I love that video! It's really true for people in general, not just women. Men can also be really down on themselves as well. Here is a picture that I really like along the same lines:

I guess this is where we're at right now. Crawl before we walk. It would be nice if society would stop focusing so heavily on women's appearances at all. Our image is used to sell everything. And we know it. When we're little girls, we must be pretty ones. As we get older, we must be feminine, beautiful. It's so commonplace to watch commercials or see ads telling us that we can be making ourselves look better, that we don't even notice it anymore.

As someone with actual healthy self-esteem, I can tell you that it starts in childhood. I was always valued and praised for my actions and capabilities. My looks were never mentioned. It wasn't until I became an adolescent that I realized my appearance mattered.

HMMMMM gave me a lot of thought right now. I'm looking at 3 advertisements right now and on two of them is the image of a woman.

I was praised and ridiculed for my features, and to this day when I look in the mirror I see a monster. Nice thoughtful post.

I totally agree with this. The first half of my life was spent with the message that I'm ugly and worthless being pounded into my head. All the positive messages in the world can't erase those earlier messages. I can see stuff like this, believe in my head that it is true, act as if it is true, preach to other women that it is true. I don't think I'll ever *feel* that it's true.
Either way, I choose to be ruled by my head rather than my emotions.
