    Alright... I always get sucked into these threads. That expression assumes that the volume of muscle is equal to the volume of fat. In such cases, muscle does weight more than fat by volume.

    You're right that everyone's been hearing this stupid vent everywhere. The search feature would show you the heavy smattering of threads that were started to say the exact same thing as you just did. I'm not sure why new threads are always started for it. You'd think that people would want to commiserate with others who have the exact same misunderstanding of what people are saying.

    It's a matter of how you look at things. Yes, one pound of muscle is equal to one pound of fat, but one square inch of muscle weighs more than one square inch of fat.

    I believe when people say that, they mean that two same sized chunks, one each of fat and muscle will weigh differently. If you get two 6" cubed portions, the fat will not weigh as much as the muscle. While a pound is a pound no matter what, they can be equal in mass but not weight.

    For the sake of argument, when comparing two masses against each other for weight value, you use the same mass. This is basic science for comparison. So if the same amount of mass was used for both muscle and fat, then muscle does weigh more than fat.

    That said, people on here are referring to a pound vs a pound when it comes to weight loss. A pound of anything will equal a pound of anything, but their masses will differ.

    Ok so in 4 weeks of going to the gym 3 times a week i have managed to lose 1st1lb in fat and gain 8lb of muscle. 4 inches off hips, 4 inches off waist, 4 inches off *kitten* and and inch from each thigh weight loss of 10lb. So you can't build muscle on 1200 calories... Rubbish! I did it!!!

    Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but no you didn't. You didn't gain 8lbs of muscle in 4 weeks. Not in 4 weeks, not on 1200 calories, not as a female, not working out 3x a week. Whatever system of measurement you're using isn't accurate.

    The gym has not been my only form of working out. I have been hitting it very hard, However i have had my 4 week results confirmed by My GP and the gym both today so yeah i have done it.

    I'm sure you've been working your *kitten* off and it sounds like you've got some great results. You should be very proud of what you've done for yourself. Please know that I am not for one minute trying to discredit your success

    But you didn't gain 8lbs of muscle.

    If your GP and gym are telling you that you should look into replacing them.

    i'm glad you're doing well and i'm glad you're working to maintain your lean mass while losing, that is AWESOME!

    but it is not physically possible for a human being to gain 8lbs of muscle in a month - even on an extreme surpluss, even for a professional athlete, even for a man.

    if your doctor is telling you otherwise, you need a new doctor!

    Well no. Unless you dexa scanned and did it again 4 weeks later to show an 8lbs gain of muscle (that's 2lbs of muscle a week), then what you've experience is common when starting or returning to exercise. Water and glycogen gain. And that's not muscle.

    Flaw in your argument, Muscle and fat actually take up the same amount of space. 1 cubic cm of fat and one cubic cm of muscel have the same volume. I think you want to say that muscle is more dense than fat, or that fat has a higher specific volume than muscle. If we are going to vent about technically incorrect statements, let's be technically correct.

    Found this on the internet so it has to be true... actually its pretty smart on muscle gaining ...

    and if i knew how to post a damn picture i found a cool picture of plastic fat and muscle and the VOLUME difference in both.

    That picture is a load of crap though.

    Way, way, way over dramatized.

    Both are mostly water and have a density fairly close to water. The volume of water is a decent approximation for both.

    Weight is a function of gravity, which is constant. If the mass is the same, then weight is also the same.

    This...while you have probably had some minor gains...what you are experiencing is volumization More nutrients/water being retained in the muscles. It's a good thing.

    Well then they are either lying to you or you've misconstrued actual results. Or you're a special snowflake. Realize that the greatest athletes in the world with a perfect regimen and nutrition would have a VERY DIFFICULT time putting on 8lbs of lean muscle in a month. Pro body builders live and eat just to gain muscle and this doesn't happen with them.

    OMG i cant with this post....obviously two things that are both 1 pound....weigh one pound!!! As someone said before steel weighs more than feathers. LMAO....muscle is more dense than fat taking up less space. Muscle does way more than fat though...if you take say a cubic inch as everyone is saying..the cubic inch of muscle will weigh more than a cubic inch of fat. Also, im 5 foot 11 and i weight 170 pounds but i am pretty much solid muscle and have been an athlete all my life..theres people who are my same height..just as thin..but they dont lift or build muscle or anything and they weight roughly 150 or so...Muscle does weight more than fat my loves! But screw the scale and get to lifting!

    Really? So something on Earth weigh's the same on the moon? Because gravity of both is quite different. Mass is constant. Mass is the same on Earth as it is on the moon. Gravity isn't constant.
    And you can't tell me that a cubic foot of muscle doesn't weigh more than cubic foot of fat. Well you can, but that would be inaccurate.

    No it hasn't, it just isn't possible. You have made your existing muslce larger, and it also has a lot more water in it since you are actually working out, but you haven't put on two pounds of muscle a week for 4 weeks. Also if you only lost 1lbs of fat, and put on 8lbs of muscle you wouldn't have lost that many inches, muscle isn't that much smaller than fat.
