Running and coyotes

Don't say "meep meep"...that attracts them.

I carry pepper spray, but as bear have been getting closer to the more populated areas I have thought about a fire arm.
You can also get bear mace. I got some recently for a hiking trip in the mountains.0 -

LOL! Love it.0 -
Wow! Glad you're safe and sound!
I didn't know that coyotes were likely to attack. I'd always heard of them being 'more afraid of us than we are of them', y'know?0 -
I run with flashing lights on (little clip on red and white bike taillights).
It's kept them away for me.
At the risk of sounding naive, does this really work or are you pulling my leg? (I'm really that naive.)
ETA: I'd rather look like a lost raver than shoot animals, just my preference. Don't judge!!:flowerforyou:0 -
I want to make it clear I don't think coyotes are out to get me, but they are here and I was stalked by two and I want to be safe (with dog mase or running during the day) they belong here more than I do
Making noise (a bear bell or the like) will usually keep them away as they (normally) try to avoid contact with humans but I'd also carry pepper spray just in case. I was looking through an outdoors catalog last night and noticed an item called bear bangers (no, not sausages) that make a noise like a gunshot but I'm not sure how practical they are to carry & deploy while running.0 -
I would think if the coyotes are already hanging out a suburban area then they're not too "afraid" of people at this point --- hence why other runners have been attacked in your area.
Honestly, I would run at some other time then sunrise/sunset, since that's when a lot of animals come out. But if you can't I would try to find a running partner or carry some sort of light-weight weapon with you.0 -

OMG... That's so funny..
Maybe call ACME and order coyote trap.0 -

This was a really interesting pdf (took like a minute to read)
- try picking up some pepper spray
- keep rocks in your pockets
- if they get close enough, maintain eye contact
- running sets off a coyote's chase instinct
Myself, I would change the time that I run or start taking a running partner with me. Be safe!0 -
Just run with someone that is slower than you. Then you don't have to outrun the coyotes.

I posted a couple days ago about running in the dark and some of our dangers here. Well this morning one of those dangers became all to real I was running about a mile and half from my house near my best friends house (in a very suburban neighbor hood) and there is an open field on one side of the field well in the under brush I saw two small dark dog like figures running one about six feet ahead of me and one parallel to me. I started making every big deep noise I could think of and coughing and turned and headed home (thank god a car drove between us or I doubt they would have been very detoured) cototes in our area are known for attacking runners. What do y'all do to stave off coyotes?
Haha, I knew you had to be from my neck of the woods if you're worried about coyotes and running! Broomfield here. I worry about the coyotes, in fact, they are a good part of the reason I don't do my sunrise runs very often.0 -
In our area coyotes are around but attempt to keep their distance from people. They must be getting fed somewhere else.0
-
I'll be more careful when I see them on my runs now. They have always been timid around me and just run away before I got anywhere near them. It sounds like the ones in your area have lost their fear of humans.0
-
I live right by a field and know they are there..that's why I do my walking during the daylight hours.0
-
pepper spray & air horn seems logical.0
-
I don't really know but with small predators I think the thing to do would be to stop running, as doing so would trigger their chase instinct. I imagine they're very unlikely to attack unless cornered or desperate.
The only really scary things I've encountered were the huge mastiff guard dogs you get in parts of South Africa - way to work up a fear sweat!0 -
I've had that happen as well in a very populated area here in CO. They didn't chase me or run with me, luckily since I had my dog with me. But we kept going and you could hear them howling and that behind me. I think I made awesome time getting out to the road since I was doing this on a path.... Anyways, I think pepperspray is a good idea or maybe even a walking stick so you have something to swing.0

I fear the same thing...and javalinas too! (Nasty pig-like things with tusks!) I walk at 4:30am and am constantly jingling my waterbottle carabiner to ward them off. I plan to get something more clattery to make noise when I walk! I really don't think they'll attack, but it's more proactive to scare them off first.
I grew up with Javelina's, they are a nasty creature but for the most part leave you alone unless you accidentally stumble across one that didn't see you coming.0 -
if they attack they arent that big just pound the crap out of them
yea and then stand in the middle of the street!!! gimme a break this is the worst advise Ive ever heard hope it was a joke!! I would pick another spot to run or run closer to civilization. Forget the size.... there bites can bring diseases and I would not chance that... FYI: I am 6"6 390lbs and pretty f'n strong. Dont mess with wild animals!
Yeah...what this reposter said. even small ( er ) sized "dogs" -especially wild dogs are very strong. Ever been in a fight even with a "domesticated" dog?? They are strong as hell and once that "fight or die" kicks in , in their brains, they will literally fight til the death. I used to live in an area that had lots of dogs just running lose and I was always " prepared" just in case I was attacked. Best option is to just pick another spot to run but if you cant, then be " prepared ".0 -
I feel your pain. We have coyotes come right up to our back yard. I've have a Great Pyreness that I take with me. He keeps me feeling pretty safe.0

LMAO!!0 -
I only have to worry about coyotes when I'm running at my parents' place in Colorado but typically there's only one at a time as I run in daylight hours out there (too many other creatures that could eat me at night) and I also always have one of the dogs with me to distract them.0

run them off a tall cliff, then drop an anvil on their head. Dub, Dub.......beeeep, beeeeeep......zip
BANG.............!!!!0 -
I am in CANADA, and i love to run in the dark,,, i see foxes and wolves and raccoons,,,and so many bunnies.....
Fear the bunnies....0 -
Don't run in the dark or alone. As far as the jingling and lights that makes you more visible for a person to attack. Just be safe and run during daylight0
-
Did you fall for the sign that said "free bird seed"?0
-
We don't have a problem with coyotes here, but at this time of the year, the bears are close by. I alter my route and time I run to try and minimize the chance of interaction. I agee that a whistle or small air horn could deter them. Good luck0
-
If you know that they have a history of attacking runners I'd say run somewhere else. I don't run by my house at night for that very reason. Or get a dog to run with.0
