what's in your home gym??

i've decided i need to just suck it up and start a home gym. i am not getting where i want to be just by doing the little bit of exercise i am.... and i have 3 girls that i have to make sure are safe. lol.

i found a picture of myself after i had my second daughter. i was able to go to the gym every day at that point and i took full advantage of that. this time around, i just can't do it! my husband works odd hours, the gym that i WAS going to changed their childcare policy.... you now have to pay for the child to go.

what do y'all have in your home gym? need some ideas!

here's the picture that i found! and this was about 4 months after she was born!

I've added a couple of kettlebells and sandbags since then, and my yoga mats and bosu have to stay in the house because of the dogs.

Most of my equipment was bought off Craigslist. Some of it I made myself (the 20lb medicine ball and the indian clubs you can't really see).

I have a bench, bar, plates, plate load able dumbbells and a rack. I also have a treadmill. We also have a stationary bike I don't use, really and we have a heavy bag and a speed bag that I could, but don't, use. I also have videos and YouTube access.

A pull-up bar and a couple of kettlebells. All I need extra to that is my own bodyweight.

Edit: oh - and my sticky mat and incense burner for my Yoga sessions!

My Weslo treadmill bit the dust so in order to save money, I've started doing workout videos. In the process, I pulled out an old aerobics step that came with a Tamilee Web VHS tape. I have two five lb dumbbells, a stability ball that I plan on using with "Supreme 90", a bicycle that I bought a few years back, workout videos, ankle weights and two workout mats. In my mind I said I don't need to spend money on a new treadmill since I have the equipment below. Use what I already have and save money!

    1. Aerobics step
    2. Two 5 lb dumbbells
    3. Stability ball
    4. Bicycle (for outside when it gets warm)
    5. Workout videos
    6. Ankle weights
    7. Two workout mats

i am in the process of putting mine together. we are waiting to sell our pool table and tax money. i have an old big screen tv and an elliptical so far. but with the extra space with the pool table gone, i plan to get a stationary bike and treadmill. i also want a floor mat. i want to get a ball and other items to use on the mat. and were going to replace the tv with a flat screen for on the wall. i want to be able to hook up my laptop to it and try out workout videos on you tube.

i go to the gym now. but i took on a full time job with overtime. so its hard to stay committed going. i feel like im never home. i also work harder at home when im not being watched. at home i can strip down and draw the curtains and no one will see me in a sports bra. and im an early person and would like to get my cardio done before work. the hours at the gym dont work well for me.

shop craigslist for things to add to your gym. i got an awesome elliptical very very cheap. good luck!

    This is all I use:

    home-made squat cage
    barbell + plates
    home-made lifting platform
    treadmill (bought used)
    bicycle+trainer
2 home-made loadable 90lb concrete blocks with handles that I use for farmer's walk (I love this exercise!)

Fitness equipment is expensive! It takes up a lot of room too.

  • I don't have much of anything but what I want is motivation.

HELP! At 50 years old, having finished the "change of life", sustaining several physical injuries - I need a personal trainer. I can't afford one.

    Anyone want to help me?

Squat rack, bench, one of my barbells. Adjustable height box for box squats in the background. Cambered bar stored on top of the rack. Chains used for chain suspended good mornings or for attaching to the bar to add more weight as you push the weight up.

    rack.jpg

Other barbells used for deadlifts and rows. Giant mirror that was here when we bought the house. 1 of 2 plate trees (one on each side of the rack). Horse stall mats on the floor.

Dumbbell rack. Treadmill that fried so it's no longer here. Pug face.

    I have :
    A tredmill that inclines
    dumb bells( 3, 5 and 8 pounds)
    Bowflex
    Gilad DVD's
    You tube excersise videos

I started with one Gilad DVD, and walking around my neighborhood every day. Eventually added the tredmill, so bad weather is no longer a reason to not excersise. Then added my dumb bells, a few at a time. My husband wanted the Bowflex, but I use it too. I am able to use heavier weights using it! And I can use the bench on it for my dumb bell workouts too.
I use the tredmil every day, and alternate my strength training three times a week; between my dumbbells and the bowflex. Need to buy more dumbbells, and I would love a barbell too.

I used to go to the gym a lot, but it was getting expensive and harder to get to. I decided 2 years ago to build my home gym in my basement. I like to roll out of bed at 5am and get my workout in before heading off to work. It's very convenient to be able to workout then make a healthy breakfast before work. I've slowly added equipment as I needed.

    My gym includes:
    Weider home gym
    Elliptical
    Treadmill
    Bike trainer
    Heavy bag
    Pull up bar
    Dumbbells (various weights)
    Elastic bands (various resistant)
Home made T-handle (like an adjustable kettle bell)
    Floor mat
    Medicine balls
    Stability ball (aka: exercise ball)
    Foam roller
Workout videos (P90X, P90X2, & Insanity are my favs)

    My home gym consists of:

    3 sets of dumbbells- 5,10,15#
    Mat for floor exercises
    Bench
    Treadmill
Stability ball (just bought that yesterday and am very excited about using it!)
TV/VHS combo and DVD player (but the DVD player doesn't work and the TV eats VHS tapes- so that doesn't count at the moment)

My gym includes bowflex dumbbells and a pull-up bar. Thats it and I've gotten far & away better results than when I had a bench and 300 and some pounds of plates and when I went to the gym.

I work out in my living room, so I try to get the maximum use out of minimal equipment. In my living room, I have:
-- Yoga mats, strap and block. The mat gets used for all kinds of work, not just yoga.
-- Adjustable dumbbells and a set of 5lb. dumbbells
-- foam roller (3' long, full round). I use this for massage, for balance exercises, and in place of a weight bench for any move that would be done lying flat back on a bench. The nice thing about this is that I have to engage my core more in order to keep the roller stable.

I like to see how much use I can get out of other stuff that isn't actually workout equipment, like using the stairs for step-up moves or calf raises, or using the firm ottoman for split squats. It helps to get creative!

I've also got my hoops for my daily hoop dance practice, but that's not everyone's standard workout.
