I know that's a lot of high calorie food, but I highly doubt it adds up to 35,000 calories. It's probably just water weight from all the sodium. Get back to your normal routine and you'll lose it in no time :)
By the way, 120 is awesome! Congrats!

I think waiting a few days after a cheat meal or binge can be helpful. If I go out for pizza on Friday night, I will wait until Monday or Tuesday until I weigh myself. I use Friday morning for my weekly weigh-in. I then chart my weight in a graph.

If you weigh yourself daily, there can be lots of ups and downs that can be emotionally taxing. One day, I exercised 3.5 hours and ate maybe 2,000 calories but had no change. I think it's helpful to look at the big picture. The scale is just one part of being healthy. How do you feel? What are your measurements like? I have also been tracking my waist and hip measurements every other week for the last 18 weeks. I have lost 9 inches in my waist (measured at my navel) in the last 18 weeks. I think that's more of a victory than the 33 pounds that I have lost in the last 18 weeks.

Why on earth did you eat all that food? I don't mean to judge, but that is well beyond the occasional treat some people talk about splurging on. That was a binge. If this becomes a regular behavior for you, you might need to see a specialist.

I agree, this could be a start to a very unhealthy trend.

Seriously unnecessary- comments like that get people even more down then they already are. The OP is young and may have limited knowledge of nutrition and fitness basics. Why shouldn't she come here and ask her questions?

It's Friday, c'mon! Be a good person and just ignore if you think her post is so ridiculous...

Well said. I couldn't agree more.

I will still laugh because 1. she just joined. 2. Its her first post. 3. She hasnt been back to say anything else in 3 pages of replies. 4. I cant believe so many took it serious enough to answer.

Hmmm...interestingly enough, she edited her first post to say that she now understands it's probably water weight and that she appreciates everyone's help. AND, she did that about 15 minutes after the original post and about 50 minutes before you this response saying she hasn't been back. So...yeah...there's that.

10 lb water-weight gain is impressive... If you were old with heart failure, you'd be in the hospital with your lungs drowning. I have to wonder if there weren't some other factors. Maybe the 120 lbs wasn't entirely accurate? Clothes different? Weighed at different times of days?

Anywho, although that day sounds absolutely delicious, ten pound fluctuations-- even if it's just water and excrement-- isn't good for anyone. Get right back on the horse! Good luck!

I'm not sure you understand exactly how water weight gain works.

Also, the average person can fluctuate anywhere from 4-8 lbs on an average day, depending on food choices, when they are weighing themselves, when they last ate/drank, etc. 10 lbs isn't too much of a stretch either. This is the exact reason why the scale is not the preferred choice to gauge success. Measurements, how you feel, how clothes fit, and comparison pictures are way better for showing actual change than the scale is.

    GREAT answer! :flowerforyou:

Umm... Just the piece of pizza alone has 1 day worth of sodium in it. Don't eat anything processed for a couple of days and drink your weight in water and the scale number will go down. Promise.

    In all seriousness...

I haven't done it this go 'round, but the last time, when I had a bad day and would go overboard on the salties and pasta (comfort food), I wouldn't go NEAR the scale. I don't know about anyone else, but I will get "carb bloat" about an hour after eating pasta or bread, and walk around all puffy and blown up looking for the next day or so. Knowing that would make me run the opposite direction from a scale, LOL...

Everyone suggesting lots of water, coffee and tea is reading my mind. I go bananas on water intake if I've had a high sodium day.

no this is not a joke im like crying so much right now....

so yesterday i weighed myself in the morning and in weighed 120 i was so happy...but for some reason i ate really bad i gad

130 cal pack of nilla waefers
    2 large mcdonalds fries
    one reg mcflurry (oreo)
    one small strawberry shake
a thick slice of banana bread
    a BIG cinnamon roll
a slice of pizza with stuffed crust cheese
    some tyson chicken nuggets

I dont know why i ate all that!!!! But im so mad at myself and when i weighed myswlf this morning i was 130 how did i gain 10 pounds):

You know how many calories are in 10lbs of fat? 35,000 calories ABOVE your TDEE.

    So use some common sense.

    TDEE + 35,000 calories = 10lbs gain of fat

Did you consume 35,000 calories? NO you didn't, so it's not fat... stop stressing.
This guy knows his stuff...Seriously, at 120lbs you would probably vomit and be in the hospital if you at that much food in 16 hrs assuming you sleep for 8 hrs. Stop crying....you'll be fine..just eat normal the next few days and your body will regulate back to normal. No Worries...I don't believe in "cheat days" but I guess you could say that's what you had.

