This is very sad news.
Unfortunately no matter how healthy a person is, their ticket will come eventually.0 -
But sometimes news like this makes me feel like you can't fight fate. Just about everyone in my family is diabetic and have heart disease. They don't workout, they don't watch what they eat. I have always worked out and watched what I eat, but because of my family history I am high risk for heat disease and diabetes. It is a huge fear that I end up with these conditions, and if I do after my best efforts to live a fit and healthy lifestyle then I think I will feel like I wasted my time.0

Seems like a defeatist way to look at it. For all we know his healthy lifestyle gave him an extra 10 years.0 -

I was hoping this would be a hoax. Really sad news.0

Atherosclerosis affects all people who eat animal based foods, regardless of fitness level.
He was a vegetarian.0 -

You are right, he may have gotten an extra ten years. But if you worked your entire life to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle and still ended up having a heart attack or diabetes. You wouldn't be frustrated to be in the same predicament as those who didn't try at all. Wouldn't you feel at times when you were at the gym or counting calories, that maybe you could have just enjoyed life since you ended up in the same place as those who did. I don't know all about Michael Clarke Duncan's health or lifestyle. He looks like a bodybuilder to me and has been a vegetarian for some years now. I would be so mad if i gave up meat and had a heart attack anyway. I'm just saying. Being fit and healthy is a sacrifice, but we do it because we believe the outcome is worth it. But what if its not??0 -

Here is the difference for me:
When I had my TIA I was working out and eating healthy. My first thought was "This aint MY fault!" The doctor said the surgery could be done right then because of the state of my health
Cut to 2 years later, after going back to my old ways because.......well I did! I go in for a routine colonoscopy, they do an endoscopy because of some symptoms I had. They find a hiatel hernia and GERD. The FIRST thing I thought was "Crap, this could have been avoiced!!"
Then the doc comes in and I say "Why". To which he responds "Have you recently gained weight? Why? What do you eat? How often do you exercise?" Man, I have got to tell you I was very upset with myself.
I am back to the real me and loving every day. If or when anything else happens, I will know I did all I could.
As fro Mr Duncan, who knows what his real life was about? He may be bulked and muscular for when we see him, but maybe he wolfed down fried foods and junk, then leaned out for the shows. We have no idea really.0 -
I read that he had became a vegan a few years ago and was talking about how much better he felt, like someone else said you never know if he had any other conditions that he might not even had know about. Thats why it pays to get regular checkups. He was a great actor, the green mile was my favorite movie of all time i know he will be missed by many.0

 He was a funny guy0 -
Very sad. I've been singing "Leaving on a jet plane" in a really really deep voice since I heard the news.0

Just read that actor Michael Clarke Duncan died. this morning He had a massive heart attack a few weeks ago and never recovered. He was a very muscular guy, like a bodybuilder. How does someone in that kind of shape have a heart attack and die at 54?? I just don't understand.
^^^this^^ my total cholesterol dropped 50 points went I went vegan back in April...it had been above 200 as a vegetarian!0 -
Let's remember that a lot of athletes die young due to heart issues ---everything in moderation including exercise0

Loved him in Armageddon0 -
A high school friend of mine passed away at 19 because of a heart attack. He was an all star Rugby player.
The heart attack was the result of a heart defect.
Maybe it's the same for Mr Duncan0 -
People die. They health doesn't always matter. But he was probably overweight. He weighed over 300 pounds. I had never even heard of him but drugs are always possible in these things. He went vegetarian I guess. Don't know when he did that or why. But that's no guarantee of health either. He may have simply had a bad heart. He perhaps was born with a bad heart. I guess people will know more later.0
-
Probably just bad luck..0

that is sad, i liked him and so did my kids. its no age at all to die, blimey! but nothing really shocks me anymore i have worked for the ambulance service for the past 11 years, the amount of seemingly fit young people that die, its one of the things that make me want to get thinner and fitter now before its too late.
the actor seemed a big guy though, i mean tall and in the Green Mile he was overweight. i saw a documentary a little while ago, they were showing the fat that people carry on the inside of their organs, even very thin people were not really healthy because of their lifestyles.0 -
Perhaps it's not a question of longevity but rather of quality. This man was in excellent shape, he made how many movies? He made people laugh, smile and cry by playing characters on film. I know very little about him or his personal life but I'm pretty sure the life he enjoyed before his death was pretty good.
And then there are people like me. Yes, my heart is quite fine. My cholesterol is fine. My blood pressure is fine. My blood work, with the exception of vitamin D (I live in Oregon) is all fine. I live in chronic pain and weigh over 500 pounds. Longevity runs in both sides of my family. The average age of demise is 93. Do you think I want to live into my 90's being morbidly obese? Suffering from chronic pain? Not being able to do many of the things I want to be able to do? That's the result of doing nothing. Sure, you may live longer, but do you really want to?0 -

Maybe he did have a bad heart, but I doubt he would be considered overweight. Yes he was about 300lbs, but he was also 6'5 and was extremely muscular. Maybe to achieve and maintain that build over the years he did some unhealthy things, who knows.0 -
Could have been anything from heavy steroid use to a virus to an unknown birth defect, could happen to any of us, that's why I alwayscsay, bury your skeletons deep....lol.0
-
I have read that hard core steroid use can cause heart problems. His massive size could mean he may have used them at some point. and even being a vegetarian now, wasn't enough to make up for the damage of his youth. I saw an interview he did just a month or so before his heart attack and he was still very muscular and clearly maintained his physique.0
-
Tragic, loved him in green mile. Isn't just so frustrating that a guy that works out, loses weight, tries to eat well dies so young, and yet I know guys, that have smoked, drank in excess and eaten everything that stayed still long enough to be fried...and live to be octogenarian. Such is the human condition.0
-
Wow!!! This is a shock!!!!0
-
DOA from DNA0
-
It's really too bad because he was such a good actor and person. He loved everyone and appreciated so much. He will be dearly missed.0
-
its so so sad my gosh god bless him and his family R.I.P Michael Clarke Duncan0
-
Everyone has already mentioned Green Mile and Armageddon...but I feel the need to give him a shout-out for another excellent role...Leo, on The Finder! ♥
I hope they don't replace him with another actor. He WAS Leo. NOBODY else can play that character.0 -

He had been a vegetarian for the past 3 years. He said he thought he was in the best shape of his life.0
