Hi I saw a recipe posted today that had avocado & shrimp, two of my favourite ingredients. However calorie wise an avocado is really high. I've heard it said that it is a good fat ? Can anyone explain?

if you eat too much of it you'll get fat, even if it's good fat
I'm living proof0 -
It is good fat. High Omega 3. Just not too much.0

just eat it in moderation and you will be fine.0 -
Same as nuts...really good for you, really high in fat/calories. Maybe don't eat a whole avocado, maybe don't eat a whole can of nuts. Or do, and then just don't eat something else.0

they're... not their...
and they're good for you. Eat them. In moderation.0 -
Mmmmmm delicious.. delicious avocado calories. It's full of happy goodness. eat them.0

Avocado is actually pretty low-calorie for being so fatty (you can eat half an avocado for the same calories as 1 serving of mayo). They're seriously good for you and help keep you full. Eat them.0

Avacados are awesome in smoothies! Especially with mangos!!!0

Eat it, log it. Enjoy. Simple.0

Also, I probably eat more avocados than most people, and have lost nearly 50 lbs regardless...0

I eat a whole avacado about once every other week. It's a nice splurg. Hasn't hurt my weight loss efforts.
I make my famous guacamole and that's my dinner that night. YUM!!!!!!!0 -
I eat the whole thing! Love it! Fit it in!0

While I don’t suggest eating multiple avocados a day, the good in them (in moderation) outweighs the calories. They are a fantastic source of potassium, vitamins, fiber, etc. They predominately contain heart-healthy fat. I sometimes eat an avocado a day, and I’m still losing weight.
In a nutshell, do not avoid avocados because of calories; just be mindful of the quantity.
P.S. Shrimp & avocado? Yum. You should try making ceviche sometime with shrimp, fish, avocado, tomato, onion, lime juice etc. So yummy when it’s fresh and served chilled!
Good luck on your journey!0 -
it's not that bad. just don't eat a whole avocado! i weigh out either a quarter-half of one and it is less than 100 calories.0

If I eat more than half an avocado, it makes me feel too full... a half is perfect for me... In a smoothie with 1.5 cups worth of other fruit and a cup of kefir and a serving of Greek yogurt... sublime! Goes great with blueberries as well!0

If you keep your protein and carbs at a certain amount of calories where you still have more after for your daily goal then you should be able to include them as much as it allows. Good luck0

So those of you who don't eat a whole one...how do you store the other half without it getting gross?0

Half an avocado is about the same amount of calories as a serving of potato chips. A little more fat, but we need healthy fats to live. Eat avocado.0

it is the good kind of fat that most of us don't get! I absolutely love them!0

All good healthy fats, so I just work it into my calories for the day - over a week I eat 2-3 avo's :-)0

Yes, very good question. I always eat the whole thing, or share with my daughter. They get really nasty once you've sliced into it.
ETA: And as far as "high in calories," that's completely relative. It's about the same number of calories as a candy bar, and I manage to fit those in with no problem.0 -

There are few better fatty foods than avocados. Don't avoid them.0

I cut it in half, remove the stone and cover the extra half as tightly as possible in shrink wrap right away. I store it cut side down in the fridge and it is good for a day.0

Better to eat good fats than processed rubbish. I eat seeds and nuts every day and during the weight loss, my hair, skin and nails have been amazing. Previously when I cut out all fat, I lost the weight but my skin aged masses and my hair went wiry.0

I eat 1/4 of one every day with my omelet for lunch. I start with a whole one, and slice around it in quarters. I pull off one quarter, leaving the seed and rest intact, scope the insides onto my plate, then replace the empty skin in the place it was, covering the exposed areas of the rest of the avocado. I place it then in a baggie and twist it tightly around, then place in the fridge, cut part down. The next day I pull off another quarter and do the same thing, replacing the empty peel. Keeping the seed in place, and the meat covered with the peel, keeps it from going brown.
And 1/4 of a medium sized avocado is only 50 cals. And so good for you. They keep finding more healthy nutrients that are beneficial to our good health.
Plus they are great for digestion, and keeping things regular!0 -
they're... not their...
Thank you. I weep reading these forums sometimes.0
