How much is your gym membership?

I was going to Planet Fitness for $10.90 a month, but they didn't have barbells for actual weight lifting and used Smith machines instead of actual squat racks. I switched to Spectrum Fitness for $19.00ish a month and not only got free weights and a squat rack, but got it in a women-only area upstairs that hardly ever gets used. NO WAITING!! YAY!0

$64 a month for my full-service gym.
I do have an LA Fitness membership too, which I pay $50 a YEAR for (its a Bally's lifetime membership they absorbed when they bought them), but the location near me is disgusting, so I don't go. I won't give it up though, because its just too cheap to let it go, and I might return when they open a new location, or if my job (and commute) should change.0 -
Planet Fitness is $10.00
^Not a real gym! They even say so in their adverts.
Explain a "REAL" gym??
They have weights, treadmills, eliptical, arc trainer, bikes, free weights, ladies locker room, mens locker room, tanning, massage chair just to name a few...So what's not real about that?
They don't have free weights, they have dumbbells and a smith machine. That's not free weights
My planet fitness in Rosedale, Maryland has free weights0 -
15.00 a month 35.00 sign up fee gym and classes0

I go to a crossfit box so it's a little pricey, but I'd definitely recommend checking out your local YMCA. From what I'm told the membership is relatively affordable and they have great options for the whole family, plus you're able to use your membership at any YMCA location. That's what my mom did for a long time when she didn't live near a big gym and she loved it. She's a heavy lifting advocate too
Also, I hear Gold's Gym runs pretty decent specials sometimes, or it might be worth going online to craigslist or somewhere and purchasing your own equipment piece by piece so you've got that available to you at all times and don't have to worry about any hidden membership contracts, sign up fees, etc.0 -
My YMCA is $57 for the family, which includes all classes, the pool, and a water park in the summer. AWESOME.
ETA and DAYCARE. So no more excuses about not being able to workout because of the kiiiiiiidz.0 -
I pay about 30$/monthly! My gym is great. It's never super full and I never have to wait for the (only) squat rack nor a cardio machine, which is great. It's a 'no name' gym which I like.
I used to pay $65/monthly for my YMCA membership, the Y is great for the classes, but it's always packed and it got annoying having to wait even for dumbbells!0 -

PF also bans deadlifts (as a general policy, per the corporation, I know individual PFs have different rules) and don't tend to welcome heavy lifters, so I'm not sure spending the money, small amount that it is, would be worth it for someone who specifically is looking for a gym to lift heavy in.
Single-leg deadlifts with dumbbells are a good alternative! I lift heavy at PF and have never had a problem. Also, there are a lot of women who lift there and we often dominate the men! It's pretty awesome.0 -

As I said previously, not all are the same, but as a general, corporate policy, they actively discourage heavy lifting, outright band deadlifting (again, some do allow it) and set off a "lunk alarm" if you drop your weights or grunt. So, the heavy lifting crowd tends to not like them since their advertising openly mocks those who lift heavy and seems to encourage people not to grow in or increase their fitness. I have also heard/read that their "free weights" section is very limited and leaves a lot to be desired. PFs are a very divisive topic around here.
Lol, it's still a gym. It's not "fake" :ohwell:
I, personally, never said it was "fake". I was just explaining why someone, likely a serious lifter, would think it wasn't a "real" gym. I also find it odd to so actively discourage and ridicule something as good for you and for your fitness as heavy lifting.0 -
I pay $165 a month
you miss a decimal in there somewhere?
I'd bet it's a Crossfit gym.
yes its crossfit0 -

You guys are making me jealous. I pay $140 a month after a pretty nice corporate discount. But then Equinox + NYC is a dangerous combination.0

I go to the Jewish Community Center in Albuquerque...really nice facilities and a lot more going on than just the gym. We pay $93 per month for a family membership that includes the gym and a whole lot of other stuff...also discounts on cool stuff like dance classes, martial arts, swimming lessons for the kids, etc. I love it.0

I just signed up for a gym membership through my insurance company. Cost $25/mth. This $25/mth gets me access to over 5gyms in a 5 mile radius of my home address, including the Anytime Fitness, Curves, YMCA, etc. I live in the northwest burbs of Chicago so that is very reasonable for my area.0

Rush Fitness. $29/month for single gym access which includes all machine, free weights, rock wall, group/spinning/water classes. I pay an additional $39/month for small group/crossfit training classes.0

My planet fitness in Rosedale, Maryland has free weights
The reason planet Fitness gets a lot of negative attention around here is because the equipment that they stock their gyms with combined with the rules in place prevent you from following any sort of program that is legitimately high in intensity. So while a beginner might do well there, you outgrow it very quickly. The leg press machine at the PF I used to be a member of back when I first started working out maxed out at 280 lbs. I could leg press more than that much for reps when I was new and just starting out. Most people outgrow equipment like that VERY quickly. Also, most locations do not have squat racks as PF corporate policy prohibits the two main exercises you would need a squat rack for (barbell squats and deadlifts). Some locations get one anyway, but they're doing so in violation of corporate policy and it's only a matter of time before they get rid of it. Instead, they use Smith Machines, which they are starting to get rid of as well. The free weights section is a selection of dumbbells that stops at I believe 40 or so lbs, which may be enough for upper body specific work, but after you have been working out a while it will no longer be sufficient to challenge you for lower body exercises.
Your typical PF is nothing but machines, a small selection of dumbbells, cardio equipment, and maybe a smith machine which they will sound the lunk alarm for if you use it for squatting or deadlifting. If your PF has anything beyond that, then it's more than likely they're operating in violation of corporate policy and will get in trouble with corporate eventually.0 -

mine is about $18/month; I go to Xperience Fitness, used to be Gold's Gym.
One tip on the grocery bill, do you have an Aldi's or a "discount" grocery store in your area? Aldi's usually has fantastic produce at low prices, so I will get all my fruits and veggies for the week from there and then get the rest of my groceries elsewhere. Also, if you avoid the pre-packaged "healthy" foods, you are probably able to save money too if you have time to make some of that stuff at home.
Good luck!0 -
I go to the YMCA in my town. It's $39.99 (or something close to that) per month. If I go 12 times/month, my insurance covers $20 of my membership... so I usually end up paying around $19.99/month!
Great motivation to get there at least 3x/week!0 -
I'm so glad I workout at home for $00

Okay, I resisted the gym for so long---I love to run outside but in mountain states it can be challenging. I wanted to swim in a saline pool and then found out that if I volunteered 2 hours childcare a week
only 2 hours a week
I could have a free gym membership including unlimited access to a great saline [no chlorine pool]. So I do the childcare, the kids are great--and it makes me so happy to be able to take yoga, pilates, spin class---lift weights--everything they offer for two hours a week doing something pretty fun. So, don't let the: "I can't afford it" stop you----maybe you can trade for a membership. What skills could you offer? No excuses!0 -
We are lucky. In our small city we have 3 community center(soon to be 4) and they are free. Plus the University of Kansas here has 2 very well equipped gyms.0
