Sugar intake

Hey guys, I need some opinions. I've stayed under my calorie number consistently since I've started on this site, but I find that I'm always over my sugar number. The sugars come mostly from fruit and protein shakes that I have through out the day. The question I have is, is it ok to go over the sugar number consistently if it's not from actual white sugar?

For me being a diabetic the answer is no. But if your body processes it properly then I would ask your doctor. A lot of questions posted here are best asked to professionals0

Thank you soo much for asking this . I had not really realized how much I was exceeding my daily sugar intake on a daily basis either . Like you, I drink protein shakes and snack on fruits throughout the day . I have consistently stayed under my calorie intake each day and have also consistently lost at least 2 pounds a week . Hopefully , someone can shed some light on this topic and suggest better snack choices for us .0

I can't even see my daily sugar goal. Not sure how to change that setting. But after reading several threads like this one, maybe that's a good thing? I don't know why you would worry about your sugar intake if it's all coming from natural sources, you're getting enough other nutrients, and you're seeing results.0

I make a smoothie with 1/2 avocado, 1 cup of frozen mixed berries (I use Europe's Best 4 field berry blend) with unsweetened almond milk. I throw protein powder into it occasionally and it doesn't have a lot of sugar. My protein powder is flavourless without sugar and only 1-2 grams of carbs.0

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think that as long as I eat healthy and exercise it will all work out in the end. Has anyone else become obsessed with calorie counting since joining? lol.0

I too wondered this - and googled today. Is the fruit/veggie sugar better? One banana almost puts me over every day....ideas on potassium also welcomed!0

Everyone is going to have different opinions - and it probably wouldn't hurt to speak to your doctor if you have concerns.
Personally, I think that if the majority of it comes from fruit etc then I'm not too concerned, it's more the refined sugars I worry about (well, I should worry about - I'm just trying to get back into the swing of calorie counting, so don't want to look at my sugar intake too closely at the moment, haha)0 -
Good point on the refined sugars line. I think that as long as it's not coming from processed foods and "junk" foods I should be good.0

<--- Totally obsessed with calorie counting! I think you have to be if you are determined to make a change . I sort of think of it as my second job,where I get paid in smaller clothes !! Getting back to the sugar intake ... I feel since it is for the most part mostly natural sugar . It should be okay . But I did switch to a new protein drink that has half the sugar of the other .0

It is my unprofessional understanding that you should not really consider natural sugar only processed and added sugar unless you have medical issues. Unless you really overindulge. Come summer time I could eat a whole watermelon myself in a day. I think that would be overinduging.0

Better yet, don't consider sugar at all.
Turn it off and don't track it.
Unless you've got a medical reason, sugar just doesn't matter, except that sugar filled foods tend to be very calorie dense and it's tough to get a satisfying quantity of food that way.0 -

I wanna just turn that part off completely! I think it's retarded. I cant seem to get through even a half of a day before my sugar number is in the red!0

If you are interested in learning more about how sugar affects your body, there is a great book called "Deep Nutrition" that sheds some light on the subject. According to the book, natural sugar is not much better for you than processed sugar. You can lose wait while eating sugar, but the book goes into detail about how sugar affects your cells and may contribute to cancers and other diseases such as dementia. The book recommends keeping your daily sugar intake below 100. However, my goal on MFP is about half that. I'm not sure if the goals here are extra low, but I'm trying to stay below 100g/day. I find it odd that MFP tracks sugars but doesn't give you a net carb count. After all, ALL carbohydrates are essentially sugar, some are just more complex than others. I pay absolutely no attention to the sugar column but I makes sure that my net carbs are never higher than 25g at any meal and less than 75g for the whole day. I usually come in far below that, and yes, I eat fruit. Several times a day even...0

I was once told to eat only those fruits and vegetables 50 and under on the glycemic index. It seems as though bananas, carrots and tomatoes are higher in sugar than fiber. Also I see people are taking a protein shake? Is it ok to take a protein shake if you're not weight lifting? There are a lot of questions in my post, hopefully they can be answered.0

HA. i ate a small apple, 1/2 cup of pineapple and 3 oz plain fat free greek yogurt, and it put my sugar in the red.0 -

Some of us use lower calorie protien shakes as meal replacement :happy:0 -
I don't quit understand the sugar intake...Just by having cereal and milk this morning and a apple and orange I'm over my sugar intake....So we should be eating apples and orange..what kind of fruits are you guys eating...0

I had the same problem, and my nutritionist told me not to worry if it was mainly from fruit and I didn't go wildly over. I still want to track though, so I "fixed" the problem by just changing my goals to allow for an extra 20 grams!
(kinda like how Homer "fixes" the car by putting tape over the check engine kight, haha)0 -
Based on the chart below you should only have 2 servings of fruit a day.. My guess would be because of the sugar but I could be wrong..

I just started watching my sugar intake and trying to keep it very low. since then i have 3.9 lbs and it has helped me not get so hungry during the day.0
