Can organic food help you lose weight?

As already posted, losing weight is a calorie deficit. Period.
However; meat with growth hormones are really not your friend. Think about it. Other than that, most pesticides don't have calories as far as I know.
But they do have a bearing on weight gain because many pesticides have a "zenoestrogenic" affect on the body. Zenoestrogens just like real estrogens can cause weight gain, high blood sugar levels and other undesirable health effects. You are right about growth hormones in meat. Bovine growth hormone given to cows to increase milk production is bad for us and bad for the cows. The agribusiness giants like Monsanto, Cargill and Archer Daniels Midland are only interested in profits and care not a whit about public health. They routinely lie and obfuscate to cover up the disastrous effects their policies are having on agriculture. And they buy influence wherever they can to protect themselves from the tremendous loss of revenue that will occur once the people really understand where agribusiness is leading us.
The super-wealthy have their own organic farms that they eat from. When they attend big conflabs like the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, they insist on being served only organic food. But any old chemically-laced garbage is okay for the rest of us.
see i post a scientific study, i quote the peer reviewed published version of it...
you post stuff that "was on many health websites" and then go right off the deep end...
can you back your statements up with credible independent sources?
watch, this is you
"this has been posted on many science websites
aliens are injecting people in their sleep with radioactive chemicals
that is why there are more cancers detected than ever before, not because were better at detecting cancer, its the aliens..."
unless you can back up your statements with hard evidence, you may as well be talking rubbish.
What is it that you want backed up? The fact that the super-wealthy demand organic food? I have a friend who is a chef at an exclusive resort. When the super-wealthy and politically well-connected attended a conference there recently, they were given explicit instructions by the advance-teams of the same. Only organic food was on the menu, I can assure you. You can insinuate that I am lying and mock all you want, but you probably know that I am telling the truth. By the way, you never said, are you in any way connected to the corporations that are spending millions to fight Proposition 37 in California?0 -
Look up the evidence for yourselves. Why do you think farmers' cooperatives are suing the big agribusiness corps? Why do you think that GMOs have been prohibited in a number of European countries? I only hope it is not to late to stop the food insanity that is occurring.0
-
I like you, aroundthemulb!
I buy organic, not for weight loss though, to avoid pesticides and GMOs. I can also taste a difference. You could technically lose weight eating 1200 calories worth of twinkies a day if you wanted but good luck with being healthy.0 -

Tee-hee, thanks!:blushing: I'm glad that you eat organic food and you will be too in the years to come. Cancer is getting very scary---women in their twenties are getting breast cancer. That was unheard of 40 years ago.0 -
Ok first a disclaimer... i do not work for or with any company, corporation, individual, government, association etc that has any vested interest in GMO food, organic food or anything similar
i work in a hotel/restaurant and we serve non organic GMO non GMO and organic food dependant upon supplies available and the demand of the dish.
Now thats out of the way...
Im not denying that the heads of these corporations/groups want organic food only... that is their remit,
what i am contesting are your claims about the health benefits/drawbacks of GMO and non organic foods.
for example"The agribusiness giants like Monsanto, Cargill and Archer Daniels Midland are only interested in profits and care not a whit about public health. alsoA two-year long French feeding study designed to evaluate the long-term health effects of a genetically engineered corn found that rats fed Monsanto’s maize developed massive breast tumors, kidney and liver damage, and other serious health problems. The major onslaught of diseases set in during the 13th month
Female rats that ate genetically engineered corn died 2-3 times more than controls, and more rapidly, while the male GE-fed rats had tumors that occurred up to a year-and-a-half earlier than rats not fed GE corn
Anthony Trewavas, professor of cell biology at Edinburgh University, questioned the way the research had been conducted, saying the number of rats involved in the study – 200 – was too small to draw any meaningful conclusions.
‘To be frank, it looks like random variation to me in a rodent line likely to develop tumours anyway,’ he said.
He also claimed Professor Seralini was an anti-GM campaigner and that previous studies questioning the technology’s safety had not withstood scrutiny. The EPA admits there’s “mounting evidence” that Monsanto’s insecticide-fighting YieldGard corn is losing its effectiveness in the Midwest. Last year, rootworms resistant to the toxin in the genetically designed corn infested fields in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Nebraska
yes this is true, however a simple switch to a new combination grain and toxin will solve this problem as the rootworm will not be resistant to the new toxin,
the alternative is to stop using the toxin completely and the rootworm would cause the same damage anyway as there would be no defence against it.Genetically engineered foods are responsible for development of resistant weeds and pests; increased pathogenic virulence; degradation of soil quality; reduced nutrient content in food; exponential rise in infertility and birth defects; and reduced crop yields, and more..."
increased pathogenic virulence you claim... of what disease? all diseases? thats a pretty strong claim... can you back this up with some kind of evidence? a study? a paper?
reduced nutrient content in food - this has been proven to be a false claim.
organic food is no higher in nutrient content than similar strains of non organic food. GMO foods can be higher or lower in nutrient content depending on the modifications made... and as many farmers want high quality crops, would choose nutrient rich ones. as these would sell for a premium.
exponential rise in infertility and birth defects - this table here from the cdc http://oaspub.epa.gov/eims/eims.ROEreport.displayImage?graphrecno=13225
shows that some birth defects are reducing, some increasing, but overall little change... over a 10 year period... thats hardly "exponential increases" and as for infertility this link here
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nsfg/abc_list_i.htm#impaired
shows that between 2002 and 2006-10 infertility (reference here as impaired fecundity) dropped by 0.9% (absolute) or 7.3% (relative) so thats that claim wrong...
its just that with 10 minutes of research i have provided evidence that your claims are wrong...
you have merely ranted with misinformation and dare i say lies.0 -

