"Food before one is just for fun!"

At nine months his primary nutrition should be breast milk or formula. Food comes after his bottle, as a supplement to it. Give him a good variety of finger foods, real food cut up small, cereals, things to help him develop his fine motor skills and practice chewing.

If you want to give him something else, just plain water is fine, after meals, and not too soon before meals. You don't want him getting filled up on water and then not taking in the nutrition he needs for growing (especially right now as he's due for a big growth spurt). Some docs recommend giving whole milk at 9-12 months, but pasteurized homogenized milk is being linked more and more to ongoing problems with ear infections, sinus irritation and bowel troubles... I'd be in no hurry to introduce it.

Mama milk then water then any of the following.Soy milk, Almond milk, rice milk, goat milk, fruit purees that are watered/mama milked down so it's like juice.

Also, the nut recommendations have been changed to anytime after 6 months

    "Nuts
It's true that you shouldn't give whole nuts to children who are under five years old, because of the risk of choking. But nut butters and ground nuts are fine for babies over six months old and children who do not have a family history of allergies.

Serious allergies to nuts and nut products and some seeds affect less than one per cent of the population. Your baby may be at higher risk if yourself or your baby's father, brothers or sisters have a history of food allergies. Consult your doctor or pediatrician about this if you are concerned.

If your baby is in this higher-risk group, avoid giving peanuts and peanut products until your child is at least three years old.

If you think your child might be allergic to peanuts, contact your doctor who can arrange for your baby to see an allergy specialist.

If you do not have a history of allergy in the family, you can give your baby ground nuts and nut spreads, including peanut butter, from six months.

At nine months only Mama's milk around the clock, occasionally water or goat milk (far closer in composition to human milk than cow milk). No juice ever but no one drinks juice in this house regardless of age.

At 9 months old, my older daughter was drinking formula (never watered down), and prune juice mixed 50/50 with water for constipation. She had a milk intolerance so at 12 months we switched to soy milk. Around 16 months she was able to have whole cow's milk without any issues.

My younger daughter is 6 months old and she's currently on alimentum formula. She gets a cup of water when she's in the high chair to eat solids, but she mostly just chews on it and doesn't drink much. She might get some juice if she gets constipated, but otherwise she'll only get formula or water. I have some breastmilk frozen in the freezer that I'll use at some point to test her soy and milk allergies before we actually introduce the foods to her. When she's 12 months I'll discuss with her doctor but I imagine I'll switch her to coconut milk because it has a higher fat content that other cow's milk substitutes.

At 9 months only formula and occasionally water. They do not even need water like we do b/c of its content in the formula/food. You do not need to thin out his formula, you can actually cause him to get water overload (nutrient deficiencies). He should be formula fed until he is 1 year old, then he should move on with milk.

Trying hard to stay away from cows milk though...
Cows milk is better to wait until 12 months

Yes I would not transition, if you were going to, to cow's milk until after 12 months.

OMGosh, Alimentum is nasty smelling, nasty tasting stuff!! It literally smells and tastes like vomit!! LOL We used to call it "vomit in a can"!!!! I am always amazed when I hear that kids drink it orally.

My son was tube fed Alimentum at a 30 cal per ounce rate due to medical issues.

If you can get the insurance company to cover it, Peptamen Jr. is a good toddler.older child formula to go to after having to be on Alimentum.

1 -- don't thin out his formula. The "recipe" is made that way for a reason.
2 -- a baby doesn't need juice of any kind. Breastmilk (or formula) and water are all he needs.
3 -- unless he's on a soy formula, his formula is cow-dairy based. Why are you wanting to avoid cow's milk as he gets older?

Until almost 1 year only formula (water if we were out and it was hot). Nothing else until then. My youngest is only 16 mos now and she has about 1 sippie worth of juice a week or so...mostly now she drinks water...she doesn't care much for milk so we get her calcium through yogurt, cottage cheese, and other dairy that she enjoys.

Parenting is one of those things that everyone does differently...IMO, drop the juice and just stay with formula and water until at least a year.

I did water, and rarely juice. Juice still has a lot of unneeded sugar. Do water, most kids don't really "like it." But it's free and healthy, my kids drink milk with meals and water all day. They prefer it.

This is what I did. Breastmilk only until one. Then, I started introducing milk and watered-down juice. He's 3.5 now and he still gets watered down, or iced down juice. (Too much sugar.)

Mine were breastfeed for 1 year (I had to supplement too). Once they could use a sippy cup, we do water or on very rare occasions, fruit juice. Now that my 2 oldest are no longer breastfeeding, they drink milk (non-fat or 1% per my pediatricians recommendation). My 3 yo and 22 mo both like and ask for water. On rare occasions we splurge for a little diet soda or sugar free lemonade for the older one because he knows other people are drinking soda, etc. But this amounts to only once or twice a month generally (I use a little 4 oz cup and he's perfectly happy).

My baby prefers Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum.

    He is; however, 26.
I am relieved to know I am not the only one that thought this.

my son was on aptamil til he was one then he's been on cows milk since he is nearly 2. he has a hot chocolate milkshake to go to bed with and juice for lunch (no added sugar) with milk at breakfast. he eats ceral with milk and toast, crumpets, vegetables, loves beans and spaghetti! his favourite fruit is banana and grapes. the first food i gave him was rusks with his formula milk and he LOVED them that was at 4 1/2 months.

Mine only ever drinks water or breast milk/cow's milk (he's 22 months - they shouldn't have cows milk before they are one). Very, very occasionally I have let him have a taste of juice, squash and he has tried tea!

They only really need milk and water.

I breast fed my 4 until they were one, but gave them water (which they all spat out, or used to draw pictures), I ended up putting half inch of fruit juice in a beaker then filling it with water and they would drink that. At 1 it was cows milk, but son number 3 had goat milk as he had very bad eczema. I never gave them squash or cordials or fizzy drinks. Now they still dilute their juice, they drink gallons of milk, but have herb teas and green jasmin tea too. The oldest is 19 now and none of them have fillings or are particularly fussy eaters.

The older two do buy themselves fizzy drinks occasionally, but you can't control what they put into their bodies when they become adults, just educate them when they are young.

I believe that babies should be drinking breastmilk (formula) and water only until age 1. (Someone mentioned the prune juice for constipation and we had to do this too, lol)

Are you veg/vegan? If you are trying to raise your baby this way, realize that formula has lots of animal products in it, and unless you buy specialty formula, your baby has already been introduced to cow products.

My little one started getting so cranky and upset around 6 months not just because of teething, but because he couldn't get full. We were going through so much formula and he would still be hungry! I am afraid of the teen years already.

I am pescatarian, and he was on regular formula. Unfortunately I was sick after he was born and as hard as I worked with the lac consultant, I could not get my supply up to a workable level. Tried :/ I just don't want dairy to be the cornerstone of his diet, or anyone's diet in my family. A lot of reading I've done points to better choices for the environment and our health imo.

All of these are really great suggestions, thanks!

Oh, I feel I should add that juice is not a staple of his diet. It is a treat and watered down. I promise I am not overdosing him on sugar.

Formula and water. Formula or breast milk to promote brain development and water to hydrate.

As someone said before, formula milk is made from dried cows milk. My youngest had an intolerance to cows milk that caused eczema, so after being breastfed for 15 months, he drinks goats milk which helps eczema and people with sensitive stomachs. Google it.
