Getting my dog to hawaii safely! Has anyone else had to do this and how was your experiance?

    I haven't, but I wish you and your dog the best of luck. I can see why you would be stressed, but I imagine everything will work out alright. Is your dog flying with you, or are you taking some other type of transportation?

    We are flying but there are hoops you gotta jump through to get the pets into Hawaii, and honestly my husbands NCOs are no help what-so-ever they wont tell us anything and its all fallen on my shoulders! I am freaking out!

    OK..
    When I ETS'd from Germany, I had to go thru the same thing with my dog.
    It is not as bad as you might think. The Kennels are not that bad at all and they really do care about the animals.
    The flight from Alaska to Hawaii is not a horrible flight. If needed, your dog can be sedated for the flight.
    When is your PCS?

    We took our 2 cats to Germany and back with the military, but we didn't have quarantines or anything like Hawaii. I know there's plenty of info available online, though, because I had a friend ship a dog to Hawaii. As long as you know the rules and cover all your bases you should be fine.

    I haven't done that. Is it a big or little dog. I wonder if they will let you bring a tiny carrier as your "Carry On". If I was flying, and wanting to take my girls, and allowed a carry on, It would be a pet carrier, and not a little bag with other things in it. I would want my dog with me, next to me. I don't know if they allow that. I'm really not a flyer. Last time was when I was 10 years old. Research as much as you can. Sounds like your trying to. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

    Not going to the island but leaving it you can she is a pomeranian so very danty I have never had to do any of this before

    When I went to Africa someone had a dog on the plane. I would assume a domestic flight would be better than an international one.

    We flew our puppy on a plane. To this day she is frightened by vacuums or anything noisy. She's also very jumpy in general. We don't know if its from the flight, but we won't be flying pets anymore.

    You have so many more resources then I did (god, I feel old... damn kids and their rock and roll music)
    Anyway, I would strongly advise you go to

    Your husband is going to be busy with his outprocessing crap and, as a young Soldier, it can be intimidating.
    You can pick up a lot of the slack by making some phone calls to the resources in Hawaii.
    The folks on the other end of the line know EXACTLY what you are dealing with and really will be helpful.
    Find out about housing.
    See if there is a waiting list.

    When you are about 15 days out, have your huisband contact the S-3 for the unit on his orders.
    Have him try to find out who his NCO will be and see if he can email his NCO and at least make an introduction.
    Most NCO's will meet y'all at the airport and at least escort you to the post and even the hotel until you get housing squared away.
    Moving can be stressful on both of you. I have been in his shoes (well, boots) and it is difficult to try to make sure everything is taken care of.
