Why you shouldn't shop at thrift stores if you do already

Thrift Stores creep me out, will always creep me out and smell like.. Piss.
The one by me smells like spaghettios. Not sure why. :ohwell:
Poor people eat spaghettios, didn't you know this?
So by that deduction, they drink piss and eat spaghettios?
This is the most logical explination.
I thought so0 -
Hey I applaude everyone that ONLY buys from the malls. Those name brand clothes sooner or later make their way into my closet at a fraction of the cost. Thank you! :drinker:
you may not donate your name brand clothes but A LOT of people do!!0 -
I'm hot, swallow and shop at thrift stores. Now get in my basement.

I never really shop at thrift stores because I can never find any nice plus size clothes...just floral dresses with shoulder pads. No thanks.
Although I used to work at Value Village and some of the clothes that came in were very cute. A lot of weird stuff came in too - porn mags, sex toys, bongs, cocaine, a loaded hand gun, a huge bag of hash once. Good times.
Sounds like my kind of job! Why'd you leave?? lol
I shop thrift stores all the time. Now I'm gonna start looking for work at one!0 -
HELL YEAH...why would I pay $80 for a pair of jeans I can get for $4.99?0

Soooooo. What did they do with said items? Ahem.0 -
Not reading all the answers, but I did a lot of shopping at thrift stores, mostly Plato's Closet and Clothes Mentor resale shops, on my way down... I went from a size 18 to a size 6, no way I was going to buy NEW clothes in all those sizes. Plus, even at the resale shop I shopped the $1 sale rack
Now that I am at my GOAL size, I only buy new, but I will say I found some pretty good deals at those resale shops, I'm talking $50 pants with the tags still on for $1. I only bought stuff in good condition and mostly stuff with tags still on it when I could. Never shoes or workout clothes, I always found buying used workout gear DISGUSTING!
Dont shop at Goodwill or Salvation Army at all, but my boyfriend has for work clothes that will get ruined within two wears (manual labor job)
ETA: My daughter does love that song "Thrift Shop" or whatever, she thinks it is hilarious0 -
Because someone has already worn them.
Poor
New clothes make you feel good
Poor
The smell
Poor
Do you honestly feel good that you bought a pair of 5 year old jeans for $1.99?
Also, in a year or two, when you decide to donate your used clothes, Goodwill is going to be overrun with Affliction and Ed Hardy shirts...even the poor don't need those.0 -
A lot of wealthy people are frugal, that is how they maintain their wealth. Or they choose to spend their money on more important things like mortgages, vacations, college funds, annuities, etc.
A lot more poor people are walking around with designer bags, clothes, shoes but are just that, poor. They do not own homes, they are not saving money for their children's education. They choose to spend their money on Luis Vuitton handbags and Jordans for their 1 day old baby.
There is nothing wrong with having nice things. There is something wrong with having nice things and not paying your bills. Or having $200 jeans but living at home with mom and dad (beyond school age) But that is another topic....
Just my two cents...0 -

I already had Zac in my basement. He escaped. Tricky little *kitten* that one.0 -

This thread is incorrectly titled. It should be "Why you shouldn't wear second hand clothes". Thrift stores have more than just clothes. They have books (great way to get cheap reads), and alot of other items that can still be used. Clothes can be washed and sanitized. Most people donating clothes donate good stuff and the thrift stores don't sell worn out items (for the most part)
I disagree with the OP on the clothes issue, though I think the intent was humor. Vintage Clothing places sell second hand goods and no one balks. Also, if I was destitute, I wouldn't think twice about wearing second hand clothes. It's also economical and environmental to re-use items. The reasons against second hand use are pretentious at best.
I suggest a more positive outlook in these regards. Thrift stores provide a great service to those in need. I certainly don't look my nose down at these stores or the people who use them. I shop them all the time and find fantastic stuff for almost nothing. Clothes don't make the person. The person makes the clothes!0 -

