    What I say - "Sorry I stood on your toe."

    What I really mean - "Sorry we invaded your country, subjugated the population, put you under imperial rule, taxed you to death with no representation, stole your natural resources, exploited local labor, and were generally ****ty to everyone. Our bad."

    It's a British cultural thing but it took me a bit to grasp "Sorry?" (UK) in place of "Excuse me?" (US) when used for questioning someone else's comment.

    Also "sorry" is often used in place of "excuse me" for getting someone's attention. Hence that wonderful turn of phrase that so puzzles non-Brits - "I'm sorry, but you appear to have run over my cat."

    We are not apologizing for the fact that you have ran over the cat. We are drawing your attention to that fact, in a (probably unnecessarily) polite manner.
