My sports doctor likened my metabolism to a fire. If you want that fire to burn hot and bright then you must feed it otherwise it will be dull and pitiful and of little use. Providing little warm and light. But if I throw on a big log and give that fire a good kick start then it will be hot, useful and efficient requiring top ups during the day. The body is the same way. The metaphor was decent, but it was wrong in this situation.
Your body wakes up like a roaring furnace, it's already in fat burning mode. Cortisol is up, insulin is down. And GH levels are getting ready to rise.
Throwing food on the fire is like pouring water on it first thing in the morning.

I agree that for most of us it is helpful, if not critical, to eat breakfast. My boyfriend is one of the outliers for this topic. He eats one or two meals a day and has lost 30 pounds. It appears he isn't trying, but I've seen that he's taking smaller portions at those meals. And thus he is loosing weight faster than me, who is eating 5 times a day, measuring everything, and counting every crumb that goes in my mouth.0

You can be a strength coach, a doctor, an athlete, etc without knowing jack **** about nutrition.....

Go to the library, spend 30 minutes reading a handful of books on nutrition and you'd understand why we're saying he doesn't know what he's talking about.0 -

i have a cup of coffee for breakfast most mornings, after 24 oz of water, i usually dont even get hungry until lunch time most days..and i joined MFP on September 11th and since then have lost 7 lbs. eating breakfast doesnt matter when losing weight its about the total # of calories consumed and burned. so basically for me..lunch is my breakfast..........dinner is my lunch and then i usually have a snack before bed, which is my dinner......same difference.......all i care is that i stay at or a little under my calorie goal for the day.0

I'm not a b-fast person. but i make my self eat fome thing light or i have no energy to get through my nearly 24 hour schedule (I have a toddler and a newborn). i usally eat 100 calorie oatmael or 100 calorie greek yogurt. sometime add cerlery with peanut butter.0

I agree. A hearty snort of cocaine in the morning really gets my metabolism going.
I like to sprinkle cocaine on my Honey Bunches of Oats. Man, I burn all day long after a bowl of that!

All these wonderful myths. There is zero scientific proof about this, its simply said so the average Joe doesn't get hungry and eat junk, a majority of the people on here aren't the average Joe, they are bound and determined to lose, or gain, and the time of day they consume their calories does not factor in.0

This is also complete BS. As everyone has just stated, its about calories in VS calories out. However, I'm a huge advocate of eating breakfast, not because I believe it spikes metabolism, but because I believe it sets the tone for my entire day of eating. If I eat a ****ty breakfast or skip it completely, my body will either crave more crappy foods or will push me toward a dense calorie source for energy & satiation while looking for nutrients.
For this reason, I think its important for people who are trying to lose weight to eat breakfast. It is a great way to develop a healthy mindset & eating schedule...and when you consider the fact that there are plenty of studies to back up that naturally thin people eat breakfast, then why deprive yourself of something small in the morning upon wakening, or if you're like me, something substantial? I stop eating a few hours before bed so I do be starving when I wake up.
And I've lost over 50lbs, nearly at goal.
cals in vs cals out works for achieving average results. theres nothing wrong with it.
But hormone levels rise and fall throughout the day, so overlooking the fact that there are beneficial times to consume certain things just shows that you have a remedial understanding of nutrition and how the body works.
Thinking you can map your hormone fluctuations throughout the day and match your eating to them, shows that you read an article/book/took a class/or some other form of getting very general information and now think you are an expert.0 -

To get the best out of an athlete you have to know how to fuel the body. If you participate in the same activity then you have a much better understanding of how to do that. Any good athlete or sports person is very active in gaining knowledge on how to better their nutrition. Under his advice back in 2005 I lost 51lbs and improved my base fitness and my recovery rate so much that I was able to do a martial arts grading that for me started at 7:45am and did not stop until 2:30 pm with a half hour lunch break.
Maybe I should have qualified it more. I was trying to improve my base fitness and lose weight to do a specific event. My main focus was not weight loss. So is he an expert? Maybe not. But he is very knowledgeable. You cannot do what he did for as long as he did without gaining some skills and a whole lot of knowledge along the way.
As for being snotty I am naturally sarcastic and do have to work at toning it down. But you're right, there is no need for it.0 -

You do know most MFP members are more knowledgable and more qualified than any doctor or health/fitness professional out there? Once you get that straight in your head, you will have a much nicer time here
Now, go fire that doctor of yours and stop wasting your time with someone who has spent years studying and start listening to the real experts, you know the ones who've read a few books and online forums?

Um, I don't see anything there about your doctor having any direct experience with nutrition or food science. I see he has experience training athletes to preform at an optimal level. Guess what? If everyone was meant to be a professional athlete - we'd all be professional athletes. You can't treat everyone the same and expect the best results for everyone. Period. Any decent doctor knows that and approaches patients with individualized care.0
