Hi, I have been on MFP since this last march and I have lost 73lbs. I noticed tonight how much hanging skin I have. My arms have lots of excess skin hanging, its actually gross..I hate it! And I noticed my belly is like this also. I guess my question to everyone is have any of you had a sugery to take off the excess skin? How did you feel about it? I still have more weight I want to lose..my goal is to get to 100 lbs lost. Hopefully by next year in March I will have reached my goal. Just thought I would get some thoughts about this from everyone! Thanks!

Start lifting weights if you haven't yet, it will help with the skin elasticity.
As for the surgery I am curious also cause I am sure eventually I may have to consider it .But so far I have no problems with my skin and I started in March also0 -
I have lost 65 so far the most problem is for me is my arms the back part so I have been doing bicep and tricep exercises with weights and for my abs I do crunches, and planks and that seems to help tighten it up and I am 55 so my skin it a little harder to get back to what is use to be. Hope this helps. I can't afford surgery so I will rely on tighten up the muscles and may be that will help. Keep up the good work just think of how healty you are now.0

No idea. I'm just starting my journey. I'll have to follow this topic though to see what everyone says.
I don't know if you've ever watched it, but I'm hooked on the Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition. And I've seen numerous people on that show want/need the surgery to remove the hanging skin...and most of the time, the surgeons require at least a 40% reduction in your overall weight. *shrugs* But like I said...that's on a show...and who knows how accurate that is (I'd hope pretty accurate since people watch the show). :P0 -
The quicker you lose the weight the more hanging skin you will have. Try not to lose more than 1 or 2 pounds a week. Also using a good moisturizer everyday, and especially targeting the problem areas with moisturizer can help. Try a google search for more ideas like these. I had a good site bookmarked with ways to minimize hanging skin when losing weight, but I can't seem to find it right now. If I do find it I will send you the link!0

Same here. I started to goto the gym and started to use Creams for Stretch Marks which does help some.0

In addition to adding weight training and moisturizing, also exfoliate the problem areas and drink LOADS of water.0

This site has some good ideas although it's not the one I was thinking of:

I'm curious to know the answer as well. I lift heavy and do cardio at least three times a week. My belly is my problem area. I've noticed that as I lose fat the skin on my belly is beginning to sag. The rest of my body is firming up. I guess that part of my body will need more time. The irony of it all is that my obliques are starting to show.0

Thanks for this0 -
Lifting weights do help, I've also read taking extra Vitamin A and C will help with elasticity.0

If you were very over weight to begin with then you will have this problem I would talk to your DR. If it is excessive it may be medically necessary to have it removed. Before I get flamed on here I had a friend go from 450 to 170 pounds and had so much excess skin that it was a hygiene issue although she was very clean. Also she would get infections from chaffing. So that is extreme. I think when I first met her she was down to 220 after her first skin removal she was 170. She lives in another state now and I have not seen her since her last surgeries. It took a few and each one there was a good amount of heal time.0

Thanks everyone! Definatly all great responses and I appericate them all! I have heard the weight trainning will help, Im not a member of a gym or anything everything I do is at home, which is basically walk and jog on the treadmill but I will to start working with weights more. And thank you all for the other ideas as well I am going to try everything..I feel amazing and so much better since losing the weight just dislike all this hangy stuff..lol0

Thank u! And yes definatly! I work out at least 5 days a week but its no weight trainning just walking/jogging0 -
Definitely do weighttraining - I am down to 240 from 279 and noticed a big difference across my shoulders from doing lots of lat pulldowns, shoulder presses and chest presses.
Although I don't have a lot of excess skin I could tell that my body was firming up and the skin starting to 'spring' back0 -
I'm doing all the things they say to do and I will see how it goes in a couple of years.0

ive only lost 21 pounds, but i swear ive lost it all in the belly... not complaining, but.. i was seeing the sag! I started taking fish oil about 2 weeks ago.. 3 pills a day, and WOW! i have really noticed a difference! It helps with belly fat and while i havent done any lifting or stregnth training, because im working on balance (ive had two strokes) i do little things, like laying on the bed & clenching my butt while raising it off the bed.. its the little things that help!! Good luck to you!!0

I am having some of the same issues. My understanding is it can take up to 2 years for loose skin to snap back. With that said the older you are and/or the longer you were overweight the less likely it will go back. Vitamin C is one of the vitamins responsible for building collagen, but I am ot sure if that will help or not. It might be worth a shot either ingesting it or using a vitamin C serum (which can be very expensive). Also, lotion with collagen in it may help a bit... But it wont perform miracles. None of the suggestions can hurt you. I'd suggest some resistance and/or strength training to help support some of the skin.. Kind of like a foundation or frame. Give it atlast a year after you have lost all of the weight you hoped before taking drastic measures to give your body a chance to do its thing. I do know someone that had excess skin removed. It isn't a pretty site to see suture marks all over.... Be patient.0

