forever 9 clean detox??

Hi guys I have just finished a discussion with a friend about weight loss. I explained MFP and how it all worked and to cut a long story short she was not impressed with how MFP recommends max weight loss to 0.5 - 2lb a week. Instead she is raving about this forever 9 clean detox and how she can lose up to 9lb in 5 days or something like that! I tried to explain that this site helps to get you to a better lifestyle etc and that her detox wasnt going to help her in the long run (prob lose water and not much fat). Anyway friendship is more important and each to their own. But she and I were curious as to if anyone on MFP has tried/ or heard about this detox and if it worked. She is now thinking it might be a great kick start. Well guys whats your opinion?

No. Waste of money and she'll probably gain 10 lbs when it is over. What is she trying to detox from anyway? You know our bodies detox naturally.
  • Who knows! LOL tried to explain, now Iam being supportive of her choice

And most of her weight loss will be water, not fat. You need a 3,500 calorie deficit to lose 1 Lb of actual fat in one week. Just to put it into perspective...for me, that would mean I would have to net a negative 13,300 calories per week or negative 1,900 calories per day...and I'd probably be dead in about a week...probably less.

I have actually used this detox and managed to lose 5 lbs in a week and have since kept it off. I am not a big girl so did not expect to lose too much but seeing my work colleague lose 9 lbs over a week (and is still losing weight with forever products) I had to give it a go myself.

All I'm saying is please do not knock something before you try it as everyone in my workplace was skeptical and thought it was a waste of money and the weight would be put back on, but they were proven wrong to the point were many have been inspired and are watching their diet and are even using the shakes for lunch). It has been over two months since I completed it and I am continuing to use Aloe Vera gel in the mornings and the Aminotein shake for lunch just because I think they are great products that make me feel cleansed and nourished. That coupled with this site and regular exercise is working wonders for me.

I only recommend this detox because I have actually used it and have seen real results, the same way I am now recommending my friends and colleagues to use this site. Its a shame many people are ready to dismiss something that could actually work for them before even trying.

Our bodies do not "detox naturally". If we were all on the perfect diet that God intended this would be true. Did you know that some toxins such as certain pesticides get stored in The your body fat? the only way to truly "detox" your body is to adopt a whole foods lifestyle. Any refined carbs or sugar or anything else, will just keep your "toxic" state rolling. Don't forget the environmental "toxins" as well. Our kidneys, liver, and bowels can only do so much. People who think we "detox naturally" are really not thinking about the real ways our bodies store certain chemicals.

Beyoncé dropped 20 pounds in two weeks by going on master cleanse, a popular 10-day liquid detox diet. Starving your body of vital nutrients after a prolonged period can wreak havoc on your system. A British woman suffered permanent brain damage after only one week of being on a nutritionist-prescribed diet. Read on to find out what else detox diets are doing to your body.

    Liquid Bowel Movements
Frequent liquid bowel movements can result from a shortage of nutrients such as zinc, protein, vitamin A and B, which help build the intestinal lining. Excessive diarrhea can lead to dehydration, abdominal pain and electrolyte loss. Electrolytes are ionized molecules responsible for facilitating osmosis, the passage of fluid between cells, and regulating the neuromuscular, endocrine and excretory systems. Symptoms of an electrolyte imbalance include fatigue, cardiac arrhythmia and nausea.

    Hair Loss
Richard Simmons attributes going bald at age 19 to crash dieting. I know, his hair should have its own zip code, but that only happened after he had 4,000 hair follicles transplanted. Lack of vitamins and minerals in the body can result in brittle hair, which can eventually fall out.

    Vitamin Deficiency
When you're ingesting little more than lemon water with a sprinkle of cayenne pepper, the body has no way of replenishing vitamins and nutrients. If you stay on a calorie restrictive diet for more than a week, you may begin to experience side effects from nutrient deficiencies. People who don't consume enough vitamin A can suffer from night blindness and run a high risk of infection. Folate deficiencies can result in weakness, headaches, heart palpitations, irritability and memory loss.

    Brain Damage
After being on a severely restrictive diet prescribed by her nutritionist, a British woman incurred permanent brain damage affecting her memory, speech and concentration. Dawn Page, 52, suffered from severe vomiting and an epileptic fit after only one week of being on the "Amazing Hydration Diet." The diet called for her to reduce her salt intake and consume six pints of water per day. When the kidneys are unable to excrete excess water, sodium levels become diluted and result in water intoxication or hyponatremia. A sodium deficiency in the plasma protecting Page's brain allowed water to enter, which ultimately caused brain damage.

    Muscle Breakdown
Extreme low-calorie diets can force the body into starvation mode. "Of course, this is the perfect solution if you're in a famine situation," says Sari Greaves, RD, CDN spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. "But if you're trying to lose weight, it's going to do little to help you shift those unwanted pounds." The body clings to fat cells and breaks down lean tissue or muscle to provide the calories necessary to function. As you begin to experience muscle loss, the metabolism begins to slow. Once the diet ends, your metabolism will remain slow, fewer calories will be burned and fat will continue to build until the lost muscle is restored.

    Cardiac Arrhythmia
In 2006, a 25-year-old British woman died due to cardiac arrhythmia after spending six months on a crash diet. Matilda Callaghan dropped 140 pounds from her original 462-pound frame on a diet that permitted little more than three packets of powdered food per day. Because of the rapid weight loss, Callaghan may have experienced an electrolyte imbalance, which could have resulted in an irregular heartbeat. To avoid heart-related problems when dieting, especially if you've experienced past arrhythmias, take it slow and aim to lose only 0.5 to 1 lb. per week, says Greaves.

