I often read that to find out if people are male or female if I'm unsure not that it changes the fact I'll take them on as a friend but just for interest sake mostly.

I don't believe that they are telling the truth when they say that. I think that they must have an inferiority complex if they feel that they can't connect with someone who has the common goal and interest of losing weight, and/or getting fit, on a fitness website for all genders, just because they are male. Even poorer form to delete people off for that reason.

If I add someone, it is just to share the common journey on MFP.m I'm sure you're the same!

I tend to do the opposite, as in I assume that the picture is the person, so if I see a man in a profile pic, I assume that they are a man.

Yes I know if others applied that logic to my profile they'd think I was a neanderthal.

I don't bother sending FRs to people whose profiles are set to private. I want to at least know a bit about a person before I send a FR, in the same way that that person would want to know a bit about me before adding me. I've sent a few FRs to people with private profiles, but only after I read something they posted on a forum that I identified with or found inspiring. Some have added me while some have ignored my FR, which is okay! Other than that, I just don't bother. I keep an open profile so that people can look at it and at least know a bit about me before sending me a FR or accepting a FR from me.

i had a funny one this week too.
someone sent me a request, which i accepted. he then sent me a message telling me to un-private my diary so that he could ''support'' me. when i declined to follow orders, pointing out that ''support'' isn't required, especially as i'm not aiming to change weight, he replied that he would delete me as he only wants friends who interract.

i laughed so hard i almost peed!