I know people keep saying water weight but I put on 6 pounds in a couple of days. Problem I have stayed on the same weight for 3 weeks. That is not water weight for that amount of time and haven't gone over my 1600 calories. I also keep sodium to a minimum.

Today is a new day and a new beginning. It happened, get over it, learn from it, and go on. Also, you may wanna check the batteries in your scale, my sometimes fluctuates when they are low. :) Happy Friday Everyone!!!

How in the world are any of those reasons still good reasons to laugh at someone? And instead of taking her question seriously and answering, people should just ignore it or make fun of her like you did?

The fact remains that 1 lb of actual fat stored is 3500 calories above and beyond your bodies maintenance calories. Most people on here are eating at a deficit to begin with. So, in your case, that would be 21000 calories above what you are at maintenance or your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).

As previously stated, the scale is not a good indicator of what your body is doing regarding fat loss. The scale is good for long term trending. If you are noticing the scale going up on a regular basis over a long period of time, you may need to adjust your calories, but if it's just not moving, then there are several other factors involved which include time of day, food eaten, sodium, liquids, and so on and so on.

Also, for several people, losing weight go in "swishes," so when you think you've held onto those 6 lbs forever, all of the sudden one day you wake up, step on the scale and you've lost 4 or 6 or even 8 lbs.

Because I was "mean" and said just laugh and move on..........instead of being sarcastic like alot of folks..........I'm the bad one. its ok, I can be a douche and own it. The post is ridiculous. Plain and simple. No one will gain 10lbs in one day. NO ONE. Even water weight. Its not possible. Over the course of several days of eating the way she did, maybe I would take this as a serious post. But not after one day. If I got on the scale tomorrow and I was up 10lbs from today, my first thought would not be "omg, I gained 10lbs". Its more likely to be "hmm maybe my battery is going dead on my scale" or something like that. Stop taking everything so serious.

I do apologize if I came off rude...it's Friday, I'm in a good mood, and everyone else should be too! I just think it's easy to forget that at one point in our lives NONE of us knew anything about weight loss or nutrition. I highly doubt that the OP posted this to be ridiculous- even though you might think it is. She's putting forth an effort to learn, reaching out to others (which can be very hard!), and appreciating the feedback she's getting instead of throwing out excuses. Sounds like the right thing to do to me
  • You totally gained 10lbs. Don't believe all these other people. Starve yourself for the next three days, pray to the moon, stand on your head, drink mustard water and hope for the best.

You. Are. So full of. WIN! :flowerforyou:

I just had one of those days where I gained 10 pounds in 24 hours, but not stressed about it. I had salty foods all day and heavy beers. I'm back down 6 lbs after another 24 hours, and should be back to weight within 2 days. But yes, the spike was a little surprising.

I have to agree with everyone else.
I weighted myself yesterday and to my horror, the scale said I was 143 pounds.
This morning after peeing, I was 138. :blushing:

    Don't worry about it.

Sometimes you need a binge so you feel guilty enough to realise what your doing to yourself. Everything in moderation, like last night myself my wife and son shared a large mcdonalds fries, wouldnt eat all to myself, look at it as a learning curb and just move on and continue to diet :)
  • You CAN gain 10 pounds in a day! It's water weight. Combined with being really swollen and feeling lousy, shortness of breath or pressure on your lungs it is a serious condition. It's called congestive heart failure. Anytime you gain more than 2 pounds in a day it's water weight. I would suggest anyone gaining 10 lbs a day to set an appointment with your doctor now! And if you start feeling worse or anything go to the ER. Sometimes it can be caught before the actual heart failure and controlled with daily weighing diuretics, and other health measures.

Lemon can help if you are trying to get a little water off. I think vinegar can too.

But yeah 10 lbs in one day CAN happen. It just means something is wrong. As an EMT the drastic water gain and severe edema, I hope she got looked at. If not then...hopefully she doesn't run into major problems later
  • So it's sort of like someone saying "hey my son's lips are a bit blue" and you saying "what that's stupid! No one has blue lips! You probably just need to change a light bulb...or get a brain or something!"

When in fact, lips SHOULDN'T be blue but they still CAN be, and it means GET HELP!

OMG! This topic just made me realise the weight gain I had this morning (which I chose not to record) was caused by the sodium in the meal I ate out, not the amount of calories in that meal.

I should have remembered the sodium thing.

I even said while I was eating it "It is a little too salty, but otherwise delicious"

    :P

Also, your scale might be messed up. Mine gives me a different weight, depending on what tile it is on. I need a new one, or a new floor...
