Motivation!!!

I have a BIG and I mean big lack of motivation.....any tips on how to get motivated for a fat lazy person?

People say you need to want to do it otherwise there is no point. Problem is I REALLY want to do it. I have to do it for health reasons...I just don't have it in me. Brain says no; stomach says yes. Stomach always wins...why?

I don't want to join a gym as I have no where near enough confidence even with everybody saying I should and not to worry about confidence..i do.

So I am walking more and will be using my exercise bike more in the future but its the food....im addicted to food and would welcome any tips.

I hope someone understands where I am coming from and can help :D

I look forward to your replies.

Hi, i wont do the gym either... Even when i was young and a size ten i just found it to intimidating... Its how u feel inside! I have been walking lots, i had a friend who lost 2 stone just by getting off the bus 2 stops early so i believe in walking :) as for the eating... If u really really cant get a grip on it give slimming world a try.... U can eat and eat on that plan and still lose weight. Good luck!

    worked for me.

seriously, the question is, do you want it, or do you enjoy eating all you want, more?

You want motivation then here it is.

The more you work out the more you can eat. If you are working out enough then you don't really have to worry to much about food. Yes you will want to eat cleaner but one thing at a time. You say you can't get over the reduced food....then just excercise more so you can eat more. Do strength training.....no matter what.

As time goes on you will begin to actuelly enjoy eating a bit less and/or more healthy. Baby steps.

At the moment, it sounds like you value eating more than you value the possibility of being healthy. You need to change that, if YOU want to. Nobody can tell you how to be motivated, you need to work it out by yourself.

For me, hypnotherapy was the answer. I'd been unable to lose weight for years, just wasn't motivated enough I guess, then I weighed myself January this year (having avoided weighing for years) and couldn't believe how much I was. I realised from a health point of view I had to take action, sooner rather than later, considered a gastric band, which through a circuitous route led me to hypnotherapy, made an appointment and started losing weight, so far 39 lbs in just over three months. If anything I'm anti-gym, they are full, in my opinion, of fit, healthy, young people who are THIN. I'd love to go swimming but the general public is not ready for the sight of my semi naked bloated body, but I'll get there eventually. In the meantime I walk more. I'm working my way backwards through my wardrobe (I'm a hoarder and don't throw stuff out!), now wearing trousers I haven't been able to wear for about three or four years, and just feel so much better. My diet has become much healthier, I get enough to eat and don't feel hungry or need to snack between meals, so it has turned my life right around. If you're struggling, hypnotherapy might be worth a try, it's worked for me.

I think maybe your all right....I want to eat what I like over diet. I mean I did eat right for 5 weeks I only lost 9lbs then but that's a big deal for me. Then gave up...why? I have no idea I guess I got bored. I do like junk food too much and seriously driving a van around towns for a living with all the Mccy D's, burger kings and KFC's around its really hard not to be tempted.

Thank you everyone for your comments....I like the fact they are not just "cut the crap out" "stop eating s**t" it means a lot to me...

Just be addicted to good food :)
Keep a supply of raw chopped vegetables in the fridge that you can have with a bit of salsa.
Put half a lemon in your water for nice flavour without calories.
Eat lots over the day, but keep individual portions smaller and eat them slowly.
You can eat ALOT of food and still lose weight if you make healthy choices.

Food connects with a lot of emotions for some of us. It's not just as simple as stop eating ****. I eat when i'm stressed, I comfort eat. I have been on here for nearly a year and I am STILL fighting my binge tendencies.

It's just been a case of one day at time for me. I've had periods of really crappy eating and periods of not so crappy eating. When I say crappy eating I mean eating for the sake of it, when I was hungry and didn't need to eat. The food type was regardless, I was still eating when it was unneeded.

Don't over think it. Long term probably won't be your friend. Just get through one day with trying to make better choices, then try and do the same the next day. You will have day days everyone does. But if you quit (or don't get started even lol) then every day there on will be a bad day.

