I'm kicking a Mountain Dew habit. Back when I was still in the throes of my addiction and not wanting to drink every Mountain Dew on the planet, I would grab some citrus juice. It was sweet, tangy, and similar enough to Mountain Dew to make me feel better, but a lot healthier for me.

I also drink milk; I really need it because I'm nursing a child.

Everyone cries about aspartame, but there are others: sucrose, acesulfame, neotame ect.

DIet soda, Crystal light, regular tea, powerade/gatorade
  • I like the herbal teas, hot or cold, also, iced coffee in the afternoons. For the most part, I drink lots of water with slices of lemon, lime or any other fruit. Cucumbers and mint are good, too.

It's easier to list the things I don't drink. I don't drink any sodas or colas (regular or diet) except for club soda. I don't drink energy drinks. I don't drink juices or ades. I only rarely drink tonic water, but very rarely. I don't drink poisons (arsenic, hemlock, etc.). I don't drink spoiled things (milk, nasty wine, skunky beer, etc.)

Otherwise, if it is something designed to be consumed as a beverage, I would probably drink it.

Edited because I forgot an "if."

If it's not water, then it's coffee, wine or Vitamin Water Zero. Sometimes Coke Zero or beer. I do add Propel Zero powder or Arizona Iced Tea powder to my water to make it more interesting. Honestly, I don't know what kind of sweetener is in them, but I like them.

Generally I drink water with mio, I also intermittently have 1% milk, juice(sometimes diluted with water), diet root beer, coffee if I need caffeine, and chamomile mint or lemon tea. And the occasional alcohol but that one doesn't hydrate.

I also make veg-noodle soup for dinner at least once a week, which I generally count as adding a cup of water. If you're just looking for hydration, fresh fruit and soups can be a pretty good addition.

    beer & wine!

O - you said to stay hydrated!

I drink seltser water/club soda (spelling)
and green tea or jasmine tea.

I feel like the tea dehydrates me a little but not like coffee or sodas do.
  • I drink selter water. It's fizzy like soda but isn't sweet and full of stuff you don't want.

I like the odd tea here or there but most of the time it's just water. Very very occasionally I'll have a Coke Zero but I want to stay away from aspartame as well.

I'm currently kicking a soda habit so I've had to find other things too. Mostly I'm drinking water but I found this cold brew green tea with mint from Twinnings (I think that's the name of the company) and it's delicious, so if I'm craving some flavor I put a bag of it in my water.

After a hearty yet healthy breakfast that includes a lot of coffee (black with nothing added) to get me started for the day i just pretty much simply drink water for hydration. Haven't had even a DIET soda in a few months.

Flavored teas....you might find one you like, you just have to play around. Try experimenting with red, white and green teas. And I sweeten with stevia.

I also like Mio or generic Mio.

Google fruit water for some awesome recipes.

I also like liquid stevia with a slice of lemon.

I use a ton of the zero cal water flavors (mio, crystal light ect)
  • I truly stick to water - except for when I drink of course! Then it's beer or wine. I used to drink coffee but I cut that out. I never drink soda - it's so bad for you and not worth it.

Occasionally, I will have a hot chocolate in the morning at work if I am freezing.

Eight glasses of water a day an urban myth'?

Water and a well-balanced diet 'do far more than water alone,' Australian researcher says

The common advice to drink eight glasses of water a day doesn't hold water, say nutrition and kidney specialists who want to dispel the myth.

"What drove us to drink two litres of water a day?" asks an editorial in this week's issue of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health.

The recommendation was driven by vested interests rather than health, suggests author Speros Tsindos of the department of dietetics and human nutrition at La Trobe University in Victoria, Australia.
Other beverages also help us meet the body's fluid needs, say nutrition specialists. (Aaron Harris/Canadian Press)
"Humans need to maintain fluid balance and need to drink water when required, but should also consider fluid in unprocessed fruits and vegetables and juices. There is further evidence that water and a well-balanced diet does far more than water alone," Tsindos wrote.

"Water is important for health; however, the recommendation of eight glasses of pure water per day appears an overestimation of requirements."

Even a baked potato is 75 per cent water, said nutrition Prof. Susan Barr of the University of British Columbia, who sat on a Canadian-U.S. committee that looked at fluid intake.

"There's nothing magical about water from a glass of water as opposed to water from a food or any other beverage," Barr said.

Drinking caffeinated beverages such as tea and coffee do not lead to dehydration, said Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, a nephrologist at the University of Pennsylvania who reviewed research claims on drinking eight glasses of water and studied how the kidneys handle it.

    Let thirst guide you

"Drinking the coffee will count towards your total water intake for the day," Goldfarb said.

Goldfarb said despite the common idea that it's important to "drink eight glasses of eight ounces of water" a day, "There’s no evidence that benefits health in any real way and it really represents an urban myth."

There's no evidence you need to drink more water than what thirst dictates, Goldfarb added.

Studies on desert nomads showed people can consume minimal amounts of water in harsh environments. The military has also looked at how much water soldiers need to take with them when patrolling in hot climates without harming their performance.

"If one is just playing a game of tennis in an indoor facility, for example, or having a short run on a treadmill in an air-conditioned gym, the need to maintain hydration during that is just non-existent," Goldfarb advised.

People have died of dehydration and from drinking too much water too quickly.

A good guide to tell if the body’s finely tuned fluid balance is to check the colour of your urine. If it's very dark, you're on the dry side; if it's very light or translucent, then you need to drink a bit less water, said Dr. David Price, head of family medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont.

You can drink too much water, but 8 glasses isn't going to be too much. I sometimes drink less and sometimes I drink more. I let my thirst dictate that.

I drink tea and coffee some days more than others. No sodas, I sometimes drink juice, but most of the time I prefer to get my fruit in the whole fruit concept.

If water isn't something you want to drink do mix it with a little juice or just lime or lemon. Another refreshing think I like is to crush a little mint in the bottom of a glass squeeze a little lime over that and add ice and water. Very refreshing.
