I really like the pure protein - whey protein - it tastes really good - i use the vanilla one - never have found a chocolate that works but if I want chocolate I just add a bit of sugar free chocolate syrup

    My typical recipes:
    1 scoop powder
    1 tblsp peanut butter
    1/4 cup 2% milk
1/2 cup dannon light and fit yogurt
    1/2 cup of water
    About 6 ice cubes

    1 scoop powder
    1/2 cup frozen fruit
    1/4 cup 2% milk
1/2 cup dannon light and fit yogurt
    1/2 cup of water
    Ice

When I really need something hardy I add 1/2 cup oatmeal - cool thing about smoothies is you can just about add whatever you want - also adding flax seed is a good boost - and this time of year good fresh berries are available at reasonable costs

And, of course, if you want some added protein then throw in a raw egg - it may sound gross but it really gives a good taste and texture to the drink

I LOVE MM Max Lean Protein Chocolate Mousse Flavor! On days I want a little umph to it I through a 1/2 banana into a blender with it and it is soooooo good! Keep in mind I'm a super picky eater and textures freak me out so the fact that I was able to find something not only tolerable but good is a miracle! It's high protein and fiber but lean so best all all worlds in my opinion!

Not sure if there is a Max Muscle where you live but they have reasonable priced but good quality store brand stuff. I'm not hardcore and on a budget so spending a ton on stuff like this isn't an option.

    Hope that helps =)

I use Lifetime Basics Plant Protein. It's a mix of pea, hemp and rice protein, with some chia seeds thown in for good measure. I've tried blending it with fruit or flavored milks, but find it's best just blended on it's own with water or plain almond or oat milk.

I also use Sprituein. It's a soy protein with spirulina (sp?) algae. It tastes pretty good. I've only had the vanilla though. Blended with cold coffee and a shot of chocolate syrup, it is to die for.

I've been looking for a way to add more nutrients to my smoothies. Adding some protein sounds like a good way to do that. I'm usually hungry 2 hours after a smoothie because it's not as filling. Protein should help, thanks for the suggestion!

I either use Natures Best Isopure Natural (chocolate) or NOW foods Soy Protein Isolate (chocolate). Both of these brands have other options. Natures best has a no carb, low carb, mass and natural formulas in multiple flavors...they are all whey protein isolate based. I tend to prefer the NOW soy isolate formulas better (because I was a vegan for a while and I'm still a vegetarian. Also, note that when you have soy isolate the protein content is 90%. Note that these aren't the most tasty because there are no added fillers (sugars, carbs, ect)...it's pure protein as long as you buy the unflavored. I prefer the chocolate of both and use it and almond milk or soy milk (no fruits/veg/other dairy added).

I am very picky also, but found a brand I like and since it is online, anyone can buy it.

    www.bodybuilding.com

I first tried the sample pack they offer of the whey protein powders and decided which of their flavors I liked (only 3 of the 18 passed my taste test), and now I have protein powder every day to help supplement. My trainer wants to see a 2:1 ratio of carbs:protein for me and this is an easy way for me to reach that goal.

    Good luck!

Unless you are using the protein as a recovery shake for weightlifting I strongly suggest you stay as far away from Whey, or Whey Isolate. There is very good reason for this, message me personally if you want to know why, but Im not going to get into the details on here. Trust me though ok, if you're using it to augment your diet with protein you need to look for Casein or Hemp. NOT WHEY!!! NOT.... WHEY....

    NOT > WHEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

... and whatever you do, dont fall into the Soy Protein trap.... soy is poisonous. The only forms of soy that aren't are basically the fermented ones (miso, etc....)

I use Isoflex after working out with weights only... but for protein augmentation I use Gold Standard 100% Casein.

Soy obviously isn't poisonous...there are plenty of vegetarians and vegans on this board (including myself). Yes, there are debateable issues but it's no more poisonous than stuffing youself full of rotting cow. But, I believe that I'll keep my mouth shut on what else I would like to say. It's up to the OP to make informed decisions regarding the type of protein powder she chooses.

You obviously haven't researched the history of Soy and what is done to it in processing. Soy is full of estrogenic compounds which wreak havok on our systems. I dont really care what you do, keep eating it.... good for you. But do some more research and dont ask a doctor. Try this book for starters: The Whole Soy Story (http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/whole_soy_story.htm)

Im not surprized that I got a reply like this, I was expecting it. The closemindedness on this site is disgusting and shocking seeing as this is supposed to be a place for people who actually care about their health.

The soy industry is a multi billion dollar industry. Soy is in TONNES of products. Does this make it healthy?? NO. It's the same thing as the big Pharm companies selling their drugs. There is money to be made and lots of money to be lost if the real truth were ever to come out.

Just because you're vegan doesn't make you an expert on the topic, on the contrary I find most vegans just lap up whatever they hear in the media without doing alot of their own research. So again, before you go telling me that soy isn't poisonous, do some research on the topic.

and another thing, Im giving my friend advice on protein. She can choose whatever protein she likes, but there are some of us that like to make informed decisions. There is science involved here and each protein has it's own properties.

And you know nothing of the harmful properties of soy??