Research it yourself---you will find that I am right and you are wrong. GMO foods will produce a health disaster of epic proportions. We are already suffering illnesses from the poisons in our food supply. Ask yourself just one question. If the genome has changed little over the last few generations (and there is NO compelling evidence that it has), why is it that obesity and diabetes (among other chronic health conditions) are epidemic? We eat significantly fewer calories (and less fat) than our farmer ancestors---yet they were thin and we are fat. It can't be only that they did hard manual labor and we do not because you can visit any construction site and see fat construction workers. We are an unhealthy lot. We are overfed and undernourished in the words of one nutritional scientist.
Fatty liver disease is also epidemic and fatty liver is not linked with obesity as much as it is with toxins. A liver loaded down with toxins cannot properly do its job and one effect is the inability to break down body fat to use for energy. The information is out there for those who are not in denial.0 -
again... no sources, no proof... just speculation
where do you get this idea that ancestor farmers ate more calories than we do...
and i dont know how many builders you know... but they dont all work as hard as a manual labouring farmer...
this is the modern age, we have diggers and tractors and all sorts of equipment, plus we have a much higher calorie dense food available, there were no sugary drinks, there were no sweets, there were no fast food restaurants...
http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/80beats/2011/06/17/early-farmers-were-sicker-and-shorter-than-their-forager-ancestors/
oh my... ancestor farmers were sickly and small?
anyway how would you know what "ancestor" farmers ate? did they keep food diaries?0 -
I buy organic whenever I can but that is because I don't fancy eating genetically modified foods or growth hormones. Calorically there is no difference between organic food but the benefits beyond that make the extra cost of organic food worth it to me. No one knows what the long term effects of the GMO and the hormones have on people and their relation to cancers etc. I personally just prefer to eat the food the way it was naturally made and not stuff that was formulated in a lab.
It's a personal choice.0 -
Trading out the non-organic oranges for organic oranges isn't going to change your weight. Switching from buying boxes of mac & cheese to buying oranges will affect your weight.
I try to shop at the co-op instead of the grocery store because with the grocery store, we start in the back for the dried stuff we need and end up going all the way through the crappy stuff before we get to the produce... by that time we're sick of grocery shopping and just grab a bag of apples and go. But if we shop at the co-op, half of the store is produce, and there's no crap. We grab the things on our list as we see them and then fill up on produce 'cause it all smells and looks so good (unlike Walmart where half of it is bruised or going bad, and items are smaller and duller in color). We have a membership with the co-op so we get percentages off and member-only sales, plus for every hour of volunteer service locally we get an 18% off coupon for our next whole trip. So we spend almost the same as at Walmart, with the exception that fruits and veggies are more expensive than microwaveables & boxed meals. So, by detached incident, eating organic loses me weight.0 -
It tastes better IMO. But no.0
-
This thread is hilarious.
Organic food for weight loss/ better nutrition = No value.
Organic food for the potential benefits of avoiding pesticides and GM = Value.
But always read labels.
Labels, labels, labels.
Invest time, not money.0 -

Yes, agriculture was a step back from hunting/gathering. Anthropologists have shown that hunter/gatherers were bigger and stronger and more resistant to disease. The reason why agriculture was developed was to offset the famine that was a product of climate change (yes, it happened back then too) and the burgeoning population. Growing grain became a very important part of fending off starvation as it was calorie dense and non-perishable. It could be stored for long periods of time (in fact, grain has been discovered in ancient Egyptian tombs that is still viable!) and was there when needed. But it was not the ideal way to nourish the human body and thus mankind became more sickly and weak.
We can know what our recent farmer ancestors ate by various accounts. My grandmother grew up on a farm and her job was to make the bread for the whole family. They ate LOTS of fat and calories. But they were very active.0 -
If you eat less of it, yes.

