Dr. Oz show topic on Calcium....drink milk to lose weight??

I was watching Dr. Oz the other day and he had on some dude who was a fitness "hip hop" dance star of some sort who has a video out for weight loss...they went through a segment of foods you should eat to lose weight faster and it got me thinking...am I getting enough calcium?? Up until now I have been careful as to how much, cheese and milk I drink because of course...they are full of fat and calories!!! But on this show the guy explained that when dieting, your body starts storing fat even worse because you aren't getting enough calcium and "good" fat in your body so it starts storing ALL fats...almost in a starvation mode I suppose...Anyone have any information on this, any scientific take or opinion? Should I be taking a calcium supplement to make sure I am getting enough everyday??

The only thing that will cause your body to store fat is extra calories.
Milk is a great addition to any diet though (steer clear of those who believe milk is the worse thing on the planet to be consuming) provided you are not lactose intolerant.
Drink your milk. Don't mind the fats in it. You need fats in your diet.
I don't believe calcium will actually help you lose weight. Foods will not make you lose weight faster. They don't speed your metablism, they don't burn belly fat, etc.
I would try not to pay attention to much Dr Oz says. He just pushes the latest fad or pill that companies pay him to push. There are some good tips on his show but a lot of the time it's crap.
Ultimately, you will lose weight from a deficit and gain weight from consuming too many calories than you need.0 -
Ok, thats kind of what I thought...I don't really ever watch Dr.Oz...hes incredibly boring and looks like my old doctor that I use to have...very wierd..But I had to ask, I mean, the guy who was actually talking about it looked fit and like he knew what he was doing...I guess thats the glory of television, one ounce of truth and the rest is all bull0

I don't take much that Dr. Oz says seriously, and I'm not sure if calcium prevents fat storage.
However, calcium intake can help prevent osteoporosis, so it's alwasy good to get plenty of it.
As far as cheese and dairy being full of fat and calories - it's really not that bad. Does it have fat? Yes, but fat doesn't make you fat. And the calories aren't that high. A piece of light string cheese is 50 cals (the brand I buy). A half a cup of milk is 51 cals (2%). You should be able to make that work in your macros.0 -

No food will target fat loss anywhere on the body. No exercise will target fat anywhere on the body.0 -
There was a study that came out a few weeks ago showing that dairy/calcium had no effect on fat loss whatsoever.0

Create a calorie deficit to lose weight...Drink milk if you think it tastes good, it fits your calorie goal, and you have no intolerances to it. The OZ show will be on everyday pushing something new to stay on the air. Whether it's valid is a distant second to whether people will watch the show.0

If I followed everything Dr. Oz recommends I would be bankrupt, skinny, fat, taking thousands of pills a day and probably very gassy. The problem is that sometimes he does have legitimate information, but it's so hard to tell what's real and what's "paid for". My rule of thumb is to always research what he says, if you actually have any interest in doing so.
The one thing of his that I am trying is the Krill Oil, only because my REAL doctor also suggested I try it for a few months to see if it lowers my cholesterol. My hopes of it working are not because of Dr. Oz, but because of Dr. My Doctor.0 -

Yes, I had read this a few years back. There are several studies out there showing that calcium from dairy sources (the best being yogurt) does aid in more fat loss and seems to help preserve more muscle.
Here's another study stating the same thing. As I said if you research it there is plenty of evidence out there supporting this. Though normally I wouldn't believe a word Dr. Oz says. :laugh:

I was watching Dr. Oz the other day and he had on some dude who was a fitness "hip hop" dance star of some sort who has a video out for weight loss...they went through a segment of foods you should eat to lose weight faster and it got me thinking...am I getting enough calcium?? Up until now I have been careful as to how much, cheese and milk I drink because of course...they are full of fat and calories!!! But on this show the guy explained that when dieting, your body starts storing fat even worse because you aren't getting enough calcium and "good" fat in your body so it starts storing ALL fats...almost in a starvation mode I suppose...Anyone have any information on this, any scientific take or opinion? Should I be taking a calcium supplement to make sure I am getting enough everyday??

I don't know if what the guy is claiming is right or not but I do know that when I cut out milk from my diet I do better with weight loss. I take a calcium supplement with my vitamin d, so I know I'm okay on my calcium levels.

My doc had me taking calcium and vitamin d. Neither hurt and can only help! Women especailly need calcium. I wouldn't worry about drinking milk purposefully, just take the suppliment.0

eat more leafy greens, spinach, romaine or red leaf lettuce. TONS of calcium...very few calories.
in addition, your body can't absorb calcium without vitamin D. so you need to get both in the appropriate quantities.0 -

You can get your calcium with green leafy veggies and all kinds of other things. And if you're still concerned, you can always take a calcium supplement (which is actually recommended for women over 40 I believe). I've never been a milk drinker, I just don't like it, and I've recently cut pretty much all dairy out of my diet, and my skin has never looked better, my digestive tract has never been happier. Dairy is NOT mandatory.0
