I disagree with a LOT of the 'better' covers people have listed here but I've got to say ANYTHING is better that Katy fcking Perry!
And this is why I love you.

Joe Strummer AND Johnny Cash??? As in together? I have to own this for that match-up alone.

Yep its on a rarites album, Johnny was ill and the solo joe strummer version was released as a single after Joe had died, its on the streetcore album, Listen to the version with them both on youtube :-)

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this one yet:

Song: Cum On Feel the Noize
    Original: Slade
    Cover: Quiet Riot

Not necessarily one of my favorite songs, but the Quiet Riot version is clearly the definitive version (at least in the U.S.).

Agreed. I think QR also improved on their "Mama we're all crazy now."

    Song: Subdivisions
    Original: Rush
    Cover: Jacob Moon

Love or hate Rush, nobody has been able to do a good cover - there are plenty of crappy ones out there. Jacob Moon does a really nice job on this song, though

a remix is not a cover, it is a bastardization of music and should be destoryed.

Yea, too bad she couldn't keep her trap shut long enough to have a decent career.

    Song: Big Ten Inch Record
    Orignal: Bull Moose Jackson
    Cover: Aerosmith

I've heard both versions. Aerosmith's version is better. The lyrics are VERY risqué. It's amazing since the original was released in
    the 1940's

    Song: Girlfriend is Better
    Original: Talking Heads
    Cover: Umphreys McGee

Umph had been known to seamlessly tear it up when it comes to covering some classic stuff, but they have a soft spot for a lot of Talking Heads material... This is one of my favorite Talking Heads covers that they perform live.

Neither of these are necessarily better...just depends on the mood. :)

    Song: Love Song
    Original: The Cure
Best Cover (there are a zillion): 311

    Song: Boys of Summer
    Original: Don Henley
    Cover: The Ataris

    Song: Landslide
    Original: Fleetwood Mac
    Cover 1: Smashing Pumpkins
    Cover 2: Dixie Chicks

    Winner: Dixie Chicks

  • Agreed. The Cash version is definitive and even Reznor prefers it to his own.

    Song: All Along the Watchtower
    Original: Dylan
    Definitive: Hendrix

GOOD ONE! Love the Hendrix version.
  • still havnt found what im lookin for by disturbed better than U2

I think the original is easily the best, but I'll agree Dixie Chicks do a decent job. The Smashing Pumpkins version of that song makes me want to jam pencils in my ears.
  • Song: Whiskey in the Jar
    Original: Irish folk song
    Cover: Metallica

Metallica also covered "Turn the Page," but I like both theirs and the original equally. I almost always prefer original versions, but I like to hear what new twists some artists put on cover tunes.

I think the Thin Lizzy version is the best.