For those of you who are really interested in knowing the causes of your obesity, here are some videos that will educate you:
1. Dr. Robert Lustig, who is a pediatrician, touches briefly on the topic of toxins in our environment but he spends most of his time on the chief toxin of them all---sugar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0z5X0i92OZQ&feature=relmfu
2. Medical journalist, Gary Taubes, speaks to the same issue of carbohydrates---especially simple carbohydrates such as sugar and starch---as the cause of obesity. He shows definitively that this is NOT new information but one that was "forgotten" by modern medicine. Fascinating and entertaining lecture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDneyrETR2o&feature=relmfu0 -

Nope, organic food has the same nutritional benefits of non organic. The ONLY benefit of organic is the lack of pesticides, or any chemicals used during the growth. It's more or less a body benefit for you to keep it clean and not add chemicals. If you can afford it, go for it, if not, don't worry. Sometimes a minor dose of toxins keeps your immune system working.
Oh, on a side note, organic TASTES better in most cases as well. But regardless, you can eat a ton of organic and gain weight. Same theory for vegan and vegetarian. You can be fat and be either of those.0 -
I say buy organic because it tastes better! (ergo, eating more vegetables, eating more fruits = better health)
I used to hate tomatoes until I had a local, organically grown tomato.
HUGE difference in taste and flavor.
This may not be true for other fruits or vegetables but regular tomatoes in my area taste like paper and organic, local tomatoes taste earthy and delicious.0 -
No, it can't. How do people come up with theories like this?0
-
It's hilarious to me the amount of hatred some people have for organic eating. I can afford to eat local, organic produce, and I choose to eat said produce. Get over it.0
-
My freind told me today that if you eat all organic food you will lose weight. Is this true?
LOL,
no. Losing weight is a result of an energy deficit. Since organic foods have the same calories as non organic food, they aren't any different from a weight loss perspective.
This.
There may be other benefits to organic, but weight loss isn't one of them.0 -
Doubtful, but you'll avoid all those nasty pesticides and whatnot. What you *would* benefit from is eating more *natural* foods and cutting out the *processed* foods. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store and buy fresh fruits and veggies (organic if you really want to) and stick to the leaner meats (chicken and fish).
Here's an awesome link that gives some more guidance on healthier eating.

Organic food has been scientifically proven to offer no measurable benefit to ones diet..
however it will have a significant impact on your wallet.
i can provide sources if you wish, or you can take my word for it.
your friend has unfortunately fallen victim to the cloud of misinformation surrounding organic food.
Unfortunately, a lot of "science" that suggests there is no difference, is sponsored by Big Agrigculture (for obvious reasons). Investigate your sources. Other more independent studies have found significantly higher levels of many nutrients in organic foods. That's why it tastes better and, since it is more nourishing, one is satisfied with less (in addition to skipping the toxins that Big Agriculture includes in their versions).
The other benefit of buying organic is that to be USDA certified organic, there are NO GMOs. It's much closer to the way that food was farmed, cattle raised, 100 years ago before science was so incorporated to everything that we consume.
What's wrong with science? If it weren't for science we wouldn't be able to feed the 7 billion people who currently inhabit this planet, people would still routinely die from pneumonia and we'd still be riding horse drawn carriages (and we'd have no Internet......maybe science is a bad thing after all! . )
People have funny notions about how idyllic life was 100 years ago. Polio and tuberculosis were rampant, leukemia was a death sentence and a minor infection, now readily treatable, could prove fatal. Yup, life sure was good back then.......0 -

This cracks me up. This thread is like a political MEME.
"Buys organic because pesticides cause cancer and big pesticide corporations are controlling studies to keep people in the dark. But believes the government has best interest at heart and is going to vote for Obama or Romney."0 -

Why are people so afraid of GMO?
you can choose high yield, resistant, GMO crops...
or a substantial number of the global population starve to death.
your choice
Knee-jerk emotional drama is so much easier and so much more satisfying than actually learning about any given topic.0 -

Nope. Is it possibly healthier for you because it may have less toxins? Yes.0
-
The organic produce tends to taste better because most conventionally grown produce is grown to have the longest shelf life and the most uniform appearance, which concidentally tends to breed all the flavor out of it.0

Organic veg hasn't been sprayed with chemicals. That's the difference.
Only it has been researched that the chemicals on other veg and fruit is in such small trace amounts, that is has no effect on you at all. So fruit and veg doesn't really matter which you buy.
Organic meat is of higher quality (no water injected to make the meat look like it is more than it actually is and no different meats "glued together"). The animals will also have had a far better life and they use a lot less antibiotics and other chemicals. Those antibiotics are only needed when animals are really packed together and organic farming gives the animals more space, so less disease spread = less antibiotics needed.0
