That I should really be working on a thigh gap now.
This I'll never understand. I had never even heard of a thigh gap until I joined MFP.
I thought I was the only one that never heard of this. I don't even strive to have one. My legs are too muscular for that to ever happen, and I choose the muscle over skin and bone.0 -
I don't often wear makeup but got a very weird feeling surprise the first time I applied foundation with my fingers and could feel the bones in my face. That was so strange!
Also, it's weird that now I can't get a good close shave under my arms (I know, TMI) because of the skin not being as tight now.... I either get razor burn from shaving too hard or a slight bit of left over stubble from not shaving closely enough. I cant bend my arm open/back anymore to make the skin tight.0 -
I discovered I have hip bones and collar bones and boy it hurts your hip if you accidentally walk into a table lol0

I thought I had an abdominal mass. I felt it on one side of my lower abdomen, but not the other. Uh-oh. Just happened to have an appointment with my GYN. I told her my concern. She examined me, told me to try and sit up from a lying position on the exam table. She finally completed her exam and said, "Susan, you have abdominal muscles!" Me? At 50 years old. Abdominal muscles for the first time in my life could be felt!
I thought you were going to say a hernia. Those suck.
i found a hernia! it's a little bit different i suppose..i'm just hoping that maybe they could do a tummy tuck when they operate :laugh:0 -
No one told me that my abs would not be symmetrical. Oh and then I realized that the upper 2 are so small that I almost only have a 4 pack.0

I am also cold all the time! It is nice to see a start to the definition of my abs too.0

I have noticed a lot of the same things: excessive bathroom trips, especially in the middle of the night, collar bone comes out to say hi, and my feet are shrinking. I also notice birth marks that I have never noticed before. It's kind of like introducing yourself to new features of your body.0

My neck is thinner & collarbone actually shows. But what I lke most (& I am only down 12 lbs. so far) is that my face looks so much thinner. I hope my shoes size goes down or at least that my shoes aren't so tight!0

Sitting in the bath tub is not as comfortable as before. My tail bone and hips do not have the cushion they use to have...oh well, I will take that side effect...I sit on a folded towel if I plan on soaking for a while.....
Im the opposite. Sitting in a bathtub is so much better. I fit!!!!!0 -
I have been cutting myself alot on my knees and ankles lately when shaving because I am not use to the skin being so close to the bone, I am use to having all the padding in the way. I dont think about it am in a hurry and find I cut myself alot OUCH0

Reading everyone else's replies makes me feel less like wiener for my odd discoveries and laughing at myself. Like, the lump I thought I had in my upper arm...muscle. HA. Ring size, absolutely. I keep hoping that hubs will catch a hint and get mine fixed or buy me a new snappy one. So far no luck. I guess it'll take me losing it. ;-) My closet is like a halfway house right now from all the shifting around. I'm cold all the time (it's going to be a rough winter...). I'm down 119 lbs and am discovering new old things, and never before noticed things. The things I am loving, besides just being less sizeable of course, is definitely the insane libido, and just feeling much more..light. I actually feel like I can be tossed around and not be worried that I'm going to cause a hernia for someone. LOL. I look much more like I did in high school, which is cool kind of, but I think I'm way cuter, because I smile WAY MORE and I'm confident and comfortable. Okay, and the libido makes me grin on a regular basis. ;-)0

1. Lose my rings more
2. Shoes too big for me
3. My hands and feet are always cold
4. When I get bloated.... I get really bloated now, were as before the fat hid it
This has never happened to me but girls I know, when you lose too much weight/ extreme exercises can make you miss/not have your period0 -
Nobody ever told me how much time I'd waste just looking at myself in the mirror... flexing! LMAO - it's kinda sad how fascinated I am by my own muscles!

I agree though that at a smaller size I find that any areas I'm not so happy with are way more noticable. I'm also getting wrinkles and my baby face has left me behind as well0 -

That I'd stop being bothered (so much) about 'losing weight' and be proud of my new muscles!
And that I'd want to do more exercise and feel weird if I didn't do something, even if its just a walk...

Me too on the rings! My wedding ring is now perilously loose, and I've only lost 20 lbs since my wedding two years ago. Money is tight so I haven't been able to resize it and I already lost it once in the snow this past winter and (miraculously) found it a week later when things thawed out. I'm thinking of wraping it in string or something so I can at least keep it on my finger!
Important safety tip girls - They make something called a ring guard. You can get it at jewelry stores and it is a little metal thing that fits on your ring to make it smaller. It's cheaper than having it sized (and way cheaper than replacing it if it is lost!) and saves you having to size it over and over as you lose weight. You just bend it up a little to make the ring fit tighter as you lose.0 -

