For the most part. I will forget it for eating out in resteraunts and stuff
Anyone joining me? Or have had good results from going gluten free?
I have heard wheat can make you retain weight?
Though i am doing it to relieve indigestion... more than anything.

Going gluten free only "works" if you have a gluten intolerance or have Celiacs. Other than that, it probably won't do any more for you than cutting out any other random food item.0

I've heard that it does help keep the weight on. There's a book called 'wheat belly' that I've heard is quite educational on the matter.0

Not 100% true. People who do Paleo really don't have gluten in their diet and their bodies are pretty darn near perfect (at least from what I've seen paleo eaters showcase).
I believe I was miss dx'd last year with celiac disease, come to find it's really only acid indegestion. Apple cider vinegar helps for the cheat meals.0 -

I'm doing the South Beach Diet, which means I automatically won't be eating gluten in the first few weeks...but it isn't the lack of gluten that counts, it is the effect that removing these carbs has on your blood glucose levels and the fact that it essentially forces the body to burn its own, stored glucose (glycogen) and fat reserves. That's the simplest way I can put it...it is certainly more involved and not quite as clear-cut as my mini explanation! You should try SBD, though0 -
first off, must be nice to be able to "just not worry about in restaurants and stuff". Being gluten free isn't a choice for me and its not an easy diet to have to follow. If you are just looking to drop a few pounds, cut out white foods, flour, rice, and processed foods.0

Gluten really isnt an on for the week, off for a weekend type of thing, at least for people who have a condition where they can not eat gluten. It takes months ((6+) for your intestines to heal from damage from wheat when there is disease involved. Meaning you can not eat it only on the weekends. I have an auto-immune disease, so that is why im choosing to give it whirl for more cognitive improvement and less joint pain/stiffness. As far as weight loss, idk if it really helps or not, just chimming in with my knowledge. Good luck.0

This is my third week going wheat and dairy free and I couldn't have felt better. I am less gassy and bloated and I am digesting my food much better. I am doing a 30 day test run and so far its awesome plus the added benefit of weight loss.0

The only people I have known who have had "good results" from going gluten free are people with Celiac's disease who need to be GF so they aren't sick. But none of them have lost weight by doing it. (I agree with the other posters who say there's more to it...)0

As i said in my original post, I am cutting it out to relieve indigestion.
being allergic to something and having an intollerance to something are very different.
I have spoken to my doctor.
By 'good results' i was meaning across the board, people who have noticed a change in weight, people who have suffered indigestion and bloating like me, just personal experiences really.
I dont eat out once a week, or once a month even, perhaps 2/3 times a year, but that is really my business isn't it, no need for people to get shirty about it, frankly if i want to cover myself in wheat and roll around, thats my business too!
If 'reducing' (if everyone is more comfortable with that terminology) the gluten in my diet improves my digestive system, then thats a good thing. Again, i haven't suggesed i will hurt or attack anyone else, i haven't said i will harm or hurt myself so WHY this thread has created so much hosplity is quite beyond me.

Well! I had the same meal as the boys but with gluten free pasta and didn't cook my pasta properly!
It was okay though, just the same as normal pasta really.0 -

The only people I have known who have had "good results" from going gluten free are people with Celiac's disease who need to be GF so they aren't sick. But none of them have lost weight by doing it. (I agree with the other posters who say there's more to it...)
I've gone grain free by choice (and hence, gluten free), but not because I'm Celiac. As a result of going grain free, I have since discovered that I am more sensitive to gluten when I do consume it. I think before I was actually gluten sensitive (though not Celiac), and my body was adjusted to dealing with the constant sensitivity. Now that I have eliminated it, my gut has a stronger reaction to gluten.
I'm so thankful that I'm not Celiac. It is nice that I don't have to worry about getting inadvertantly "glutened" at a restaurant. If I do eat something that has small amounts of gluten, I'm not going to be terribly sick. If I eat a big gluteny dish, I will be in the bathroom for the next two days, but not in the hospital, as many Celiacs do.
The OP may find that she can't cheat in restaurants after 30 days of being gluten free without feeling sick. Or, she may find that she can. Still, eliminating grains may be healthful for her if she does it 80% of the time.0 -