    Anyhoo...

Sorry Jamie, I hope I didn't ruin your topic. I have researched both sides of the topic of Soy and it's very clear to me what is actually up with soy. Dont take anyones word for it, but please research the topic if you decide to choose a soy protein. It's very important because the mainstream media, many misinformed people on here and probably your doctor will all have you believe that soy is the answer.

    Decide for yourself though.

    Whoa...hold on there, Sparky!
The newest large-scale scientific studies show that soy probably works more as an estrogen modulator, working on estrogen receptors. Without going into all of the scientific data, I'll give you a link below. Most of negative 'research' surrounding soy was created by the Weston Price camp, and is rather dated. Show me a recent large-scale controlled study from a respected medical journal, not a 'scare tactic' web site, and we can talk.

"Arguments are made for considering soy isoflavones as natural selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) based upon recent data of their conformational binding to estrogen receptors. Rebuttal is made to several key and important issues related to the recent concerns about the safety of soy and its constituent isoflavones. Perhaps the greatest misnomer has been the liberal classification of soy isoflavones as ‘estrogens’.:"

The biggest health questions concern fractionated soy products such as soy protein isolates, hydrolyzed soy protein, etc. Stuff like soy burgers, soy powders, soy protein bars, etc. Genistein supplements (the active phytoestrogen isoflavone in soy) are not recommended. But soy in it's whole food form is generally considered safe, and even healthy. As always, EAT REAL FOOD!

Some debate still exists about soy for women who are at risk for breast cancer...some research shows it protective, others in the medical community recommend avoiding it if you have been diagnosed with estrogen-positive breast cancer. That's a question for a doctor, not this board.

Yeah. I'm at a university, so I've got access to pretty much all of the major medical journals. Even a citation would do and I can look up the article myself.

First thing: Show me a food with Soy in it's "whole food form". Short of grabbing a handfull of soybeans, what is there? The food industry is built on processed soy.

Second thing: Medical Journals.... Just because it may be in a Medical Journal doesn't mean it's the truth and you need to get away form this way of thinking. That's as silly as saying it's true because I saw it on TV. Like it or not, they're bought and paid for just like everything else in this world. Lobbyists and powerful figures from the DRUG INDUSTRY control what is printed. The only thing is they are very widely accepted. Im not saying they're total bs either dont get me wrong but you cant just believe everything that is printed in them.

Obviously Medical journals are the be all and end all for alot of you folk which is fine to each his own, so like I said before.... you guys can decide for yourselves or simply let the medical industry decide for you. It feels like suppression to me though.

Well this has gone way off track and I really have no thoughts on the soy issue. However, it's not that medical journals are the "be all and end all" and, yes, medical research has its drawbacks but a double-blind, placebo-controlled published study in a well-respected, peer-reviewed research journal *IS* pretty much the gold standard as concerns medical "facts" as we know them. That's how advancements are made and real contributions to our collective scientific understanding are made. There are definitely some medical practitioners who will admit that not everything lends itself to placebo control but might still have some benefit (how do you have a placebo massage, for example?). So, it isn't perfect, but it makes a good attempt--certainly better than most of the scare-tactic-trying-to-sell-you-something websites.

I dont know where this "scare tactic try to sell you something site" thing came from.... I never once mentioned anything like this.... I gave a link to ONE SINGLE BOOK that I have read on the topic (one among many). Who said I haven't researched medical files and journals? Fact is I think they're very one sided and its easy to see that there is deffinately something for sale there as well.

That wasn't in reference to anything you posted but just a whole lot of websites that I have seen that give claims without anything that actually backs it up. But once again, I am very interested in knowing why you think we should stay away from whey protein. I have honest curiosity because I have used it for years. So, I guess I will look for your new thread.

You've misread my post.... I started another thread on the topic of Whey. Just to make sure though, I never once said to stay away from whey. What I said was whey is not the protein my friend Jamie is looking for. Whey has a very specific use and I find most people dont understand the science behind why it works well as a recovery protein and not so well as a protein for general use. Anyways, no harm done...check my other thread.

Agreed...the food industry is built on processed soy. Bad stuff, in general.

Soy in it's whole food form includes edamame, miso, tofu, tempeh, soy nuts....

I disagree... Miso and Tempeh are both fermented which isn't a whole food form (although probably the safest way to consume soy and very close to whole food). Tofu is deffinately NOT whole food soy as it is highly processed (look into it if you dont believe me, it's one of the most misleading "health" foods out there) and soy nuts are blanched (sometimes chemically) and roasted, so again > not a whole food form. Maybe our opinions differ on what a whole food is, I was always under the impression "whole food" was just that. Natural, untouched food in its raw form. You wouldn't consider potato chips whole food potatos would you?

Back to the topic at hand...

I drink a shake after a great workout, so I use chocolate milk....

    1 cup skim choc milk
1 scoop pure protein vanilla whey
    1 T peanut butter
    ICE.
    Blend...viola, delicious!
this tastes like a choc milk shake, and depending on where I am for calories in the day I might add more peanut butter, or instead of peanut butter I might add a banana. I feel like the choc really helps mask the protein powder
