worth spending a little more in most cases.0
-
Yeah I paid $4 for a pound of strawberries . I couldn't control myself at the grocery store, I could smell them from like 3 ft away loll. I live in Maryland, which I guess is why they're so expensive here, when I was in California produce was MUCH cheaper *homesick*0

One time I picked up a bag of apples and didn't realize they were ORGANIC until I got home and looked at my receipt. I ended up paying about $12us for the bag of apples. At $12 a bag, they really didn't taste that good. Maybe its cause I was a little vexed about how much I paid. LOL0
-
Now you should go and fertilize Smackdolanlds garden. :laugh:0
-
Lol. And what do you get for your 'value' price of $1? A ton of fat, cholesterol, and sodium, and a lack of any vitamins whatsoever. Not to mention increased doctor bills when all that garbage eating catches up to you.
Not going to lie, it is hard to beat the $2 McDonald's special (a McDouble and McChicken, $2 for around 800 calories) on a calories per dollar basis.
What did you get for your $4 though? Fiber. Tons of Vitamin C. Water. Some Folate and some Potassium.
I will second what others are saying though. Buy in season, and if possible, buy in bulk.0 -
you can always start growing your own this year and freeze them...thats what I do...so I have fresh in season and frozen out of season0
-
Around 2 bucks a pound here....i eat four pounds a week:)0
-
Eating a pound of anything isn't a snack.0
-
Lucky for me I live in Nh where we grow a ton of apples so they tend to be cheap but avacodos and mango are things I love but they are pricey.0
