I know, right? It's crazy. What's even crazier is when you see Olympic athletes endorsing them for money... we all know they don't eat there, except for maybe a coffee here and there.0

Exactly! The first thing I said after seeing that was, "I highly doubt Olympians eat there." I'm nowhere close to an Olympic athlete, and I don't even eat there! Granted, they do have some things that aren't as bad as others, but it's still a poor choice. If I'm going to eat fast food, I want actual food.0 -
I worked at McDonald's last summer and the salads are actually very popular.0
-
heh.
They just pay the most money...0 -

LOL.
you would be surprised.
once you're actually in shape, not trying to lose weight... with enough muscle that your daily calorie requirements are decently high.. a McDs meal every once in awhile doesnt mean much.
I know some high level athletes that eat fast food 2 or 3 times a week... should they? thats debatable. can they? yeah.0 -
heh.
They just pay the most money...
yup.
for enough money, I could pay to be "the coolest person of the 2012 Olympic Games"0 -
Its crazy, I doubt coke is the best drink to rehydrate yourself either and they seem to sponsor sport0

That would be awesome, you should do that.0 -
It's a branding exercise they want to be seen as a healthy and fresh food supplier. The perfect couple!0
-
Yeah I had a few laughs over this as well.. The idea that all those highly trained athelets are fueling their bodies for competition on Big Macs and Fires is just ludicrous!0
-
Funny part is we get to watch the Olympics here at my work on a big screen but there is no sound. If you watch the commercial with no sound the athlete always looks disgusted at the food. The few commercials I have watched I never see the athlete eat the food.0
-
I had to laugh that drinking a coke helps support the Olympic athletes. They could at least have some healthy sponsors.0
-
heh.

^^ Defo this! ^^0 -
When I first heard this, I thought it HAD to be a joke. Saw a post on Facebook that I think summarized it nicely: "McDonalds as the official restaurant of the Olympics is like smoking being the official medicine of lung cancer..."
Not really a perfect analogy, but I think it makes the point.0 -
I also found myself shakin my head at that. McDonald's an athletes.....I'm pretty sure big macs an coke didn't get them to the Olympics.0
-
I live in the UK and went to the Olympic Stadium last week...
If you want to buy Fries/Chips without anything else, you can only buy them at McD's - you can buy Fish and Chips together from other vendors, but you can't buy Fries seperatley unless you go to McD's.
If you want Chocolate you can only buy Cadbury's and when it come to paying for it all - you can only pay with VISA or Cash, no other cards accepted!
These Sponsors know how to make some money!! :laugh:0 -
Meh... it's been this way for as long as I can remember... same with coke... it's all about advertising money... something interesting that I have heard is the lowest performing franchise is the one in the Olympic Village.0

Why laugh?0

It's funny how all these people are commenting on Olympic athletes when they really have NO IDEA on their diets. Well let me give you some accurate info.
Many of the athletes use up energy well into 6,000+ calories per day. They train an average of 5 hours (some even more) per day at their sport and then there's physical training (lifting, plyo work, flexibility, etc.) for another couple of hours. It would be difficult to eat "clean" an support an 6,000 calorie daily expenditure with 7-10 hours of it training hard. So guess where they get a lot of their calories from? Junk food. Yep. You heard it right.

All that means is that McDonald's is helping pay for things the US team needs. Nothing wrong with that. Subway is sponsoring the US team as well. Coke and McDonald's have put money towards the Olympics for as long as I can remember. The McD's commercials I have seen all had some regular person eating the food or drinking the special drinks and trying to "coach" the athlete to win gold. Its something to do with the peel the sticker game they have on some of their healthier food right now. I have also seen one of the female athletes in a Pantene hair commercial too. They aren't just making money for themselves they are making money for the team and its costs like transportation having families come along, feeding and boarding them, uniforms, etc.0

So? Who says they don't eat there? Like inner buff pointed out they are burning a lot of calories with their exercise and they have to refuel some how.
McDonalds is a HUGE chain so why shouldn't they sponsor events such as the Olympics? They can most certainly afford the price to advertise and be a sponsor.0 -

And what says you know the diet of an Olympic athlete? Do tell.0 -
This is not abnormal, McDonald's ponied up the money to be called the Official Restaurant of the Olympic Games.
Athletes have endorsed fast food restaurants over time. Michael Jordan was doing McDonald's ads back in the 1980s for example.0 -

Actually there is a lot of information available online about the US Olympic Training Centre and it's nutrition science and meals. The facility was featured on a Biggest Loser episode if memory serves and this recent article talks about the types of foods served there. They actually just replicated this kitchen in London to serve the US athletes during the Olympics:
http://www.outsideonline.com/fitness/nutrition/Americas-meal-ticket-20120801.html
"Moreman and a staff of 23 work with five sports nutritionists to design menus, from a protein-rich recovery shake that will help a wrestler make weight to a calorie-dense dinner that will ensure a swimmer replaces the 12,000 calories burned that day."
I'm sure the sponsored athletes are not replacing their "12,000 calories burned that day" with McDonalds non-food. Maybe when not training. Maybe when taking their kids out after a soccer game. Maybe when on a road trip with buddies. But not when training and not when competing. Everything in moderation, sure. But moderation is a relative term.0 -
Ironic isn't it?!:ohwell:0

From as far back as I can remember McDonald's & Coca Cola has always sponsored the Olympics.0