Now I'm a total gym addict, but 3 years ago when I started losing weight there would have been no way I would have gone in. I had been a member of gyms before and had stopped going after I had had panic attacks.
I joined Slimming World, which worked for me, I lost 3 stone in 5 months. I stayed for group every week, and tried really hard to stick to it. I tried to be totally avoid syns I didn't need, eg premade sauces, and still have some things I really liked, eg chocolate, wine! To try and start some exercise we got the EA active for the Wii and I would exercise at home with curtains firmly closed. Slowly as I lost more weight, I got a bit more confident but the first few times I jogged outside, I did it away from home so I didn't pass people I knew! Try planning what else you can take out in your van for munchies, and good luck!

You may not be as unmotivated as you think. It takes motivation to ask for help. :)
  • Stand in front of a mirror, get close to it and stare yourself in the eyes, Anwser the question, What do I really want? Take your time and be honest with yourself. If the anwser is to get healthy and lose weight, spend as much time as possible reading and researching nutrition, exercise, and how it applies to your current health level. Getting armed with knowledge is step 1.

One of my favorite quotes goes something like this:

Change only occures when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing.

For some people, this never happens.

you don't have to go to the gym to workout!!! do you like to watch TV???? if that is the case you can do what I do when I have lack of motivation.... I put a good tv show on... open my laptop and put it in silent and do any fitness blender workout (they have all kind of workout: to tone, abs, low impact, high impact... some last 10 minutes, some up to an hour, but most of them are for 30 minutes) .... their workouts are free and you can find them on youtube.... the good thing about them, is that they show you the move and you repeat it for 30 seconds or something like that, so you do your workout and you don't miss your favorite show......

then, when Im done with my workout I get my reward.. some chocolate milk smoothie (I love the advantadge carb control shake) and I have it with any protein bar or snack I feel like having....

That could be a good start for right now..... later on, you will see that you will get use to working out, that your body is going to ask you for more and more intensity

without meaning to be harsh.... ^^^ this is the whole truth of the matter.
You don't need to go to the gym, you can set up your house with the things you need.
You've got health reasons, but sometimes that doesn't actually motivate....
find an eating plan on the web, as much unprocessed food as you can, low sugar, low carb, and clear out your fridge and pantry of everything.
    Start fresh....
really truly this is do - able, you just have to want it more than you want to stay the way you are.
Its not about continually picturing the end result, its more to do with what you do right now this minute, theres the saying that tomorrow never comes... its true.
The only thing any of us can control is right now.....
I'm here to support you if you want my help or a kick up the bum

You're welcome to look at my food diary. I think it's public. Let me know if you can't see it.

I don't belong to a gym. I am walking everywhere for errands and to work, plus I walk everyday to a specific landmark and then back home. As far as food goes, I am a Junk Food Queen, so I've cut all that out. I don't know what kind of food you eat... my diet base is brown rice and lentils with veggies thrown in. The big point is I am never hungry and losing several pounds a week. Your motivation will increase when you start losing weight and start feeling fantastic from the exercise and better food. I used to be exhausted all the time and with a few changes my energy is sky high.

oh no no no...this is such a misconception. Whatever you do, do not believe this. As long as you're hitting your carb/protein/fat amounts it doesn't matter how many calories you eat and how much exercise you're doing. Yes exercise is great... but I barely do any cardio and I just eat my daily macros..

I wish people wouldn't give out advice like that..I'm so sorry.

Um......what? Yes, it does matter. Gavin, it really is as simple as calories in vs. calories burned. When you are just getting started don't worry about all the other stuff, create a healthy calorie deficit and you will begin to lose. As time goes you will read more and learn more. You will want to make better choices, but for now it's calories, and the more you move the more calories you burn, the more calories you burn, the more calories you can take in and maintain a HEALTHY deficit. Now, for some practical advice. I think you need to meal plan. Plan out your entire day, that makes it a little harder to binge.

Um...actually... as long as your eating your daily macros you are fine. Yes I am speaking of IIFYM...it works. Exercise is important, however maintaining your protein/carb/fat intake is important too...not so much calories. Yes he needs to create a healthy calorie deficient and yes I believe in "calories in calories out"

Its all a numbers game..you just have to figure out what works for you.