Boob shrinkage....and I mean *extreme* boob shrinkage.
I went from almost a very full D to a B cup. Although, now that they're smaller.....I've grown to like them much better this way. :happy:
^ This, execpt I'm not "happy" about having to wear a sports bra almost all the time, but they definitely are perkier now! lol! Think this was the biggest difference my guy friends noticed :noway:
No more cushioning around my hip bones. If I bump into sometime it hurts!
That other "non fat" parts look bigger. I never thought I had a big nose until I lost weight, oh well!
Those odd looks you get from people who knew you when you were bigger, but aren't sure if you're the same person or not, so they just oddly stare.0 -
Yep - discovering all these bony prominences as just weird. What the heck is that?? LOL. Also, alas, I look older but feel younger. Fat tends to fill out wrinkles so when you lose the fat, the wrinkles show more. But I have so much more energy and stamina and zest for life it is worth it.
Losing weight doesn't solve all our problems - as someone else posted above. It won't make you prettier or more popular or more desirable (though it does improve certain things a lot...*delicate coff*). It won't make people like you. It won't necessarily improve your self confidence nor will it make you a better person. It isn't easy and the battle has just BEGUN when you get to goal as it is never ending. You don't go "on a diet" and then stop. It isn't magic and it is damn hard.
However - it is so worthwhile. It does teach you about yourself - as to how strong you are...not only to have the willpower and discipline to keep at it even though it is never easy - and then the things you learn about yourself while doing the exercise (I sort of accidentally became a runner and that amazes me about my non-athletic self).
So, enjoy the strange bones, the lack of padding, the need to wear extra clothes to stay warm.....and go out there and run circles around everyone else. That's what I love about it.0 -
My Husband told me over the weekend my butt was getting bigger :explode: I was so mad. Then he explained himself, and what he meant was it has lifted!! I guess the squats have pulled it up some so it's sticking out a little more.:laugh:0

Losing weight can expose flaws. For some people, and I include myself, losing weight makes you look older. Fat fills in wrinkles. I've had to come to accept that I look older but am in much better shape. Personally, I'm going for the old tough-as-nails wiry guy look because my baby face went with the fat I lost.
The wrinkles thing is 100% true. However, I think there's a balancing effect.
Heavy people also tend to look older than they are because we unconsciously associate fitness with youth. For example, I know once I've lost more weight, it's going to start showing in my skin, but by that time, I will also no longer look like a frumpy dump approaching middle age.
Ultimately, I think it's a wash.0 -

I've lost 78 lbs and I'm so worried that I'm going to have extra skin and won't be happy with my end result. Anyone else who has lost a bunch of weight the old fashioned way have any experience with this? I still have 43 lbs to go to be at my ideal weight.. I'm just hoping my bikini body is not just a dream...0

haha I have this problem too, except in school. I lost so much weight over the summer, and now when I sit all day in school my butt hurts so bad! I need a cushion :P0 -
Okay, I'm going to be seriously peeved if my feet shrink and I have to replace all my shoes. I gained a half size in shoes with each of my two pregnancies. I've always just thought it was due to the spreading out of the bones or loosening of the tendons while carrying the baby, and I didn't even associate it with the fact that I put on a lot of weight that I didn't lose after pregnancy. I had a lot of cute shoes that I had to replace.
Anyway, one weird thing I noticed. When I was full on fat, my waistband of whatever pants or shorts I was wearing would kind of sink into the fat. I definitely didn't have to worry about them slipping down. Now that I've lost some fat, toned the muscle underneath, but still have jiggly fat/loose skin floating on top of the muscle, I have to be careful. Especially when I'm working out, my shorts waist bands tend to move around on that waterbed of a fat pad and work their way down, regardless of how much I tighten the drawstring. :blushing:
Trust me, I'm peeved for you. I have a ridiculous collection of heels that now have to be replaced. After losing 50lbs, my shoes are all too big! And i'm with you on the "waterbed!" I have several pairs of gym shorts i can't wear out anymore because of that...
I will say, I didn't realize I had collar bones! And for me, I still look at myself and see that chubby girl I've been, so to fit into 12s and 14s after wearing 18s and 20s, it's hard to reconcile it all in my head. My sister lost 85 pounds before a kidney transplant 2 years ago-she says she still looks at herself as the chubby girl, not the chick that went from 230 to 150!0 -
Your youthful, chubby face is replaced by a slender one with crows feet! :O0

I've posted this one previously but I love it so I'm posting it again. Don't often use the bath tub in this apartment, prefer the shower and probably only used it 6 or 7 times in the 2 years I've been here. I did a long bike ride, 42 miles, a couple of weeks ago and decided to have a bath to soak my tired legs. Filled the tub to the normal mark, climbed in and it wasn't deep enough!!! :noway: 100lbs less means a lot less displacement than 6 months ago so I had to top up the water to get a good soak. :laugh:0
