10 people you can't trust for diet advice
http://summertomato.com/10-people-you-cant-trust-for-diet-advice/
From Darya Pino's blog Summer Tomato.
You should read it for yourself (it's not very long) but for those who like it straight and to the point:
1. USDA
2. Food Companies
3. Your mom
4. Celebrities
5. Athletes
6. Cardiologists
7. Main stream media
8. Personal testimony
9. Natural health "gurus"
10. Personal trainers
Thought this was something worth sharing but, if not, then at least possibly just something that would spark some interesting/entertaining conversation.

"As hard as I tried, I could not come up with a way to describe someone who can be trusted for diet advice."
Well, that certainly leaves us in a bad position. Might as well just consult a Ouija board.0 -

Why would a cardiologist not be a good person to ask? Dr. Agatston created the South Beach diet and it has helped sooooo many people lose weight.0 -

This is when you would read the article.0 -
Nice post. I appreciated it.
If I stereotype (and I shall here), of the groups/entities on that list, elite athletes would far and away be the most reliable group of those 10. As a general rule, part of their athletic success is based on exceptional intuition that can't be taught; you just need the right lineage.0 -

Agreeable. But athletes endorse products too. I think the gist of what her point is on the athlete example is intended for people who hear about someone like Michael Phelps, whom has been rumored to eat 12,000 calories per day and swim 80,000 meters, and automatically assume that if they swim a few laps, they should be able to eat that whole footlong they love at Subway (which he endorses by the way). Little stuff like that.0 -

Right: the whole purported 12,000 calorie thing. If the recreational swimmer is that dopey, all the advice in the world won't help them. Thanks again, lotus: I was amused.0 -

I'm not sure what your point is.
Cardiologists don't learn about nutrition even though they go through extensive schooling and training to be in the health field. That's all she was saying.
Nutrition is preventative medicine. Think of it that way. How often do you go see a doctor to prevent a cold/illness from happening (excluding vaccines)?0 -

Yeah MFP posters (if not MFP all together) should have just been number one on that list ;P0 -
Not to be a dissenter, but I actually do trust my mother, a former RN/journalist who is now retired but spends huge amounts of time researching...well, just about everything. Including nutrition and health.
Her advice: Eat more vegetables and healthier portions. And move your butt.
It's been working for me...so far...

Doctors in general, not just cardiologists. My doctor told me that I should limit my carbohydrate intake to 15g per meal which is completely insane according to my nutritionist who is also a registered dietitian and certified diabetes instructor.0
