I want to know the concept or piece of advice that started your weight loss or success...what was the advice or thing that changed it all FOR YOU.

Being turned onto MFP. No, I'm not a suckup! :p But learning about counting calories, and then meeting this whole community of awesome people with awesome insights, experience and advice was the biggest push twd fitness I needed.

I forget who told me about MFP. I think I may have just done an app search for "calorie counter" on my phone....

One thing I heard that stuck in my mind- - when you eat something- ask yourself- what is this food doing for my body?

Also- I recommend Michael Pollan's food rules - if you can't pronounce it, don't eat it!

Read all labels, and understand what you are eating.
Soon, you'll be making almost all your food from scratch.

Best thing I was ever told..

Change occurs when the pain of remaining the same is greater than the pain of changing.

Every time I wanted to give up I would tell myself how bad it felt to be overweight and how I deserved to be healthy and happy.

Feed my brain healthy fat so I wouldn't be hungry, such as sugarless plain coconut flakes, avocados, whole eggs, and olives.

Never bypass hard work for quick type results and never try to get something that is not due to you. Make a commitment and forge your body rep by rep under the iron.

Best advice I was given and that I try hard to pass on is to make sure to eat ENOUGH. So many people get into the very low calorie trap and think that's the only way to lose weight. I was and still am amazed at the amount of calories I am able to eat and still lose weight.

Also- I recommend Michael Pollan's food rules - if you can't pronounce it, don't eat it!

By that logic, chemistry students can eat anything and my best friend can't eat quesadillas.

The best advice I got was to look for pictures of people I want to look like. I'm primarily interested in muscle building, rather than weight loss (although at the moment I'm working on dropping body fat), and this helped me get an idea of what areas to focus on to build the body I want.

    Log your food.
  • Don't eat mindlessly. If you want to eat something, think about it and then choose to eat it.

    Not advice, but--

Imagine a roll of paper towel. You can use half the roll before you can tell you've even used a single sheet. But as you get closer and closer to the core, you can absolutely tell the roll is getting smaller sheet by sheet. ... It's the same kind of thing when it comes to seeing fat coming off your body.

    More advicey type stuff--

With exercise, start slow. Maybe you think you 'ought' to be able to walk or run at a certain pace, but you don't need to prove it to yourself the very first time. Start slow so that you can see yourself progress, and so that you don't wear yourself out (emotionally as much as physically) trying to maintain a pace that you're really not ready for. There will be plenty of time to make it harder.

Don't be ashamed of your body. Ever. It's yours, and it's the only one you've got, and you have to find a way to love it no matter what shape it's in. Give it love by showing it that you care about it, that you acknowledge it, and that you want to improve it. But don't ever, ever be ashamed of it.

Consistency, never giving up and not letting one bad day/meal send you off track. The 'diet' does not start on Monday, it starts now

Log all the food you eat and do it in any simple calculator, such as MFP( accuracy is not as necessary as ballpark). In its simplicity you just become so unaware of all calories that it it much easier to resist temptation. Or make a better choice.

When life gives you lemons, make apple juice.

Then wonder how the hell you did it.
  • Best advice I read in a column somewhere but can't remember where: Remember that food is designed to sustain and nourish you. Its not a treat. Stop thinking of food as a reward and think of it as fuel.

When I first started with my trainer, she was giving me a nutritional meal plan removing all my favorite junk foods and my eyes must have been popping out of my head, cause then she said, "It's Just Food." Not sure why, but it made me realize what an emotional attachment I had made to my food, and changing the types of food shouldn't be such a devastating, scary prospect.

Some other motivational phrases I like:

It Doesn't Get Easier. You Just Get Better.

Every Second is a Chance to Turn Your Life Around.

Stop wishing for it. Start working for it.

It's never too late to become what you might have been.

Some of the best advice I've been given is to listen to my body. If I'm hungry, I'll eat. If I feel like I need a rest day, I'll take one.

Also to eat often. I try not to go more than three hours without eating. That has put an end to my binges and I feel more energised and awake.

Decide what you're going to do, make it realistic, and then be consistent with it. Consistency is key.

Also, focus on the process, and progress will follow.
