For heaven's sake...Please stop saying muscle weighs more than fat!!
Sorry for this stupid vent.... been hearing it everywhere..on here - on facebook - face to face etc.
Muscle takes up less space than fat however one pound of fat and one pound of muscle both weigh...ONE pound!!! LOL
This is why it is important to measure yourself! If your scale is not being nice...measure measure measure!!
My vent for the day!

LOL! That's so true haha, people say it to me, but I brush it off.
But you are so right!!! Haha, I need to start measuring myself come to think of it0 -
The space difference is grossly overstated as well. Both are mostly water. Muscle is slightly more dense than water. Fat is slightly less dense than water.
A given volume of water is a pretty good approximation of what each looks like. 8 lbs of fat or muscle is about the size of a gallon of water. A pound of each is about the size of a pint.0 -
Oh? This again?0

Muscle does weigh more than fat. Rocks weigh more than feathers. Steel weighs more than paper.0

Most people know that.
When people say muscle weighs more than fat, they are most of the time
Talking about density/volume.
A square foot of muscle weighs more than a square foot of fat,so
Technically yea it does weigh more0 -
There are tons of threads about this. I don't know why people seem to think they need to keep posting this.
When people say muscle weighs more than fat they mean that it weighs more for the same size. No one means that the same weight of muscle and fat weigh differently.0 -

^ Thanks, This pretty much sums it up.
Now, next discussion, Why do people think they are loosing fat rather than losing it? I rather lose fat than have loose fat.0 -

This. The unspoken part is not "a pound of..." is "one cubic inch/foot", making the full sentence "A cubic inch of muscle weighs more than a cubic inch of fat," which is, in fact, true.0 -
OBVIOUSLY, when people say "muscle weighs more than fat", they mean and understand and assume that others understand that they are referring to the same volume of fat/muscle. It's a given.
I think the thing that too many people do NOT understand is that it take way more time and lots of work to build muscle, so when someone shows a gain or weight stalls and someone tells them maybe they are "gaining muscle", that is often wishful thinking.0 -

Ok so in 4 weeks of going to the gym 3 times a week i have managed to lose 1st1lb in fat and gain 8lb of muscle. 4 inches off hips, 4 inches off waist, 4 inches off *kitten* and and inch from each thigh weight loss of 10lb. So you can't build muscle on 1200 calories... Rubbish! I did it!!!0

QFT. Everyone annoyed when people say that muscle weighs more than fat need to get over it. Most people are referring to the fact that you can weigh the same but actually be a smaller size because you are leaner i.e. less fat more muscle. It's not rocket science and just because they don't feel the need to go into a long explanation of it doesn't mean they aren't right. Geez. :ohwell:0 -

Loose fat is much easier to get rid of. Tight fat sticks to your body more.0 -
Somewhat sadly, while I am losing fat, I still have a lot of loose fat as well0

how can you say muscle takes up less space than fat....1 square centimeter of fat takes up the same space as 1 square centimeter of muscle!!
think my statement sounds idiotic?
why don't you post your pic of plastic muscles and fat to prove your ridiculous point?0 -

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but no you didn't. You didn't gain 8lbs of muscle in 4 weeks. Not in 4 weeks, not on 1200 calories, not as a female, not working out 3x a week. Whatever system of measurement you're using isn't accurate.0 -

THIS ^^^^^^^^^ First thing someone says when a person stalls or gains "you gained muscle this week, it weighs more than fat" ?!?!?
to the others ~ there are a ton of posts on same subjects...this was my vent post. The other posts were others vents.0 -
Technically, mass = density x volume and weight = mass x gravity, so weight = density x volume x gravity. Since you would keep volume and gravity constant, the more dense muscle would mean more weight. If you are making volume not a constant, then you can pretty much call it anything you want. For examples, fat weighs more than muscle (if you have 10 liters of fat and 1 liter of muscle)...0

Muscle does weigh more than fat. Rocks weigh more than feathers. Steel weighs more than paper.
A pound is a pound. In a way, you are right - 1 rock weighs more then 1 feather, but a pound of feathers weighs the same as a pound of rocks. You might only need 1 rock that weighs 1 lb, I have no idea how many feathers you would need to equal 1 lb - a lot I would assume.0 -

Nope, wrong. It's a physics thing. We're talking mass and volume, not weight.
1 pound of feathers = 1 pound of rocks. However, the volume of feathers will be far greater to equal that same pound.
My dork moment of the day!
BUT....when people say that "Muscle weighs more than fat" on here - they are saying that a toned, muscular and fit 140 pounds looks smaller and tighter than a floppy blubbery 140 pounds of fat, because it is.
People can be so fussy.0 -

Is this why rock beats scissors and if so, how does that make paper beat rock?0 -

so lead weighs the same as a feathers?
buildings weigh the same as cars?
human babies weigh the same as horses?
or does volume matter? a person would have to be particularly dense not to realize that people are comparing volume0 -

This!! People need to relax. Its a saying. People dont honestly believe that 1 pound of muscle weighs more than 1 pound of fat. They mean that a cup of muscle weighs more than a cup of fat. From a scientific standpoint, the saying makes perfect sense as long as you are comparing like volumes. People like to get bent out of shape for the smallest things, especially when both sides can be true.0 -

Unlikely. You just "unearthed" the existing muscle you had from the layer of adipose tissue that was on top of it.0 -

I guess all the people in the world weigh exactly the same too. I mean, a pound for you is exactly the same as a pound for me.0 -

Do dense people weigh more than more fluffy people?0
