I HATE EATING AFTER THE GYM

I burn about 1100 calories alone doing cardio, Im not sure about how many when I lift my weights and everything. I get of work around 5 pm, go to the gym for a bout 2-3 hours (I swim and do the hot tub deal) but when Im home I feel like I havent ate all day which I did. I just get irritated when I get home after the gym and eat basically dinner. I just hate it and Im ranting. lol What are the things that you eat after a work out?

Just a protein shake. I usually can't eat after a workout. So I drink it. Then I'll usually eat around 3 hours later.

Depends what I do-if I run or do any cardio, I'm never hungry for at least 2 or more hours. If it's weights, I'll be hungry as soon as I'm done so I'll either grab a protein shake before I head to the gym or a bar so I can have that as I drive home then take time to cook dinner.

3 hr workouts.... man that's a lot. I would be ravenous. I know after our 2hr speed practices I am ready to shovel down some food. I usually down a protein shake that has a little carbs to curb the body's catabolic stage and help with protein synthesis. When I get home (30-45min later) I will eat a decent meal.

    I'm confused by your post.

You don't like eating at all, or you don't like what it is that you are eating?
  • I usually eat my dinner between 9:30 - 10:30 pm... I feel no guilt about it and I eat a real real meal - rice & meat...

I can't fathom the words "hate" and "eating" when used in the same paragraph.

You have to eat after a workout so that your muscles replenish themselves. Your muscles will become depleted and damaged in the short run but will repair when you fuel them again, otherwise they will break down in order for you to refuel. Eat protein, drink milk and take fish oils to help with DOMS and reduce inflammation.

Why do you hate eating dinner after working out? I run 4 miles + do Insanity in the evenings, so I'm super crazy hungry when I get done. I have 6 meals a day (1800 calories total) and one meal is after I finish working out, usually around 10:00PM. The time of day that you eat doesn't make a difference, the total calories (if you're only worried about weight) and total macros (if you are focusing more on composition) is what makes the difference.

Do you not like eating because it's late and your appetite is suppressed, or because you don't want to "undo" your efforts?

If it's the first, try shifting your day so that your largest meal is mid-day, and then have something light when you're done - a protein shake or smoothie, hb eggs, etc.

I too find this odd...I don't do nearly as much...my strength program takes me about 30-45 minutes and I'm ravenous within an hour of leaving the gym.
  • I usually have Greek Yogurt and Banana..

This. Eat a protein snack after your workouts. Protein shake or nuts, some meat, cheese, eggs, anything really. Then you can eat dinner later.

I usually have nuts, lunch meat, boiled eggs, or cheese or a Clif bar with me so i can Nom right after I'm done working out.
I can tell the difference when I do this and when I dont.

If she took care of you too, maybe you wouldn't hate eating so much?

Drink a protein shake though :flowerforyou:
  • I feel like I put in so much work just to eat and look fat again.... I think is psycological at this point. hahaha

Healthy lifestyle is 80% nutrition. You are working way to hard at the gym. If you overdo it then it can backfire on you and you won't see the results. I eat before and after going to the gym. When I ran a marathon they were giving us chocolate milk afterwards to replenish- you might want to try that.

Had a feeling it was psychological.

Eating dinner didn't make you fat. Not exercising and eating crap is what makes you fat. When you are doing high intensity workouts like that, you need to eat afterwards. Your body needs those nutrients to repair itself. You will never get properly fit if you starve yourself after workouts. You may drop some weight, but you will not look good and you definitely won't be healthy or gain any strength. Select good prepared foods for dinner(not boxed processed junk) but good whole natural foods and eat way up, easily eat 1000 calories after a workout like you're talking about if that is really how much you're burning and you will definitely see your measurements shrink and the weight start to come off

I ate a slice of strawberry cheesecake after yesterdays workout. Mm, it was delicious. I deserved it, and it fit my calories and macros of the day :)

eta. Usually I just have a protein shake after though. Or nothing.. I workout at night, and Im usually still full from earlier.

I eat anything that fits within my macros. Yesterday it was a cinnamon roll.

But seriously? You spend 2-3 hours at the gym and an hour of that is cardio (I'm guessing because you say your burning 1100 calories) and you're surprised that you hungry when you get out?

What do you think is fueling your workouts?

Could you repeat the question? I am not sure I understand.......It sounds like you said...

I go to the gym for 2-3 hours.
then I go home and eat dinner
    I hate eating dinner
what would you suggest I eat instead?

I drink 16 ounces of water for every 20-30 minutes I spend at the gym (my workouts are 75-90 minutes); that helps me feel a little less ravenous. When I get home I eat brown rice and stir fry of some sort (last night it was zucchini, asparagus, mushrooms, and pinto beans with Sriracha satay sauce (sounds weird but it was awesome). The sauce was not normal; usually I do soy sauce.

I burn about the same amount of cals daily doing cardio as you. I'm starving when I get home and resort back to caveman mentality. Give me a big friggin steak or something. No, I don't always eat that, but that is what I want. Think devouring food..... I probably grunt also. lol

AS other have said, I don't really get what you're getting at. Your body needs food, so feed it!

That's a scary way to think and very similar to the thinking of someone with an eating disorder. Eating when you're hungry is NOT what caused you to become overweight in the first place. You feel hungry after a workout because your body needs fuel - fuel it!
  • Because I like think Im over it eating because with the things that are cooked for dinner I have to ball park the calories if they are not listed, which makes me think that Im not eating enough, or over doing it. I try to save about 500 calories for when I get home after the gym just in case, But we all know how easy it is to go over that about. I try to just eat like a orange or something but it never pans out. lol Idk at this point I think its a mental thing, I would just hate to have burned 1100 or so calories just to eat up 800, including the 500 or so that I saved for dinner. I over think alot you guys so excuse me. lol