There is a difference between gluten intolerance (Celiac) and gluten sensitivity. Celiac is an auto-immune disorder. Gluten sensitivity is not. However, there are many of the same symptoms between the two, with varying levels of severity.0 -

Anywho, I have read a LOT about gluten and I have read it helps with indigestion because that little flappy at the end of your esophagus becomes stronger and works more efficiently. I dont know the scientific reason, but I have read quite a few good things about it, I hope that gives you some hope! Once again, good luck!0 -

Thanks Steph and Carli... I was fairly sure i was not going mad, and that all the stuff i have read/been told by 'foodie' types was not complete hot air.
I do believe that most people have a slight gluten intollerance, like most people have a mild lactose intollernace. These are things we consume far, far too much of in our diets.
No i am not going to completely cut all gluten out of my diet, though as a pp said, i may find i am more sensitive to it after cutting it out for a while.
Ideally i would like to remove the gluten for 30 days, which is going to take some doing and getting used to, before reducing my indigestion meds and seeing if its helped. If not i will re-think.
I know most of you will scoff at this, but my heart is telling me that my heartburn problems are caused by wheat. Maybe i am wrong but i dont think i am. What Steph said about the osophogus is interesting, even with my pills i often wake in the night with fluid (not acidy fluid because of the pills) but fluid all the same, in my throat.
It seems that the contents of my stomach struggle to stay inside my stomach!
I have not woken up and though 'oh i know, removing all gluten from my diet will be fun!' Its something i seriously think may help me.
Today i have failed somewhat because OH came home with some scones, but we are off to do a food shop tomorrow so that is the best time to start.
I just hope it works. Or something works!0 -

If you've done so much research on the reasons why reducing or giving up gluten is beneficial to MOST people (which is it) then why the negativity? Why did you ignore the bit of my post that said I was giving it up because of indigestion? Surely if you have done all this vast research, you would have discovered what i have, and what others have, that gluten is often linked to indigestion and heartburn.
Why the negativity? Surely if you have nothing but nastiness for someone who has done nothing bu tried to improve their health and life, its 'pointless' to post on their thread?0 -

To the OP, since I'm sure I'm looking like a total b*tch about now.
I wasn't trying to tell you that your diet is pointless, regardless of what others think. What I was saying is that NORMALLY if you are not going gluten free because of a health issue, there aren't a lot of benefits to it. I have lots of stomach issues and have tried going gluten free, tried cutting out carbs, breads, pastas, etc. and none of those things helped. The one thing that did help me (not saying it will for you) is eating as "clean" as possible. No processed meats, no canned items (besides tuna in water) no pre mixed rices, pastas, etc. Everything is fresh, raw, and natural. THAT helped stopped the bloating, indigestion, etc.
With that said, if your doctor recommends it, then go for it. It's not easy because there a lot of random foods that contain gluten, a lot of items you wouldn't even think of (like soy sauce). But if it helps, stick to it. There are plenty of gluten free sites, with recipes and quick meals. They have special bread that is gluten free that you can find in some stores (I'm in CA and Trader Joe's here sell it).
Best of luck to you. I am sorry to hear that people are writing nasty messages. I hope that stops and is not necessary. The ONLY reason I posted on here, and came back to apologize is because for one, I don't want you to get discouraged and for two, because I don't like seeing that people try to cut things out of their diet when it's not necessary (which may or may not be your case). A lot of people look way too much into what they are eating. It shouldn't be that hard, UNLESS you are having major health issues and then yes, you want to figure out what it is that is making you sick.0 -

Going gluten free is a trendy thing to do as some brain dead Hollywood type have been suggesting it's the best thing since the discovery of fire. If you're one of the small percentage of people who would actually benefit from it then it's a good idea, the vast majority of people doing it are merely sheep who heard something on Dr Oz or read about it in the some trashy grocery store tabloid.0 -

I am doing as much as possible going gluten free, but you have to read labels very carefully as most products will be high in calories and sugar, not too mention way more expensive.0

You are correct, it is beneficial, for people with health issues, intolerances to gluten or Celiac. To say that its beneficial to most people without those issues, is incorrect. It's a fad, just like other "diets" out there. I am not trying to be negative and was actually just trying to help. Sorry you took it that way. I have read up on gluten free diets but never did I say I know everything about it. I'm obviously not a doctor and don't know what is causing your indigestion.0
