    Not true. Weight varies from one planet (or gravitation field} to the next. Mass is constant and does not change.

    Mass in the contect of volume but not density... thats a seperate subject. for example, a balloon filled with air is going to fall at a slower rate that a rock of the same size and volume because of density!

    Density = Mass/Volume

    In the vacuum of space, I weigh nothing.

    Oh, and no one can hear me scream.

    I'm hopping on the next virgin airlines galaxy flight and moving to space!!! who's with me?

    What I meant was the mass of a single object is constant. Density is simply mass divided by volume, which clearly can change.

    Mass is something physicists are still trying to understand.

    Matter is anything that has mass and takes up shape.

    Mass has no formula. It is a basic building block.

    However because mass is a building block its used in many important equations such as density.

    Newton 2nd Law describes Force
    as the product of mass and acceleration

    F = ma

    If we use the acceleration due to Earth's gravity ( g) we have weight.

    W = mg

    Einstein also uses mass in the most famous formula
    E = m c ²

    Here mass is relates Kinetic Energy ( the energy of motion) to velocity.

    Kinetic Energy is written as
    KE = 1/2 m v²

    Which says that a object with mass has a Kinetic Energy which is exponentially related to its velocity.

    E = m c ² Is that relationship as the object approaches the speed of light, which is the constant, c in physics.

    To give you an idea how fast that is...
    c = 3.00 x 10 ^ 8 m / s

    or 186,000 mi / s

    Ok, I'll give you that. Observable mass can change depending on the relative motion of inertial frames between the observer and the subject.

    You are not the wisest of posters here.

    1kg of fat = 1kg of muscle

    in other words, a balancing scale will balance and not tip one way or the other.

    ps - it is "weighs"

    I fell in love with physics years ago. /sigh that I don't use it in my job anymore. Thank you MPF for letting me relive my glory days.
