Where you are, with 20-30 pounds to go, means that your best bet is probably to lose 1/2 to 1 pound per week. If you lose 1 lb per week, it will take you 30 weeks, or about 6 months. You can lose faster, but like others have said, it will probably take a more restrictive diet, making it more likely you'll go back to old habits and gain it back.
Since you're going to the gym, make sure you learn about lifting. Lift "heavy" or not … as long as you are pushing to fatigue, it will help maintain (and possibly build some) muscle mass, which will let you look better faster and at a higher weight, and allow you to maintain at a higher calorie level. And, gauge your progress as much by how clothes fit and by measurements as by the scale.0
