I really like lift more than aerobics. Not that doing aerobics is bad and lifting better, it is just I find it so boring. I like the challenge of lifting and the results it gives me. It is fun to ask people to feel my muscles.0

I don't know where you're getting your information from but it is completely and utterly wrong.
There have been numerous studies done of endurance athletes that have demonstrated that they suffer no more long term joint problems than the general population. Furthermore there is a growing body of evidence that resistance training is of considerable value to our aging population especially men over the age of 40 as a way to combat the loss of lean muscle tissue that normally occurs through aging.

http://bicyclelab.com/masters-athletes-keep-their-muscle-with-age/
as to your "trough the roof" assertion do you have any factual data to back it up or are you using the anecdote of one triathlete to draw your conclusion?
If anything we should be exercising more as we age (I'm 56 and plan on running, biking & swimming until I die. Strength training is also part of the plan) Age is a poor excuse for laziness.0 -

Awww aren't you a sweet thang?
Actually, on MFP there has been a movement by women toward heavy lifting and we have been very vocal about it, yes. However, outside of MFP - there is still so much controversy, misunderstanding, and confusion among women and lifting. Especially in the 35+ age category. There are hundreds of people joining MFP each day - completely unaware of the benefits of lifting - and also still caught up in the myths that are still being perpetuated by the ignorant. I know this because I've personally helped several of them get started with lifting. So no validation required - but more awareness (in the form of a catchy quote) to the newbs joining the site that they need to give careful thought to adding this to their routines. :flowerforyou:0 -

Furthermore - nobody said they endorse poor form or technique - which is really the key to messing up your body, young or old. And lifting weights is proven to help bone density - especially in women, where osteoporosis is such a great concern as we age.0 -

Well when I lifted heavy and was fat at the same time I think it scared other woman. They didn't want to look like that and I don't blame them. LOL It wasn't until I lost the fat that the muscles looked pretty. My husband constantly comments on how small I am, even though I'm ripped. The fact is women won't get big and bulky unless they take steroids and so many female body builders take it (even in the "natural" contests) so that scares women because they don't want to look like that either. Until there are more of us who lift heavy, lose the fat, and don't take steroids woman will continue to be scared because that's the only way it look feminine and natural.0

To the person with the book sized post above...
You're almost right.. if you go to extremes, its easier to injure yourself.
That said, if more woman did proper form and lifted heavy, they would actually strengthen their bones, joints, etc.....
Its actually one of the best things you can do to PREVENT injury.0 -

I am almost 52 and I have lifted heavy for over 30 years. At 51.5 years old my DXA scan shows I have the bone density of a super athletic 30 year old. I have arthritis in my hips but that runs in the family. I take joint supplements and losing the 60 lbs of weight has taken the stress off my joints and back. My 15 years of chronic back pain when away as soon as I lost the fat.
Heavy lifting does not mean Power Lifting. I have also been a runner for over 30 years. That probably caused more stress from impact than the lifting, but I continue to do it because I love it.
Everyone needs heavy lifting and some cardio.0 -

It's her life why should you care how she lives it. And she's not hurting anyone.
BTW....check out this ironman woman, she has done 30 ironman competitions and a few marathons and she's an 87 year old nun.......https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=4331719248287&set=a.1095660068830.16398.1146428163&type=1&theater#
And.....tell all the Tarahumara Indians who run,oh, 50 miles easily in a day. Every day, well into their 80's and 90's that they are hurting them selves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnwIKZhrdt4
If that woman had to have a hip replacement, she had bad technique or something inherently wrong with her.
I have changed my running form and am running now with no more shin splint pain and no more knee pain. And I will be doing it way into my 80's.
And I am 45 years old.0 -
I started lifting heavy only about a month ago and since doing so I've lost inches...hardly no weight loss but my arms, legs and shoulders are starting to really look nice as I'm quite skinny there.
To be honest as much as I like cardio, I'd chose weightlifting over cardio any day.0 -