WOW......WRONG. Calories are first and foremost. Everything else is important to overall health, but nothing trumps overall caloric intake when it comes to weight loss. (unless there is a medical condition)

He is a beginner and needs to focus on his overall caloric intake before anything else. The rest will come.

My suggestion is this. Start with the food part of it first. Make baby step improvements, for example, decide to cut your soda intake from 4 cans/day to 1/day (just an example). Take your time, and be kind with yourself. Expect to fail sometimes, but keep trying over and over. Later, add some exercise. You don't have to train like an Olympic athlete to be fit. Again, baby steps. Take it slow, but keep progressing. Again, expect that sometimes you may fail or fall short of your goals, but keep going. Set small goals that are reasonable.

I think sometimes it's hard to feel motivated because it just feels like it is so overwhelming and/or that it's just not worth the effort. Make up your mind that you CAN do it and it IS so worth it. Good luck to you!

Agreed. When you are very overweight like the OP is he just needs to concentrate on getting his calories right and reduce his weight first and foremost. The last thing he needs when he's feeling a bit overwhelmed is too complicate matters worrying about his macro's. That will come with time. He has a long journey ahead and he needs to keep it simple at the present time IMO.

    Sorry to ramble here!
OK everyone, send him a friend request. He needs a big support system to rally him to the finish line.

Say goodbye to the OLD you. You will feel so much younger from losing weight. For me there was a first hurdle, the first couple days that were hard. After that it got a lot easier. My body had to adjust. I was a serious sugar addict and have nearly eliminated the candy dept. Don't try to do everything all at once. Take small steps and then the bigger changes will follow.

Make a list of all the things you hate about being overweight. Write them down and stare at them. If you aren't crying, write more!
    Here are some of mine:
Clothes fit better and can buy clothes in the regular size dept. More choices, cheaper and cuter!
    More energy
Won't have to take Cholesterol pills and deal with the side effects
Easier to get in and out of car
I can sit and cross my legs (lol) - for girls
Easier to put your shoes on
    Stairs are easier
    Your joints are happier
    Your feet are happier
    Easier to ride a bike
Looking great in a swimming suit or going swimming for that matter.
Do it for your family, for your loved ones. (I want to be around to see my kid grow up and into adulthood)
You can save money - I can't believe the money we spent on food. Money for FUN stuff. Food just gets flushed down the toilet.

If need be, write a list of the benefits of over eating. I can only list one. It tastes good. Food can not make you happy. Hey, my food tastes good now! I think all the digesting my body was doing was actually making my body and brain sluggish and depressed. Yuck!

Log, Log, Log. I hate to say this but it is hard for family to be the support you need. Other people working to lose weight know what you are going through and can cheer you on. Solicit for friends on MFP. Read other friends food diaries to see what they are eating for ideas. Especially look at the ones who are having success at their weight loss.

Congrats on taking steps to being on MFP and for seeking help in the motivation dept. Best Wishes. See ya around.

I agree with you flowergirl45 my family always tell me "your fine the way you are" its okay for them. For some strange reason ALL my family members are skinny and can eat what they like and not put on anything.

I want to thank everyone again but now after all the comments/arguments/debating; I am now totally torn and confused.

I think I will stick to the 2300 calories I have been aiming for as a start. I get my Garmin F110 today so hopefully that will encourage me to walk more.

It wasn't my idea to cause arguments when starting this post but for help, guidance and advice. I have a LOT of weight to lose nearly 200lbs whilst already having arthritis in my knees it is getting important. No I don't have the motivation to do it which is why it is harder for me to get off my lazy *kitten* and go out. I have no idea why but that's just me.

The problem is, and I speak from experience, if you don't find the motivation you will just get heavier and heavier. When your health gives out they will need to demolish part of your house and use a crane to get you out. No-one wants that! Now is the time, you're on MFP, there's a support network here, get with the program and lose that weight, you will feel so much better when the first 10 or 20 lbs drops off, you won't want to stop.
