Sarcasm + Irony

Sarcasm - A tongue of which the user speaks of something the complete opposite of what the user means. It often has the best comedic value.

Socratic irony - When someone pretends to be naive about a certain subject, and uses his questions about it to point out a flaw in the established belief.

Just thought I'd help a few confused people out by posting these definitions/explanations, as some people seem to patently miss these concepts in other threads, and reply or take offence without reading the rest of the thread or understanding it.

This section is called "Chit-Chat, fun and games" people!!! therefore most of the posts in it are likely to be in jest, so have a laugh every once in a while! If your going to post a reply read at least part of the topic first, don't just reply to your take on the topic title!

The lack of understanding is funny to a point.

The fight between "people are mean" and "we're not mean, we're just having fun" crowd is getting tiring to be honest. Its a pointless fight. It would be far easier if people use sarcasm and people who claim to use sarcasm actually knew the difference between being sarcastic and being a foul mouthed buffoon.

I still vote for a sarcasm smiley. I think that might be the only way some people realise there is humour involved.

I've always felt that if you're going to use sarcasm over the internet you better lay it on pretty damn thick. Sarcasm is generally expressed through tone and inflection and without those it's just really hard to tell, unless it's blatantly obvious. When someone doesn't pick up on it I rarely blame them.

    Here I'll show you.

I think this is a really great thread.

    Am I being sarcastic?
