One of the worst things to ever happen to the English language.

I've received e-mails from job applicants using text shortcuts.......srsly?

I understand all of it just fine. I just think it handicaps people from ever being able to ever write correctly or professionally. Grammar and spelling is horrendous enough already. I'd also like to add that the practice of not capitalizing, which is also pretty rampant, is just as bad to me.

Let's be friends and make a "proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling" discussion group.

Tell me, what are your thoughts on the Oxford comma?

Could you first define the words "colleage" and "b/c"?

Posted this on my sister in law's facebook page and gave her another reason to hate me.

Everytime I get a text that says "ilu" I make a point to type back "I love you too" because I FREAKING cannot STAND IT!

One day, he'll figure it out.

"ilu" makes me CRAZY. I always look at it and think "what in the hell is an eeloo?"

If I'm in a really bad mood, I won't even respond.

Agree! It drives me nuts! By the time I have figured out what they are trying to say, I could have sent at least 10 responses, with the vowels attached. I'm 29 and have had to asked my 16 year old cousin what they are saying!

You could respond with all of the things you want to say but in just an acronym. He'll never know what you're talking about. "FYYFSASHBS" would work.

    Enough said.

"If you think an apostrophe was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, you will never work for me. If you think a semicolon is a regular colon with an identity crisis, I will not hire you. If you scatter commas into a sentence with all the discrimination of a shotgun, you might make it to the foyer before we politely escort you from the building.

Some might call my approach to grammar extreme, but I prefer Lynne Truss's more cuddly phraseology: I am a grammar "stickler." And, like Truss — author of Eats, Shoots & Leaves — I have a "zero tolerance approach" to grammar mistakes that make people look stupid."

I some times use short cuts. Such as IDK. My brain hurts when I see people who use multiple shortcuts. I want to scratch my eyes out.

I don't even use it when I text.

Same here! It takes longer to type, but I care not!

I hate text speak other than "lol" which I feel adds a mood to a text to show you are kidding rather than being sarcastic or mean lol. I love it when my mum uses text speak as I have to ring her to ask her what she's actually trying to say to me! lol.

I already worry about adults and their commonly misspelled words, but adding in all of the awful would-be abbreviations this generation will be barely hovering above literate. It's both terrifying and depressing.

^^This. It will be the death of the English language.

Watch the movie Idiocracy and you'll see where society is going. I hate text talk and the fact that people do not communicate anymore with each other. We have resolved to "like" on any and everything on Facebook. "My mom is in the hospital and about to go into surgery" *like* REALLY?!?!? *like*??? Not I hope she's okay... Praying for her... NO! *like*
We will soon be a bunch of fat people hooked up to computer screens checking our statuses like on Wall-E.:grumble:

Love love love Idiocracy. My boyfriend and I are the highly successful couple that don't want kids/can't find the time to have them. My brother would be the other side of the spectrum. :grumble:
