Curious a question for the gals?

So when I was a teenager (many many years ago). I use to get really bad cramps during my time of the month and heavy periods. I got heavier and those cramps did go away and the periods got lighter. Now I am back down to the same weight I was as a teenager (I was a heavy teenager) and the cramps are back and so is the heaviness. I read somewhere that the more exercise you do lightens the flow, and shortens the amount of the time you have it and lessons the cramps. Now even though the cramps nearly kill me I still exercise during them (as much as I really don't want to), but this little rumor does give me the push I need to well work through the pain.
I am curious if anyone else has hear of this; or exercised things getting better during that time. Better as in less cramps, lighter flow or even shorter time length......
