I think that some people's minds just move way faster than their hands. If the context is brilliant then I don't judge the spelling too harshly...but some people seem very...um...limited...by what they put out into the world (when even the simplest words are wrong).

Agreed, I tend to leave out words because my mind is going too fast. It has nothing to with my intelligence.

I could care less what people when people make spelling mistakes. Life is too short to dwell on the negative OP.

How much less could you care? (I'll use your answer to determine how much you currently care.)

You go nuts and believe in doing things right all you want.

However, you shouldn't push your beliefs onto other people.

Pity that the scale didn't go down when people lost ignorance, it would be a great encouragement for people to open their minds and their hearts to other people's thoughts and perspectives.

Not everyone can spell well, so freaking what!! Not a single person who has issues (or even laziness) in their spelling deserves to be made to feel bad on a SUPPORT site! Like someone else said, there are like 100 entries for most foods, so bypass the misspelled ones if you must, but as far as *I* am concerned, as long as the nutritional information is right, I could care less HOW accurate the spelling of the food name. If there is only one entry, and it's misspelled, feel free to input a new entry for the same food.

Frankly, I am just happy that in my busy day, I don't have to worry about inputting every little thing into the system, spelled correctly or not, it's there for me and that saves me time. If you are this concerned about spelling errors on MPL then maybe it's time for a hobby!

You couldn't care less. If you 'could care less' that implies that it is possible for you to care less than you do which means you do care.
In addition in case you hadn't guessed I am a grammar pedant and a language enthusiast and spelling DOES matter. It is one of the building blocks of language and people certainly ought to be encouraged to spell properly.

    How so?

There are anywhere between 5,000 and 7,000 languages spoken on this planet. The vast majority of them are not written, yet people somehow get by. The number of times that writing systems have been invented independently is miniscule in proportion to the number of languages out there. The alphabet has only been invented once (in the Mesopotamian region; Greeks then borrowed the Phoenician consonantal alphabet and transformed into the vowel-and-consonant system that English uses today). There is nothing natural or essential about writing.

Dyslexia is also not correlated with tests of non-verbal intelligence; there is a fairly minor disruption of phonological processing that is responsible for some people's difficulties with spelling. Not to mention that the English spelling system is extremely conservative and preserves aspects of pronunciation that have not been current for hundreds of years. It's really no wonder people have trouble with it. I will not bore you with lists of highly proficient scientists and public figures who have been diagnosed with dyslexia.

But I do enjoy people getting their panties in a bunch about spelling, so please carry on!

To all the brits complaining that American English is wrong, and theirs is the "correct english"

    Let's see ...

    62.5 Million In Great Britan
    314 Million in the USA.

Guess what? It's not your language any more.

Not taking sides or anything, but there are other english speaking countries: Ireland, Australia, New Zealand etc.

Go and search the database for "brain". Seriously. You will find "all brain, raisin brain".

Let me see, I care about the environment, the economy, my family, my kids, how I am going to pay my student loans, the people in Texas who lost their lives in the explosion, gay marriage, gun control, my family's budget, my kids future, my health, my husband's health, and when I am going to get laid next, and honestly I see no where on that list the spelling on MFP.

If the spelling of a database food item is incorrect, i.e. not accurate, how can I be assured of the accuracy of the nutritional information?

Nobody made any comment about dyslexia or correlation between dyslexia and intelligence or lack thereof. Anyone worth their salt has seen the often reproduced list of 'scientists and public figures' who have dyslexia so there's really no need to peddle that old chestnut here.

By checking it against a credible source such as the USDA database.

Just so we can all see this awesome dancing bananafana fo fanna again....
  • Hi, there is nothing worse than trying to look up a food item and you can't find what you want because the name of the food is spelled incorrectly. For example..it's banana...NOT bananna...
Please double check your spelling before you submit a food entry.. Thank you in advance.:flowerforyou:
I haven't read all the responses in this thread and am not sure if you've been told this yet or not: you can edit the food entries in the database and correct them yourself. I didn't know this myself for a long time until someone told me.

    I was thinking this, too.

Oh my, thank you all for jumping down my throat! Can we be any more rude?
Sorry I even tried to be nice!

I wouldn't take it personally, a lot of members here like an excuse to make their opinions heard and have a bit of 'friendly' banter.

That being said, if you are going to post a thread knocking people for their spelling mistakes, then please make sure your own message is free of mistakes, because then you are pretty much asking for it!

I LIKE the fact that there are these mistakes; nobody is perfect, none of us here is perfect, and that is one of the reasons we are here. Weight loss is hard enough, let's not make it harder by getting petty about spelling. Laugh at the mistakes, acknowledge we are all only human, and make the most out of the support and the great resources on this site :)

Jess, you are a fox inside as well as out.

And you are my new favourite person :flowerforyou:

If I spell correctly will I loose weight?

OMG OMG OMG OMG this makes me want to freaking murder people!! I have nooooo idea how soooooo many adults cannot spell LOSE.

Loose is what you want your pants to be, and you have to LOSE weight to make that happen.

I might be wrong but I think they spelled it that way on purpose to make a point.

    Yeah, I was agreeing.