Sounds good enough to me.0 -

Unless you're poor. Then I'm out.0 -
HELL YEAH...why would I pay $80 for a pair of jeans I can get for $4.99?
RIGHT! I love shopping at plato's closet. Abacrombie, Hollister all those name brands for under $10 each! I got this super awesome NIKE sweater brand new with the tags on it for $14, Originally $65. SCORE!0 -
there's also consignment shops----designer brands for cheap!
I'd go to thrift stores more often if i had any closeby. But I tend to stick to Target, Kohls, Levis, etc... Especially Kohls0 -
Spending $50 on a brand new pair of jeans that I won't be able to wear for more than a year? Idiotic.0

I got a Prada purse (real) for $14 there...the handles are a "little" frayed...hell YEAH I love second hand shops..0 -

The sex toys/porn mags were always thrown out. Bongs too, except when an older, clueless employee would put them out on the floor as a vase, haha. The gun and cocaine we handed over to the police. The hash...I don't really remember what happened with that...*walks away whistling*0 -
Wow...so do you keep them FOREVER and EVER? Amazing...you must have very large closets.
Good! Then I'll get them for free when I go through the rich people trash! Score!!0 -

Ain't nothin' wrong with a little dumpster diving every now and then.0 -
I shop at 2nd Swing Sports....becaue my 4 year old doesn't need $500 worth of new hockey equipment every year until Bantams.0

Lets see do I shop at thrift stores yes, sometimes. For name brand cloths that are cute but too expensive otherwise unless i get them on sale. I've actually found new cloths with tags at TS, but that is another story...Do i buy lucky brand at the outletmall, or Ross sure..but i've never spent 100+ on jeans and do not plan too...raised poor..now i just have to much common sense ( btw i make about 75,000)0

I found a designer coat at Goodwill that was originally $250 and I bought it for $3! I live close to a wealthier part of town, so all the rich people donate their clothes, and I get them for under $10. Love it.0 -
I don't shop at thrifty stores because I have a fear that someone had died in the clothes.
This is also my fear....seriously, it is.
I don't go throwing around money at expensive clothes though...a good sale at Macy's for my work stuff...I get shorts, t-shirts and the like from Costco often. I get my Lucky jeans at Costco whenever they have them...otherwise I do Levis when they have a sale at Macy's or something. All in all, I'm not a big shopper though...wife pretty much has to take me out or I'll just wear my rags until they are very literally, rags.0 -
No time to dig through the racks. I have 3 kids, 2 of whom are impossible to shop with (they run off), so I would rather go to a store I am familiar with and can reach right for something off the rack and not have to go down a whole line of red shirts, weeding out the good and bad (for example). It's not worth the time!0

More to prove a point, than to brag, I bring in a little over 100k a year, I'm not saying I buy all the granny panties at the Thrift stores, but if I see something I like, I'll buy it; why not!? I'll buy designer items IF they are truly "you get what you pay for" worthy, but I'm not going to sit here and DRESS like I am made of money....most of the time, those people are broke as a joke living with their mommas.
Agreed! I have no problem paying a bit more for something that is going to last, hold up in the wash/after several wears. I also have no problem buying really cheap stuff if it is cute and looks good. Forever 21 is one of my favorites for cheap clothes that are unique/trendy.
Really, it's all about appearance to me, not cost. And I am really good at finding deals on things that look fab.0 -
I shop in thrift stores all the time. I've lost two pants sizes in the past few months and don't want to pay full price for "temporary" clothes. I LOVE finding a pair of jeans for $1.99! I do feel good wearing them. I always feel good saving money and still getting something "new" (new to me)!
Me too!!0 -

You never know, the people running the laundromat who stole all of my Tommy Hilfiger clothes a few years ago might have donated them.0 -
No way am I going to dish out $100 for a pair of jeans, only to have my daughter puke on them. I'll stick with Gordmans and Kohl's. Or brand name consignment shops. I'm not against thrift shops like Goodwill, but around here, the jeans they sell look like they'd be in fashion about 20 years ago.0