    Depression
Detox diets deplete the body of much-needed nutrients, including folic acid and vitamin B-12. Being deficient in these vitamins has been shown to trigger or exacerbate depressive symptoms, according to the Mayo Clinic. This deficiency coupled with low blood sugar can result in headaches, mood swings and, ultimately, depression.

    Bowel Perforation
Colonic irrigation, a fancy word for an enema, is a steadfast requirement for some detox diets. While doctor-controlled enemas can relieve severe constipation, colonic irrigations done in the home can be dangerous if not performed properly. Internal bleeding may result if the bowel or rectal tissue is accidentally ruptured, which can lead to infection and death if not cared for properly.

    Gallstones
A severe change in eating habits associated with crash diets can result in gallstones. According to the Mayo Clinic, as the body metabolizes fat during prolonged fasting and rapid weight loss, the liver secretes extra cholesterol into bile, which can cause gallstones.

    Anemia
Restrictive eating can result in vitamin deficiencies across the spectrum. An iron deficiency inhibits the body from producing hemoglobins, a substance in red blood cells that enables oxygen transfer. Additionally, riboflavin, or vitamin B2, found in yogurt, almonds and soy nuts, supports the body's absorption of iron. A deficiency can result in a sore mouth and throat, skin rash and even anemia.

    Reduced Immune System
As your body transitions from a healthy state into starvation mode, every cell becomes stressed and tries to hold onto every nutrient it has. As the vitamins and calories begin to dwindle, systems throughout your body begin to shut down, including your immune system. If you remain on a restrictive diet for long enough, your body will no longer be able to fight off bacteria and viruses, which will lead to infection and illness.

    Pallid Complexion
Starvation stresses the body, and any kind of stress or malnourishment can negatively influence the way your skin looks, no matter what kind of acne medication or birth control pill you're on. Without the proper nutrients, your skin will no longer have a healthful glow, and a severe vitamin A deficiency can result in scaly skin.

BPA is one that actually disrupts the bodies hormones. I guess I should have mentioned in my first comment, that just because your body eliminates something, that does not mean it did not do some damage while it was in your body. You are welcome to bring some proof of you unfounded, and unsupported claims. I would love to see some evidence that what I say is false.

I like how people list all these side effects of any kind of means of healing the body , or anything that wasn't made by some big pharmaceutical industry. Have you ever seen or heard of any of the side effects from any medicine bottle? Some even have black box warnings. Doctor prescribed meds hurt just as many people as any natural remedy if not more.

I did the Master Cleanse for over two weeks, once upon a time, while running several miles per day.

    Did I die? Nope.

Did the numbers fall on the scale? Yup

Did I look healthy and fit? Not even a little bit.

Do you want to look good, or do you just want the number on the scale to drop? Because those are not the same thing.

In order to lose 9 pounds of non-water weight in 5 days, you would have to create a deficit of 31 500 calories. Not going to happen. She's fooling herself.

It's reasons like this that people are confused. Read the post above yours. Were you in a 1900 calorie deficit? If not, then you lost water weight and water has no caloric value.
It's important on a public forum that if you're going to pass information off as credible, that it's not just anecdotal.

funny thing is, I've never heard 1 toxin that is detoxed. I've asked and asked and asked. Even asked a company that sells a juice detox. They offered to sell me a book.

Lead has a half life in human blood of approximately 30 days during which time the body eliminates it naturally. Treatment entails removal of the source of Pb. In instances of lethal blood levels, treatment is chelation therapy.
Half life of mercury is approximately 60 days during which time the body eliminates it naturally. Treatment entails removal of the source of Hg. In instances of lethal blood levels, treatment is chelation therapy.

We can also discuss pesticides with the preface that they are designed to kill things. However, we're not looking at how nasty pesticides are, but rather pesticides as the antecedent to what we ingest, and the rate of ingestion and the rate of elimination of pesticides. This will vary pretty substantially based on what is employed when and how and what you ingest.

But because there is no correlation between pesticide-treated produce and adverse health effects outside of the realm of hokum and snake oil, it will be a hard discussion to endure.

Oh. This was confusing - - you are against the critique of natural healing but earlier you said
Our bodies do not "detox naturally".
For some reason I'm reading that as a contradiction.

I believe that our bodies 'automatically' process chemicals because of measurable and repeatable scientific proof which conclusively has proven that they do - Hg and Pb levels (for instance) fall over time. But I think maybe I misunderstood, and you're not saying that is false, but rather you're saying that eating a certain diet can potentially accelerate the body's processing of toxins. I haven't seen scientifically valid evidence to substantiate that yet; although I've seen lots of claims.

The body will eventually eliminate some things. However the damage that has been done as a result of having had/ or continuing to ingest, these offenders does not go away. It is better to prevent taking these things in than it is to just wait for it to go away.

I am sure it is confusing to one who is on the attack. I am not against critique of natural healing, I am against the mindset that all natural healing is bad, all man made meds are good. This is not a hard concept to grasp. I do not support the use of cleanses. How ever that does not mean I do not support natural remedies or healing, and that does not mean that I believe ALL natural healing works, or is safe. You see, I have a brain that I actually think with. I use it allllllll the time. I tend to look for the best way to take care of my body on all fronts, not just one. There is a good and bad side to everything. Modern medicine had it's good and bad along with anything else.
And sure, our bodies DO process chemicals, but that does not render those chemicals harmless. Your body might process a diet pill, and that diet pill may cause you a heart problem. Processing does not equal no ramifications of said chemical.

I am actualy against cleanses because I do not think they work. I am also not for this mentality that natural healing is evil and dangerous while rainbows hang over the pharmaceutical industry. The fact is that there CAN be dangers of ANY thing that goes into the body or any means used to remedy any kind of problem. That's a fact jack.

This is getting nasty. From the outside, they were pointing out things you said that were actually contradictory.