Do PLANKS! Not only will they kick your ever loving butt, you will tighten your inner core muscles which will help with the belly skin issues. It's not a cure all to end all bellies, but they do work wonders!0 -
Don't know if someone mentioned this because I did not feel like reading all of the comments, but the guy who suggested weight lifting was correct and also get on a fish oil and omega 3 supplement....it regenerates skin elasticity.0

From what I've read around the web, loose skin definitely looks better when supported by muscle, but it also tends to really show its true shrinking powers when you have lost ALL of the extra fat and get really lean. Skin has to adhere to something. In your case, right now, that something is fat. There's still plenty left in the folds and rolls that hang off of you, isn't there? I know the feeling, I'm familiar with the folds and rolls. If you get really lean and strong, your skin will shrink back a lot better. Also, as people have said, it can take up to a couple of years for it to shrink as much as it is going to shrink.
If the skin isn't a hygiene issue, and isn't chafing, I would try to give this a go before considering surgery. I'm still researching surgery, in case I feel it's necessary, but it would appear that the shaping to the body and less noticeable scars might be more attainable, the leaner you are when you have it done. Also, if it's minor enough, there are non-surgical procedures for tightening the skin a bit, such as Thermage (radiofrequency). Also, if surgery DOES become a necessity, and the loose skin isn't TOO bad, look into an axillary (short scar) brachioplasty, which is an arm lift that puts the scar just in the armpit, instead of as a seam going as far as your elbow. Also, for inner thighs, a medial thigh lift puts a scar only in the "V" section of your pelvic area, instead of going all the way around the outer hips. The underside of the arms and the inner thighs are where people tend to get "crepe-y" skin that sags more, as the skin is thinner there.
I definitely second the suggestion that you don't lose weight too fast, as I've seen the results from this, and they aren't pretty. I may get flamed by the pro-weight loss surgery folks on here, but take a peruse through the before and after photos of people who have lost a lot of weight really quickly (quite often from surgery, but not always), and those who lost weight at a steady pace and incorporated serious strength training. You will see the difference between the two, I assure you. Your skin can't snap back overnight, so if it empties of all your extra weight too fast, it'll be left hanging in the breeze.
Other things I know or have heard can help:
-Drink plenty of water, to stay hydrated. Being hydrated is vital for all of our parts to function at their best, including our organs, our skin being amongst those organs.
-Exfoliate and moisturize. I have those cheap exfoliating gloves in my shower, and I also have a rough towel that I use to slough off any dead skin after I get out of the shower. I also rub oil into my skin. These days I just keep a bit of the same sunflower oil I use for cooking in a little travel bottle (sunflower oil is very high in vitamin E). Both of these actions require vigorous rubbing of the skin, which does wonders for circulation, which is another thing necessary for optimal function of our body parts.
-Make sure that you're getting enough vitamins and minerals. I've heard that vitamins A, C, and E are big ones to remember for improving skin.
Good luck, and have patience! You are still young, about my age, so chances are good that you can get your skin to shrink to something you can live with.0 -
Hey there....saw your post & figured I'd throw my two cents in. I have had plastic surgery following weight loss. 8 years ago I lost over 100lbs. I did tons of weight training through the loss of the weight, but having been heavy for most of my life & 2 pregnancies while overweight, left me with quite an apron. I had a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and had 9lbs of excess skin taken off my belly. Truely the best thing I have ever spent money on and I would do it again in a heartbeat (but I won't need too). Although I have gained back weight (and am on my way back down again...for keeps this time. Long story) I still have a beautifully flat stomach. Yes, it was expensive & uncomfortable for a while, but competely worth it!! I will try to post some pics in the next few days. Friend me so you can see them.0

Its very painful and expensive, not covered by most insurances.0

You have to do strength training! It helps your skin tighten around your body preventing lose skin. Do it at least three times a week. Work out includes squats with weights, lunges with weights, curl up with weights, and for the tummy sit ups, bridges ect.0

Hmm.. so weight training and vitamins help? I am 37, 5'2, had 2 c-sections and am insulin resistant and so far have lost 31 lbs since May. In Nov I was 282 with a 11lbs 3oz baby boy and 2x as much amniotic fluid than the average pregnant woman. He stretched my belly something fierce!!! My belly sags HORRIBLY! I have 74 more pounds to lose and I can almost guarantee that I will need skin removal surgery. I have even had my doctor tell me before I had my son that I needed it. Because of this "flappy" belly, my c-section incision didn't heal properly and got infected and I ended up wearing a wound vac for over 3 months. If you don't know what that is, google it. It was a nightmare. I can not afford that surgery and I know my insurance won't cover it. I have heard from people that have lost a ton of weight that although they FELT better and were healthier, they didn't like the look of this skin and felt as self conscience as they did overweight. I am sorry that I didn't sugar coat this post.0
